    2. Charles A. Wyly
    3. Hi, Not sure of any connections, but John Standifer is a retired Chevrolet dealer in Hillsboro, Hill County. He ran a tire store between the outlet mall and the back entrance to Hill College, where he was on the board. One daughter, judy was a cheerleader and athlete there. Her sister married Bob Swilling of Whitney. he and I did a contract in the Carolinas, Minnesota, La. , Miss. , and Oklahoma for Discover card. i lost track of the Standifer boys after they went to A&M. Another Standifer, Tom , was a school Superintendent in Hill or McClennan County. There are several others in Hillsboro and Waco area by 3 spellings. Check Big Yellow phone book on the internet & see if first names might married your family as repetitions by naming patterns. Concerning the Wells family, one lived on Hwy 281 between Stephenville and the Selden turnoff. , across from the Ogan home and the Vanderhorst Dairy. There is a large broiler house there, now unused. The Gentry Bridge road runs by the north side of the Wells farm. Keep fishing, Geneaology is like the tired old hungry dog who came limping home , saying "Some days chicken, some days feathers". , or as one said on this network this week, "even a blind hog finds an acorn sometimes" Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. Charles and other interested, I enjoy your info like many others but this is the first time I have found one of our families. You mentioned a STANDIFER today. My husband's mother was born in Dublin. Her father was NELSON PEVEHOUSE GREEN, son of Benjamin GREEN and Sarah PEVEHOUSE. They lived near Alexander and are buried in Heavenly Branch Cemetery. Nelson married TENNESSEE PRUDENCE WELLS. She was the daughter of John WELLS and IDA ESTELLE ROGERS, early settlers from Falls Co. After John died Estelle married SAMUEL R Standifer, 9 Dec 1897. He was a minister and performed some of the marriages in Erath Co around this time. In 1910 they were in Howe, Grayson Co, TX. Estelle died in 1918 and is buried in Falls Co with her parents and her first husband, John Wells. We don't know what happened to Samuel but he was alive at that time, as he signed the death certificate. If Samuel is a member of your family I would like information on him. As a side note, Ben Green and Sarah are the parents of Amanda Green who married Hugh Garland PITTMAN. Their daughter was BLANCHE PITTMAN, superintendent of schools for Erath County. Thanks for all the info you give this list. Sally Smith Lake Havasu City, AZ

