    3. Hi, one suggestion with what you have, you need to go to the Col. Harold Simpson Confederate Research Center and Audie Murphy Gun museum. Contact Peggy Fox and let her help you. Hillsboro claims to be the home of Hood's Texas Brigade, C.S.A. Cousin Earlene Hatchett of Lubbock did so last week and found Georgia Military Records of Hatchetts in the Confederacy. Great Grandmother was a Hatchett. Her dad, Rev. and M.D. W.P. Hatchett was a conscientious objector to the Civil war at first, but soon began recruiting and giving a week or so of training at Valley Mills, Texas, He was a vet of the 1845 Mexican War. Earlene stopped Saturday in Stephenville at our reunion, then return to Lubbock. If your friends get bored with the museum, the Hillsboro Outlet Mall stores are 2 blocks away on I-35 north of Hwy 22. Happy hunting, Charles Wyly.

    1. [ERATH] Confederate Cavalry in Texas
    2. Good morning, I'm trying to find more info on the HEAD family in Texas. James L/R/P/A HEAD was attached to the Confederate Cavalry in Texas in 1864-1865. The papers I have are for: James L HEAD Com Sgt, Co. B, Mann's Reg't Tex Cav (the above from the top of the form) Mann's (formerly Bradford's) Regiment Texas Cavalry was formed by the consolidation of Bradford's, Mann's and Hoxey's Batalions and Captain R. S. Pooles' Company Texas Cavalry, per S. O. No. 207, Hdqrd. Dist of Texas., N. Mex,. and Ariz., dated Juy 25, 1864. It was composed principally of former members of the Texas State Troopers. (the above from the bottom of the form) I am still try to "pin down" exactly which James HEAD is my relative. He is listed with so many different middle initials that I keep finding conflicting info. My James HEAD was married to Lucinda Rebecca KEITH whose father was Gabriel (George) KEITH. Lucinda and James were married 23 Dec 1858, Hunt co, Texas Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Annette in AZ

    3. To Charles Wyly Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your history in the form of stories. You are very knowledge and write with a great sense of humor. Are you only subscribing to Erath county. I believe that is the only place I see your responses. How about subscribing to McLennan and Comanche counties. Do you know much about these counties. Somewhere I believe you mentioned you now live in Bellmead. My roots are in Chalk Bluff. I am specifically looking for the George W Carter family who lived around Axtell 1875 - 1900. And then information on his son, my grandpa, James Brown Carter b. 1883. George W moved on to Hamilton and Comanche counties around 1900-1910 when the oil boom started. James stayed around Chalk Bluff and raised 7 children including my dad, Les Carter, who still lives at Chalk Bluff. I look forward to more of your history telling. I really hope people are taking notes from you. Sandra Carter Van Wyk Denton County TX ----- Original Message ----- From: Charles A. 3. Yes , it existed. I remember the Millerville road and grandad and dad talked about th area. I think they had a community house like Cedar Point shared by the school- 1 teacher- and used by various churches in a rotating. basis. One church near Waco- Leroy area has both Baptist and Methodist groups and the pastor was a Baptist Lay Minister. Some cemeteries in Texas were like the East coast- each church owned a cemetery and most in each cemetery would be related to that church. The Box- Pony Creek was mostly people who attended the Box Methodist or Lodge, and the Pony Creek Baptist, about 100 yards apart. Most in the Johnsville are members or kin of the Church of Christ- not the One Cup or the modern groups. One man's leg is buried at Box, but he changed churches and the rest of him- a Robinson or Roberson , is buried at Johnsville. His granddaughter was my Great aunt by marriage. Aunt Etta said he would wake up screaming and hit where his missing foot should be with a fly swatter. , as he was in pain, likr sometimes my bridge has a toothache. He sent his sons to check his leg . They said the lid was bending his toes back sharply- they turned it and straightened the toes and the man had no more pain. Others tell a similar story about ants on the buried limb causing the living pain. Take care, Charles Wyly

    2. To all, There is a Millerville Cemetery which is just north of Hico and is in the edge of Erath County......this was where the Millerville community was at one time. It has nothing to with Miller Hill, Millersview, Miller Grove, or other similar names. Whether is is on a road map, almanac, world globe, or whathave you makes no difference. There was once a Millerville in Erath County and all that is left is those in the cemetery with all due respect to those still living nearby. It is located s.w. of Duffau or s.e. of Clairette...north of Hico. Marilyn Giesecke Mills Ewers published a community history in 1992 which will be in area libraries. The cemetery is one of those included in the three set "Erath County Cemeteries" of Hudson & Cawyer which are widely circulated and will contain listings of those buried before ca. 1970. HOWERTON, GIESECKE, NIX, LIVELY are some of the names of those buried there.

    3. Hi, Larry, I am back from a Family Reunion at the Holiday Inn at \stephenville Holiday Inn of Wyly Kin. I was chairman and very busy when I saw your request. We found out too late that the Wyly- Hufff related families of West Texas had one the same day. \They are cousins. Saw Marilyn Giesekie Mills Ewers at Stephenville Cross Timbers Country Opry and her husband Fred Ewers. Our reunion group always visits the Country Opry for the last 10 plus years. The M.C. is Durwood Rowell of KRLD radio in Dallas, an Okie, I think, and the host announcer of the network Baptist Hour. We enjoy having fun together- we can do our own thing when we get home. Now , for Millerville. I think some may confuse Millerville with Miller Hill in Erath County. Miller Hill is on the road from Johnsville to Pony Creek. There is a sharp right turn past the Pony Creek church a mile or so. If you went straight you would run through the Elvis Riggs home place and old Hurley land. Then there is a long hill down towards Mitchell Creek church and the old Pony Creek school site. Some of us as early teenagers used to ride our bikes to the foot of Miller Hill on Davis or Tarpley land and play Irish Swing games (Square dances or Ring Games to the singing of everyone, then set down about 9 or 9:30 P.M. and listen to country Classical instrumental music- Over the Waves Waltz, , Soldier's Joy, & others) while we rested and ate cookies or homemade ice cream, to regain our strength to pedal back up Miller's Hill, then home was only 3 more miles. Cemeteries nearby would be Box- Pony Creek, Beach Family Cemetery, possibly Mitchell Creek Baptist Church cemetery, and Cedar Point cemetery. One of the teachers at Johnsville and Selden Schools was Esther Miller. Will check H. Grady Perry's Grand Old Erath book later. Take care, Charles Wyly.

    3. I was mistaken-- there IS a Millerville Cemetery in Erath County. It is located a few miles south of Duffau in the southeast corner of Erath County. My thanks to Bill McCarty for helping out. The text of his msg to me is below. Hindsight is always 20/20. I should have studied the map of Erath County instead of merely consulting the index. I've run across tiny cemeteries before that aren't indexed- I must be getting forgetful in my old age. :-) Best regards, Brit Ferguson > Brit, > The community of Millerville is gone.....all that remains is >the cemetery. > If you look at The Roads of Texas, there is a "cemetery" which is >back > west and south of Duffau.
