    3. Hi, Fred, Hope your grandad and Marilyn enjoyed the Country Opry this week. I remember many rumors & stories of the McDowell or McDow hole. It was on Green's Creek below Dublin. One Fitzzgerald writer who grew up on the Fitzgerald Nursery & Old Dublin road wrote about it in the Stephenville Empire- Tribune. So have others, . It seems a mother and baby disapeared from their home while the father was gone. They were not found for many years. Stories said you could go to the McDowell hole on a moonlit night and at a given time she would wail and a ghostly shadow would float from the high bank to the low one across the water hole, looking and crying for her child. When we were in High school on a still morning you could hear the Steam train whistle at Dublin at Grandad's Selden home - from Dublin, 25 miles away. We sometimes heard it at Johnsville. The whistle does not explain how two men before 1900 went to see and hear. They did. One died of fright - a heart attack with his eyes open and mouth open in fright. His partner ran several miles when he saw whatever. Several had examined the site and there were no trolley wires or cables to be found like we used to hang across creeks for diving or the thrill of the ride. In fairly recent years, someone was fishing in the Hole and noticed a bone protuding from erosion of the high bank. There had been a hand dug well above a spring to supply the cabin. /this was common, or clean and enclose a spring, as surface water was sometimes poluted by wild and /or domestic animals, even back then. He went for help. The recent erosion and cave in of the bank had opened the side of the well. There were a flat rock or two in the well. Under the rock was the skeleton of a woman and a baby. They were buried somewhere in Erath County and the sounds and aparitions have not been seen or heard since. I never went there at night. WE had our own excitement. I never saw this done but was told exactly how it was done. Someone older than I would make a dumbull which was illegal, or tie a tight wire or rawhide string to the corner of a house to make wierd noises at night. A Dumbull was a bucket or can with a hole in the lid or a rawhide cover was sometimes used to chivaree newlyweds. . some sticks or fiddle bows pulled across the tight wire or hole in the bucket made all sorts of noise. With practice one could imitate a Panther. Someone got peeved or carried a joke too far by scareing the Johnsville Postmaster, then making Panther tracks on the Duffau Creek. He had pepole talking about the noise they and he had heard, and saw the tracks and was making plans to move before someone told him it was a joke.He thought it was after him. Take care, Charles Wyly Oh, by the way a Black Panther was killed in Clifton in the last 20 years and Alligator are in the Bosque at Baylor Camp, towards Valley Mills. I know the argument that Black Panthers are not texas Natives. Neither were Irishmen- they are here anyway. Since I was in High School one started near the Hatchett Cemetery in early spring and stockmen and hunters and Rooster farmers reported his movement slowly downstream 2 to 5 miles a week and they lost him at Clifton each year. He screamed one night at a neighbor's house and the gentle milk cows laid the 8 foot log fence flat. They did not stop to question his ancestry. Everyone in the house woke up instantly scared. Game wardens have warned in the past they have seen very large cat paws around Lake Grapevine. Some of those folk in Southlake area have private 2 engine planes and are known to have had large cats in captivity and in their homes. Some think they turn them out to run at night, like a dog, and they come home before sunup. A Mother Pnther was sighted in Bear Creek- Keller- North Richland Hills, north of Fort Worth for the first 2 weeks of school. She and a cub were finally captured. Wonder why one of the older schools in Fort Worth was called the Panther City High School?? Take care and sleep tight and don't let the Bedbugs Bite, Charles Wyly

    3. Hi, was his grant from Spain, Mexico, Republic of Texas or State of Texas. ?? Mr Steven of Panther Cave, Chalk Mountain, had bought all land due north from Erath County to the Red River, but could not prove title . He called it Milam County land. There was a tendency for the Republic of Texas and the state to ignore Spanish Land grants unless the one claiming the land had fought against Santa Anna with the Texans. Also true in New Mexico. The Lincoln County Wars were fought between 2 Anglo ranching interests, both having no more respect for Spanish claims than they did for the Eastern Indians. Billy the Kid was a hero to these origional Spanish. A league is appx. 3 miles.A Labor' (Laboor) is 688 acres compared to a section of 640 acres. Much of the High Plains is surveyed in Leagues and Labors. A vara compared to a rod. It was the distance around the Spanish Governor or empresario's front buggy wheel. By tying a white rag to a spoke the driver could count the turns and measure the land. Anyone else have another explanation? Take care, Charles Wyly

All the folj were good folk , and it seemed that Texas A&M dominated the graduates there, possibly because of the Round Top Oil Field and the old Flat Top gravel topwn causing the area to be more profitable than some rolling Plains towns. I left to become a teaching Principal in Bosque County, nearer my family . You mentioned John Wallace. He lived across Hwy 67 from State Rep. H. Grady Perry's store- the New Johnsville or Threeway Store. The present 3 way school buildings are across the old Johnsville road from John Wallace home. Mom and dad saw their first TV at their house. I was in the army or Fort Worth. I thought John was buried in New Box- Pony Creek cemetery. Fooled me if he isn't . John Ben Rumph could tell you. He still lives on his mom's Beach land in a newer house. If you have a Wallace family tree, tell me if John is of the same Wallace family of Clarkesville, Ga. whom Gen. James Rutherford Wyly married after Sarah Hawkins Clark Wyly filed for divorce and custody of the 13 kids (Most were married & She lived with the older boys and managed Clark land) There are extensive court records in Clarkesville about Frances and sister and/or daughter being held for murder but they were not convicted. J.R. and Francis raised her daughter and Absolam Cleveland's son John. ,a young boy. J.R. and Sarah are buried side by side in the old Clarkesville Cemetery near the Episcopal church he built for Charleston tourists. about 1820 or 30. Do you havve any records of a murder in the Traveller.s Rest Inn? ''''''''Aunt Agness Hatchett Wyly had a tale about it but no names. The State of Georgia park guides say the dark spot in the floor is a varnish spill, not blood. It was tested in police labs in Atlanta. The book has some reports of this murder, more folklore than fact, apparently. We do know Jesse Walton was shot in the arm thyrough an Inn window by an Indian or Tory Anglo dressed like an Indian trying to stir up enough trouble to run the Indians out. M ack Mullins of Waco Library told me that about his Walton ancestor. 3. Dear Charles Wyly & Others, Your posts are so full of great information - such a wealth or oral tradition and real history... I see you to be a huge filing cabinet of legend, lore, and truth... Havind studied the movement, migration, clusters, homelife, occupations, music, art, genealogy, religion, family names, etc....from the time they came on the ships with Columbus in the late 1400's til now... they were sent out and deported, some first to the Caribbean... some being Mediterranean or Northa African gypsies, some Irish Travellers... just like the Jews in the Spanish Inquisition... and I have seen their influence in the South in many ways....I know that you have had at least one encounter with a flim flam man, gypsy, traveller or whatever... could you give me some of your insite? Anything you know or can impart would be of great interest to me. Many thanks Karla ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. 3. In the 3 vols of Erath Cemetery Listings I find the following: Green 24 listings, Hughes 13 listings, Mitchell 16 listings. If you can be more specific I can look for them, or if you want copies of all or any I can do them for 10¢ per page plus postage. Let me know what you would like and give me time to get the copies made speed depends on how many requests I get and when I can get to the library.
