Just a note on the Stones - Jasper Newton Carey died 20 Sept 1882 in Hempstead County, AR and was buried in Bateman cemetary where his wife Nancy Elizabeth Stone Carey Lewis was later buried. They were married 26 Jan 1870. Nancy Elizabeth remarried Terrell Lewis after Jasper passed away. The Selden gin Stones were a different set of Stones from the Oakdale/Huckaby Stones ( Nancy Elizabeth Stone Carey Lewis, James T. Stone, Sam Stone et. al.) The Selden gin Stones, Austin Avery Stone, were descended from Hiram Avery Stone and Dovie Ellen Long Stone who were from Randolph County, AL and Paulding County, GA respectively. They moved to Salem community around 1874. Best regards from Rex Carey from Midlothian and related to both sets of Stones.
Hi, we only lived in Hamlin 9 months and went back 25 yearslater to check on some land my wife's dad won and boutht adjoining in Stnewall , Jones and the other county there- just 80 acres on the RR- they had never had a Tax sale to collect unpaid taxes as long as the Rountd Top Oil field was pumping. Mr. Riley thought the land was worthless when he first got it. I suspect it was part of the public park there- no one could build there then because of title foulups and land claim switches after oil was struck. My doctor now is a Dr. Raley in the Hillcrest Baptist Hewitt Clinic, in a strip of Waco between Hewitt and Woodway, off Hwy 84. Ever hear of him? Charles Wyly
I have a Double first cousin born Peggy Wyly. Also, Grady Langford today is President of West Bank and Trust in West and Hewitt, Texas. Some of his family ran Bynum school busses and she was School secretary and tax collector. Grady mrried Marquita Lavender, born Rawls, Texas(or is it Ralls?) Happy hunting Charles Wyly
Hi, I think I am kin to all the Stones in Erath County, I think, send me some first names. Were they from Arkansas and Huckaby or the Stones from elsewhere who settled in Selden?James T Stone Sr. born 9/8/1799, Lexington, Rock Bridge, Virginiad. Flat Creek, (or is it Flat Rock Creek?) Bedford, County, Tenn. (Also the birthplace of Neil McLennan, organizer of McLennan, Bosque, and Erath County, with others, at the direction of the Texas Legislature. ) Next Generation (I have the children , but will give outlineof my line- will send more if it fits you.) James T/ Stone Jr. b. Flat Creek, Bedford Co. Tenn. 1/2/1827m. Sarah Bateman b. 10/10/1827 Next:: Nancy Elizabeth Stone (from records of Grace Ramage livingston) (also Aunt Sis and Anunt Liz).b/ 11/5/1851 d. 10/14/1922, b. Bateman Cemetery, Arkansas married Jasper Newton Carey b. 8/17/1848, Henderson Co. Tenn. d. 9/22/1852 Nashsville, Arkansas (from my mother's records)Sarah remaried a J.T. Lewis. Her sons I knew in Erath County were Grandad John Henry Carey of Arkansas, Huckaby, Pea Ridge, Texas and his brothers Sam and George. George was the father of Lonnie Carey & grandad of David Carey, who now owns land from south of Dr. Hatchett's Selden mansion east to the Duffau Creek. His wife's Cook family owns Dr. hatchetts retirement home in Selden adjoining his land. I attended High school with Teal, Toby and James Iv or V Stone, cousins of mom. Mom was in Stephenville Nursing Home with cousins Daisy McNeil Stone and Clory Stone Stewart. Cousin Rex Carey sent additions to my Stone info and 30 or so more names of children of the above. One was apparently a scout and translator for Col. John Sevier and Cols. Gillesoie in final Indian battles around Etowa, the Blue Peace City of Refuge sacked and burned by Andrew Jackson's orders and the ashes were scaterred. Your Cherokee rolls may show some of these as intermarried and claiming Cherokee Nation land in Arkansas. Christopher- I remember Leonard Christopher well. I think he married a Selden Stone. He farmed south of Johnsville School with Davis and Beach land between him and Skipper's Gap. Leonard was a good baseball player if farming didn't interfere. I was always told the Stones of Selden Gin and one with the Weeks- Stone Thresher setup were not related to the Huckaby group. The first group above contained a Bro. Stone who travelled some with the Campbell Brothers in the Church of Christ Reformation movement and sometimes debated on their side. Velma Kay Hugghins, of Selden and Houston, a Wyly grandchild, said one of her mother's Stone Ancestors was this Debating