    3. Mr. Wyly(or anyone): Can you give a brief account of the story of McDowell's Hole? I used to hear it growing up in Erath County, about it being haunted. Didn't someone die or get killed there? Do you remember the names of those involved? Kim Ewers ----- Original Message ----- From: Charles A. 3. Hi, Yes, I taught my first year at Hamlin and taught a Billy Hallmark. All the folj were good folk , and it seemed that Texas A&M dominated the graduates there, possibly because of the Round Top Oil Field and the old Flat Top gravel topwn causing the area to be more profitable than some rolling Plains towns. I left to become a teaching Principal in Bosque County, nearer my family . You mentioned John Wallace. He lived across Hwy 67 from State Rep. H. Grady Perry's store- the New Johnsville or Threeway Store. The present 3 way school buildings are across the old Johnsville road from John Wallace home. Mom and dad saw their first TV at their house. I was in the army or Fort Worth. I thought John was buried in New Box- Pony Creek cemetery. Fooled me if he isn't . John Ben Rumph could tell you. He still lives on his mom's Beach land in a newer house. If you have a Wallace family tree, tell me if John is of the same Wallace family of Clarkesville, Ga. whom Gen. James Rutherford Wyly married after Sarah Hawkins Clark Wyly filed for divorce and custody of the 13 kids (Most were married & She lived with the older boys and managed Clark land) There are extensive court records in Clarkesville about Frances and sister and/or daughter being held for murder but they were not convicted. J.R. and Francis raised her daughter and Absolam Cleveland's son John. ,a young boy. J.R. and Sarah are buried side by side in the old Clarkesville Cemetery near the Episcopal church he built for Charleston tourists. about 1820 or 30. Do you havve any records of a murder in the Traveller.s Rest Inn? ''''''''Aunt Agness Hatchett Wyly had a tale about it but no names. The State of Georgia park guides say the dark spot in the floor is a varnish spill, not blood. It was tested in police labs in Atlanta. The book has some reports of this murder, more folklore than fact, apparently. We do know Jesse Walton was shot in the arm thyrough an Inn window by an Indian or Tory Anglo dressed like an Indian trying to stir up enough trouble to run the Indians out. M ack Mullins of Waco Library told me that about his Walton ancestor. Take care, Charles Wyly

    2. Glenita Guthrie
    3. I have just located Edward Marion Randolph's death certificate stating he died and was buried on Oct.25, 1919 in the Barbee Cemetery. He was a resident of Dublin, TX. The informant on the certificate is his daughter Florence Daley who lived in Dublin too. Edward's nephew William Randolph died in Dublin in 1975. He is buried in Old Dublin Memorial Park. His pallbears were Grady Scott, Hayward Moore, Coy Wall, Elmo Morris, B.C. Martin, Morgan Barnett. Do any of these names ring a bell? I received some good help the last email I sent so I am trying again. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

    3. In reply to the question if I am related to Chuck Johnstone of Austin and Galveston: I don't know. I'm specifically looking for Andrew Beaumont Johnstone, born in 1834 in Charleston, South Carolina to Daniel Pinckney Johnstone Sr. and Sarah Maxwell Pringle Johnstone. He supposedly moved to the area around Stephanville, Texas as an adult. Nothing else is known.

    3. In 1946 Jimmy Green Sr. & Jr. lived between Evergreen and Rabbit Center (Welcome Valley_ east on US 67 from Stephenville. Some Greens are in either East End or West End Cemeteries. I don't have the lists- Some may be in the new Stephenville Garden of Memories about 20 to 30 years old with masoleum on Dublin Highway. Mom's brother Fred and wife Vaughnzeal Suitt Carey are there. I mentioned to the owner at one funeral I was glad to see his graves turned the traditional christian way, so if they stood up they would be facing east , not on a circular drive as several in McLennan County are. I was checking on a free lot for Veterans (The required vault was hardly free). I asked him why he did not turn all Christian Graves facing East. He was shocked m, said he was a Christian and had never heard of such an idea. Rosemound Jewish cemetery in Waco have graves turned all directions. I had several Veselka Friends around schools. They tell me the Christian Veselka cemetery near Axtell has all old graves north and south as they were at odds with the powers that be in Czechoslovakia and continued to show their pride and unity this way in the new country. Our Army training cadre during Korea were in WW2 combat. They were told in Europe that if they found a cemetery with a cross on it, the cross and grave would be east- west as a personal testimony that they died in hope of the resurection of the body. If they were lost behind lines and lost their compass they sure didn't run up to the nearest Nazi Traffic cop and ask directions to the next town they planned to blow up something in. Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. Hi, are you related to Dave, James, Milton, and Imogene hatchett Garner of Selden, (Garrett Springs, Erath county, Texas)? Wayne was a year ahead of me in school. Milton was older. Dr. Nell Garner returned from medical missionary work and now teaches in Dallas Baylor School of Medicine. Her brother Jim still works at LTV Arlington and has about 15 in his North Richland Hills Corn Popper business. Imogene's mom and my mom were Carey sisters and dad and her dad were Hatchett cousins. Your name sure sounds familiar. Take care, Charles Wyly