    3. Hi, I attended school at Johnsville with a Mary Rainey who had siblings in school I think they went west to Knox City or the plains when Josh Cox became a cotton harvest contractor and trucker, before machine strippers. That was in first 3 or 4 grades. We had a habit of keeping touch with former students. Think the teacher encouraged it for English. I used to write Mary each time it rained, then we had a long dry spell in the 1930's. Your grandma Marilyn Mills Ewers should have some Rainey info in her Three Way book or in the box of notes she left in Stephenville library. Wasn't Wayne Rainey, the 1930's harmonica player on XEG or XERF Radio from Central Texas? He sold harmonicas and "French Harps" and self teaching books in 2 nations. The first Erath County radio was KFPL Dublin (Kind Friends Please Listen) with Stephenville Studios in Arch Evans's tire store behind the Methodist church. Saturday night was live music from local schools. The Johnsville students went up and sang once. One song was "When You and I were young, Maggie"- a song used in the County Literary meets. Used to attend the movies in Stephenville some with a Whitley boy from Evergreen (East of Rabbit Center or Welcome Valley). His uncle Ray played gituar and sang on some old black and white Tom Mix or Gene Autry movies. Gene had a ranch and rodeo at Dublin when I was in Tarleton . The Colburns ran it near Dublin. in the 1940's, but pardon me, I am wandering. Thought you might add something to the above. Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. Hi, Sandra Seems your name is familiar for some reason. I taught at West then Midway as vocational money shifted and retired in Waco. I have 2 degrees from NTST or U of NT in Denton, heavy in history and have lived over 1/3 of the time Texas has been a state. I think we fail to realize our great grandparents here still had outlaw and Renegade Indian problems. Everyone wh carried a bow and arrow or wore feathers wasn't necessarioy indians. Like back in Georgia this was a way to place blame on innocents, sometimes, hoping it would agitate removal of all Indians, peaceful or not. Now, if someone had an Indian mother or grandmother like Jesse James, he didn't brag about it back then, or he might have also been removed. I live in Hewitt, near Hewitt Drive and Midway High. Dad's first cousin Mineola Wyly Fulbright lives in Bellmead and her sister Ann Wyly Standifer lives in Waco. I just sold 90 acres- the remainder of Grandad's farm in Selden. he had 400 plus acres of former Hatchett land. The fire ants, killer bees, snakes, and heat and dairy smell is not the home country I grew up in. We used to live with nature- now they battle, and 70 is a little late to start that type of life By the way, seen any stray ostriches or Emus or Feral hogs lately? I have noticed reports from Gholson & China Spring. The Brazos is a playground for them, not a barrier. . I really think if we get as hungry as some did in the 30's we will start eating the Emus, not dumping them on our neighbors. Raleigh Carter, with a beard almost to his belt, lived near Grandad at Selden. His children were Clyde and Glatys. Some more Carters lived in the Pony Creek and Chalk Mountain and cedar point area. Maybeline was my age. These carters were farmers and did custom hay bailing and mowing. Will check some more. Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. While everyone's asking questions, thought I would throw mine in: Does anyone know anything about the Raineys who lived in Harbin, TX and had a general store, telephone office and hotel in the 1880's? I found this information in an article written by the Empire Tribune in 1984 about the Harbin Community. My great-great grandmother was Mary Frances Raney, daughter of Stephen & Molley E. Rainey(per 1860 census for Schuyler Co. MO) She married Erastus L. Bradley and they resided in the Harbin/Dublin area. Wondering if the Rainey's who owned the property listed above are related. Thanks for any info--Kim

    3. To Charles Wyly Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your history in the form of stories. You are very knowledge and write with a great sense of humor. Are you only subscribing to Erath county. I believe that is the only place I see your responses. How about subscribing to McLennan and Comanche counties. Do you know much about these counties. Somewhere I believe you mentioned you now live in Bellmead. My roots are in Chalk Bluff. I am specifically looking for the George W Carter family who lived around Axtell 1875 - 1900. And then information on his son, my grandpa, James Brown Carter b. 1883. George W moved on to Hamilton and Comanche counties around 1900-1910 when the oil boom started. James stayed around Chalk Bluff and raised 7 children. I look forward to more of your history telling. I really hope people are taking notes from you. Sandra

