    2. Charles A. Wyly
    3. Hi, sorry if I have repeated this before, but Paul Killion married Balma Gristy, both about 15-20 years older than me. We farmed the Ned and Ida Head Gristy place in Johnsville during WW2. He died rather young and Balma re married Homer Davis. You mentioned the Mills family. Was this the same family as Marion Mills of Johnsville who married Minnie Little of Johnsville? Most of their sons worked for dad in seasonal farm work at one time or another. One of Marion Sr.'s sons now runs the Mills Construction Company and is now doing a new lake near the Bosque - possibly on it, for either the City of Clifton or Meridian- both have similar projects since Waco pulled of the proposed Lake Bosque. A brother to the one who has the Construction Company is now a Texas Highway Patrolman in Hamilton, Texas. Their mom was Marilyn Giesekie Mills Ewers who gatherred the Three Way School District History for their PTA project. Their dad used do work for my dad and Marilyn assisted mom in cooking for thresher crews of 25 to 30 men. In case you think the small schools are dead, Three Way Common School District with a gym and several buildings for elementary school grades is doing fine. They have earned the rating of an Exempleary School under the Texas Education Agency rating system.Their High School students attend Hico Schools. When I rode Oscar Parham's contract school bus to Stephenville High, it was about 55 miles to the back of the route north and east of Chalk Mountain and doubling down gravel roads. (Not sure if that was one way or round trip, but he made it round trip twice a day for many years. ) Also, 200 years ago in Laurens District, South Carolina, mom's ancestors included the Copeland and Hipp families of Clinton , Greer, and Greenville. One was named POLLY MILLS COPELAND.(SCOTTISH) I wonder about that connection, but haven't had time to chase that rabbit. Cousins of theirs in Huricane Baptist And Duncan Creek Presbyterian cemeteries are DILLARD, HIPP( Moravian German), VAUGHN-VAUGHAN, NABORS-NEIGHBORS Jim Neighbors Ancestors and Newbury , S.C. is just down the road). (In both cases the last two pair of names had the same common ancestor and one spelling is on individual graves overshaddowed by a larger family marker with the other spelling). Also included are WHITE cousins. COPELANDS and their kin fought in The Revolutionary War and the Civil War and family members died in each war. They just woke and looked outside and the war was in their back yards, so to speak. A few hundred of the descendants of those in these two cemeteries still live there, in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas and other points- possibly a few thousand. living today. There are two stories from this point 1. Lorena sicked , died and the children were placed in the Gunther Orphans home. 2. Lorena could not care for the children so placed them in the Gunther Orphans home and work there to help pay for their keep. Regardles, It has left a number of Questions. 1. Does anyone remember a Oil field accident that would have occured between 1925 to the mid 1930's where men were killed. and would have been probably outside the county.?? 2. Where is the Gunther Orphans home, or could it be Gunter in Eastland Co??? Is it still in exhistance or where Might I find records. 3. IHi,all, I did not say Texas Rangers- I said Texas Partizan Rangers or, in this case "Central Texas Rangers". My great Grandad was supposed to have ridden on one legitimate Posse hunting a murderer after the Civil War. Baylor was most active just before the War. Neither group was a full time part of the Texas Rangers. The Partizan Rangers were supposed to be a Confederate National Guard type organization protecting the frontier from Indians while able bodied men had gone east to fight someone else's war. I do not know if the Texas Rangers kept records of the Partizan Rangers- they were Army. Very few in Texas had much interest in Slavery- it was too expensive for small homesteads. Instead, these Partizan Rangers mostly harrased theGermans of the New Braunfels area who had just lost one war in their life in Europe. Some were trying to get to Mexico when Capt. McDuff and men slaughterred them and imprisoned their wives and kids behind barbed wire, while the Comanche and Apache Indians were pushing the frontier back. Also, John R. Baylor, first Arizona Governor believed the only good Indian was a dead one. Col. Buck Barry, Texas Ranger , commissioned Mr. Baylor (Not the R.E.B. Baylor, founded the University) or lead an occasional posse to catch wanted criminals. Baylor organized volunteers from Waco to Abilene up the Bosque and west as an Indian Removal force, , Most murderrers they caught were not tried, but found hanging as "suicides" or shot as escapees. Baylor, according to Erath County records quoted on Historic calendars there from Town and Country Bank, researched by Dan Young, a History teacher. Baylor did not hesitate to shoot Caddo women and kids who reached for a broomstick or whatever when he rode up, orderring them off their farms. If your great grandmother was 1/2 cherokee in South Carolina 100 or 150 years before that, you did not wear it as a badge of honor for the safety of your family, unless you wanted your cabin to be lived in by others while you were in Oklahoma. Take care, Charles Wyly I did a graduate Paper for Dr. Jack Scroggs, University of North Texas in Denton. Their library has an unreal amount of history of this period and of Texas German newspapers and books and some English Translations. 3. Hi, sorry about that- I did not mean Indians from India I meant the ones like The Eastern Cherokee Tribal headquarters and in the Carolinas. I know some were intermarried in the Eastern U.S. Why else would chiefs like John Jolly's dad, Jesse Bushyhead, The Ridge and JohnRidge and other descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers have been in Arkansas- Missouri-East Oklahoma Cherokee Nation some before and some after the Trail Of Tears? According to the book by that name, many were well educated as Ministers, Doctors (Dr. Peter Hurd McNair) and other professions and had plantations with mansions before they were forced out of The Georgia Gold Fields and other choice real estate. As soon as some were across the Mississippi- or on it- they came to East Texas , many useing Indian names with the encouragement of their adopted brother Sam Houston, Pres. of the Republic of Texas. Sam said all north and East of Tyler , Texas was Indian reservation when he was President of the Republic of Texas. The Texas Alabama- Coshuta Reservation and Cherokee County, Texas are far south of that. The next President said no reservations but individual settlers would not be disturbed, but tribal rights would not be respected. My wife's nephew and hundredas of others with roots in the Eastern U.S. began taking White Anglo, Irish. Scottish, or German names of kin or friends. He was a Smith of Smith, County, Texas. Remember- the Trail of Tears and Indian Policy were not the same in the Republic of Texas as in the U.S. and well educated Indian intermarrieds knew this to be a chance to escape U,S. policies. If you live in Texas anything east of the Mississippi is Eastern by a few hundred miles.