    2. Charlie, When did you teach in Hamlin? Do you remember any HALLMARKs or WALLACEs? Did you know or know of any of those in Stephenville, way, way, back? One set of my children's g-grandparents, John Thomas and Maggie (SCOTT) WALLACE were buried, I think, in the Indian Spring(s) cemetery. The families of both my late & present husbands attended school in Hamlin back in the 30s & early 40s, and my daughters did from '51 to '67. Thanks Charlie, for your essays about people & history of Erath Co., even if I've never been there, I enjoy reading about the area; my children have aunts & uncles who were born there. 3. Mr. Wyly, my name is Debbie, my great grandfather was in Erath Co. in 1890's, in 1892 he married a woman name of Alice Alexander or Midkiff, she was from Grimes or Erath County, they married in Shackelford County. His name was Wm.(Puttie) Gibbs. They separated somewheres around 1900 or shortly there after. Rumor has it that they split several times, he would always find them. There were 3 children. 2 boys and l girl. We found her (Alice) in 1910 remarried. But we cannot find anything before 1890 or anything after 1900 about Mr. Gibbs. he was supposed to be a brick mason, thus the nickname Puttie. Family says he went back to Ireland, but he was borne at sea. So, the elders of the family, or what is left, will not discuss this. If you have or can find any information on him please contact me. thanks. Children names were Charles, Devoliam, Henry. The last time the parents separated, they took the last name of Alexander. That is the sir name that we all took. We didn't even find the name of Gibbs till the seventies when my grandfather was dying. thanks for listening anyway. deb ---------- > From: Charles A. 3. Hi, pardon my one track mind, but was Wallace McNeill the son of Dr. McNeil or a grandson? My mom's lifelong friend and cousin by marriege was Daisy McNiel Stone who used to be cashier for the McNeill Barber shop, book store and bath house for workers who did not have bath facilities. Don.t see how they made much on 25 cents a week per customer. (Just bit my tongue). Daisy and mom shared a rest home room for a year or so. and I attended high school with her son Teel. I am also a Stone descendant. Take care, Charles Wyly

    3. Hi, George Wyly married Effie Carr in Erath County about 100 years ago. George was my grandad's brother. They settled near his brother Jim, or maybe Jim was there last, near Friona- Black elevator area. later they ran an apple orchard in the Pecos valley at Roswell, M.N. and retired in the Falls Church, Va, area. She had planned to come back to a reunion when past 90 but did not come. The Luther Carr family lived near the Webbs on the road from Johnsville to Selden by the Duffau bridge and steep hill. David Carey, my second cousin lives on and owns some of this Hatchett- Carr land now and is a carr descendant. C.E.Carr ran a service station on South Graham Street and a cafe on the Fort Worth Hiway in Stephenville, Texas Hubert Waugh also ran it at one time. They were childhood friends from Selden.. 1950's. My Uncle Emmet Carey, semi retired, ran a garage behind the station and I worked there part time and lived next door in a Garage apartment of Mr. Boggus. ALSO: former Attorney General of Texas Waggoner Carr is from Hillsboron, Hill county, Texas. At Abbott about 100 years ago a Carr ran a stage depot and rock quarry near the Hooker or Mart Cole cave near West, Texas where some think pioneer Phillip Nolan lived. Buildings in West, Bynum, Abbott, Hillsboro and possibly Waco came from this Quarry. 2 or more generations of this family ran the cotton gin in Abbott, Texas. This Carr had a brother who was an El Paso judge who backed Judge Roy Bean of Pecos financially and otherwise. Waggoner Carr has taken the position of defending the rights of the family of J. Frank Dalton aka Jesse James, of Grandbury who is buried there with Jesse James on the headstone put there by his kin. He also later lived near Grosebeck, Texas and near Houston and some in Galveston, but is buried in Grandbury. One of the James family settled in Hillsboro. Just background- see any connection. Charles Wyly