    3. Hello , those of you with Erath County grassburrs in your heels, Do either of you know Shucks McCarty, Jay McCarty, Ina McCarty of Walnut Springs and their brother Ab McCarty of the Pettit area? Ab married my wife's brother- in Law's sister, a Burnett from Slapout (Howard, Brown County, Texas. I taught 2 of the 3 sons of Jay- J. Eddie and Little Mack. All 3 got college football scholarships from their outstanding 6 man football playing. I understand that 1/2 of theUniversity of Kansas football scholarships went to 6 man players at one time. JK. Eddie coached at Cleburne and did run a custodial supply house. "Little Mack" coached in Lubbock Schools. Also, I noticed the families of McCarty and Fretwell were linked in the Wyly McCarty tree. According to my records, this Fretwell may have sold the Johnsville Gin to the Riggs and/or Hollis families. Was this the family of Scott Fretwell and his son Cecil? Mrs. Fretwell used to buy groceries in Walnut Springs. While Scott was on a business trip to the Huntsville area, Cecil used to meet usat Buck Little's home to trade motorcycle parts with Herbert, me, and Harold Davis. John Ben Rumph used to ride the bacxkroads with us to swimming and scenic points. As you may know, Cecil broke his foot riding a motorcycle at night and, when his lights failed, he hit a cedar post and broke his foot. He joined the Army during the Korean War and was found dead in front of an American Dugout. All American officers were dead. Cecil had the only bloody bayonet and there were 17 dead North Koreans around him with bayonett stabs. Scott was present in Glen Rose when the Veterans monument was dedicated on the Courthouse square. Cecil was also given the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumsly. It so affected his dad that he was converted at the Cottonwood Baptist Church below Chalk Mountain and never missed a service if he was able to get there. I was told this story by several and saw one Glen Rose newspaper reporting the ceremony. Scott , when younger, back when Clyde, Bonnie, and Raymond Hamilton used to sleep in or near the Johnsville Church of Christ, Scott and family would attend the summer outdoor meetings at the church tabernacle. So did we in the 1930's. He was a good neighbor. Ring any bells??? Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. Hi, Has anyone examined his headstone for symbols? Also check the State Secretary of Masons. A local lodge should help you. If not, check the Lee Lockwood Masonic library and museum on West Waco Drive in Waco. I might find another source if this fails. I found a headstone in Indian Creek- an inverted triangle with skull and Crossbones and KCS- one letter in each corner. The stone has apparently been replaced now. I was told by a secretary on the phone at the Lockwood library to check with the Knights of Pythias. Sure enough, the KCS was an old Knights of Christian Service used by European Crusaders who tried to regain control of Jerusaleum from the Moslem Powere. This symbol was used by some Knights of Pythias members in the early 1800's That was the only time I have ever seen it on a headstone. When I taught Industrial Cooperative Training, one of our texts for stonecutters and engravers of headstones had all sorts of exact meanings of roses and markings we today just consider personal taste in art, but in history each decoration had an exact meaning, just as the Texas Czech traditional ethnic dress of the ladies or vest of the man.tells one the family history , occupations, and marriage status by the decorations and symbols. Take care, Charles A. Wyly

    3. Hi, I have "old Photos' supposedly of family members who had young children by them in the 1830's I don't think so, since the civil War was the era that made photography with gunpowder flash more common. There were French Daugerotypes before 1850 which took a minute or longer to expose- ifr one stayed still that long. Also some Tintypes. I have some Tintypes, one of an ancestor which was taken before 1860. I have seen the same posed photo of the same ancestor. Apparently photographers could convert tintypes to photos and newspaper print pictures, making a "photo" possible of someone who died before the camera and film were invented. Any Photography historians want to clear us up on this one? There were no photos of George Washington- only paintings and sketches. I have seen a painting of "Discovery" since I was a child in the Johnsville school. I thought the white haired man holding the flag was George Washington until I saw the photo of the "Discovery" Painting in the Sevier Family History Book. The large painting, often copied, is hanging in the Tennessee Capitol. It is of Gen. and first governor of Tennessee & U.S. Congressman John Sevier. He died before cameras came along. He was my great grandfather 8 generations ago . John Sevier's dad Valentine (Vol-In-Tin) had lived as neighbors to George Washington, if I remember the locations right. Old Vol was said to have lived 1699 to 1803- 3 centuries, according to his Grandson's records. Anyone know of others who lived in 3 centuries? Your chldren might, if they can find a place to stand by then. Take care, Charles A. Wyly

On the marker it show his name and birth and death dates and lists five novels that he wrote and the notation that he had also written about 120 short stories. I would love to read these books but have been unable to find any acept one in a book store in New York City. 2. Julia, there is a sight that collects old family documents, pictures, family bibles, etc., and posts them on the internet. The men that run this sight buy them in their travels. Their websight states that this is not a business as they don't do it for a profit but to help others find their family histories. Things are added periodically. Below is the websight. http://users.erinet.com/31363/fordand.htm Might want to check back periodically. I am not associated with this sight - just enjoy looking at from time to time. I think that I have seen a websight somewhere that people rescue old items with genealogical value and list them but I don't find the sight at present. Maybe someone else knows the web address for similar sights. Sheryl McNeely Shaw Crosby, TX <Wouldn't it be neat if there was an "old photo" clearing house web site?