Stone and another ancestor was a Baptist who used to debate against them on several occasions. Small world, Isn't it. I knew Johnny Kilcrease and his sisters and blind dad. I never had connected them as you said. There were a few times that their entire family picked cotton or pulled bowls for dad and Grandad at Selden. As you may know, there was a Dr. Langford in Stephenville and he owned the Chalk Mountain farm run by a black, Lee Rice, who was raised by a Dunn near Dublin. When Mr. Dunn was leaving Alabama, he told neighbors goodbye and found that Mrs. Rice had died, so he raised Lee and his 2 sons near Dublin. See Marilyn Mills Ewers History of the Three Way School. One of mom & dad's friends at Selden was Amabelle Allison, mother of Tarleton Football coach (retired) Johnny Dunn, a fellow SHS graduate. Let me know which Stone you are kin to. If you tie all these names together, you see why we at Johnsville and Selden used to joke about going to Hico or Glen Rose or Dublin to date someone we weren't kin to. Then I found out we had to check them out too. I met my wife at Tarleton, a Clyde athlete, born Levelland, but her father was raised at Cleburne. Our Tennessee ancestors in early 1800's attended church and cpmmunity meetings together. Take care, Charles Wyly
RE: STONE Family I would desire to locate any dsecendants of James Hiram Stone(1885-1964) and Eva Lustre Laney (1888-1942). He was the son of Hiram Avery Stone & Dovie Ellen Long. Sorry to send thru list but can't find your email address, Charlie. I also am interested in persons from Hamlin. A.V. (Aaron Van) RALEY and his wife Effie were my grandfather's brother and sister-in-law. I remember them having a daughter who married Bill SMITH and they had a son they named Raley SMITH. I was around 10 so must have been 1945 when I meet them the only time. Do you know of them? Thanks, Marlene
Thank You George but I do not know much about the Langford Family. John Kilcrease buried at Clairette had two children by Ella Marie Langford in Falls Co. she died at an early age and is buried at Rosebud along with John's father William, brother Ben Kilcrease and Ben's wife OM Langford. Brothers married sisters. John Kilcrease Sr. never remarried but raised Beatrice (my grandmother) and JC Jr. by himself and help of family there in Erath County. After Ellen or Ella died he moved to Erath around 1900. I was in hopes other Langfords were there to help John raise his children such as Ben and OM. John Kilcrease Sr. was a carpenter and built several of the homes and buildings that still stand in and around Clairette. I appreciate any info you care to share with me. Didn't mean to start a virus of Peggys but it will keep Bill McCarty alert. peggyh@pernet.net Peggy of Bridge City
Peggy, My cousin married a Langford in Stephenville about 100 years ago. Her name was McAdams. -----Original Message----- From: Peggy Harrington [mailto:peggyh@pernet.net] Sent: dimanche 17 octobre 1999 13:51 To: TXERATH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ERATH] Another Peggy! Didn't realize there were so many Peggys on the Erath site and sorry for any confusion. I will sign off with location also each time. I have deep roots in Erath County also with family still living there. I am researching the following surnames in Erath; BARNETT, CHRISTOPHER, KILCREASE, LANGFORD, LOWRIMORE etc, STONE. I am kin to all Kilcrease names in Erath and the majority of the Stone names. I also have learned a lot from the site and truly appreciate hearing all the stories and information pertaining to it's history. Any information on the above surnames is deeply appreciated and I am more than glad to share what I have with others. I am researching John Allison of TN who took his family around 1830 to Arkansas and was on the wagon train that came to Texas with the Parker Family. John Allison's son William F named Cynthia Ann Parker in his will. Our Allison research group does not know the reason for this at this time. John Allison's sons William F, Elihu C and James A are named as early settlers of the state of Texas and all receiving land grants in East Texas when Texas was a Republic. Elihu and James A went on to Williamson County and settled until their death. My mother was a Christopher living in Erath and Hamilton counties but descended from that Allison family.
