    1. [ERATH] Moffat-Mefford-Wyly-Arendell- Change of Address
    2. Charles A. Wyly
    3. Hi, Mike and Joann have an address as Yahoo.com, but Yahoo says they do not have an active account in their name. Can anyone please send me their current E mail address? They have connection through Roy Mefford or his sisters to Fred Wyly, father of Ben at Houston. Fred and wife, sister of Roy, stood up for a Keith wedding at Green's Creek as is in Archives of Txerath. I am still trying to connect them to Tom Arendell's family and either Higbee- or Higdon, who were related to Mr. Foshee of Stephenville and to my Grandmother Ida Katheryn Moxley Wyly- one of Grandma's sisters married an Arendell, one an Arnoild, and one a Darnell. Fred Wyly above was the son of Benjamin Franklin Wyly, who ran the Atlanta Wyly Wholesale Groceries and accessories aqt Peachtree and Pryor. He came to Stephenville in 1890, after Ben Jr. had driven 3000 English Sheep from Atlanta to San Angelo, and by contract deliverred them to Crow & Trammel. Part payment was Selden or Crockett school ranch, residences in Stephenville, nd a store on west side of the square, where Ben Sr. , with an eye patch and jr. , both with parrots on their shoulders. Ben Sr. is buried on his farm in Comanche County with 6 or 8 other Wylys. Ben's Uncle Augustin Clayton Wyly was in Liverpool England during part of the Civil War, trying to sell cotton , some through Mexico, and buying for his store. Apparently the Confederate Govt. had temporary records and offices on the 4 th store after Sherman started marching to the Sea from Jackson. In Jacksi=on he burned most of the town but the City Hall, built around 1840 and still in use. The Basement had Confederate Records stored in the Masonic Hall in the baement- and Sherman did not burn it . He knew the records were there. When the war was over, Sherman returned to his own plantation and refused to free his own slaves in court and with confrontation with law officers.he said he fought to save the Union, not to free Slaves. I wish personally they had listened to the 3rd party views when Lincoln was elected. Texas Germans were in this group who considerred slavery as an evil which should bepeacefully eliminated. Their candidate nationwide was either Breckenridge or Buchannan. and they wanted all slaves and indentured servants and Chinese Railroad workers freed after they were educated and trained for skills and vocations. some subsidy to be paid to the owners to help them adjust to the new economy. As a result of hotheads we lost more men in that war than we have ever lost in any other war to date. The 3rd partiy rallies in San Antonio led to riots and and shootings, but few deaths. Most activity was in front of German Menger Hotel and in Alamo Plaza. The south was thrown into turmoil. and all races, land owners and freedmen in the Deep South had a few bleak years facing starvation, except for Black Eyed Peas, which the Yankees thought were cow feed or weeds, so they did not destroy or burn them. Anyhow, 2 of the little Wyly girls died in Liverpool, Eng. of Diptheria and today retired volunteers are doing research and legal work to complete a Confederate Memorial Trail of 80 or more graves in Liverpool , researched and marked and some DNA testing for ID of heirs.0r kin. This would include a Gammon family. Some plan to go to England as these graves are listed and ceremonially redicated. and re marked with historic Markers. Records of these activities and recent songs on CD and poems of the Little Girls who died on Foreign Soil are being added to at the Confederate Research Center in Hill College, Hillsboro. Texas behind theOutlet Mall on I-35. Wonder if Tarleton would be intereasted in them?? Take care, Charles Augustine Wyl;y Any help apreciated. Mike and Joann want photos. I tried to send some but the address has changed.

    3. Would anyone have any information about Lafayette W "Pat" Greenstreet, "The Blacksmith" or "The Big Irishman" who had a Blacksmith shop in Stephenville or Erath TX. It was often said of him, "if Pat can't make it out of metal it can't be made." This was between 1880 and 1900. I found a burial site in the Old Stephenville Cemetery for his wife Lucinda and a son . He was my unknown grandfather. I thank you for any and all advice. Edwina

    3. Hi Cindy, Benjamin A. Holt was b. 31 Jan 1853 in Pike County, AR, died 8 Jan 1904 at Huckabay, TX. He's son of Benjamin F. Holt and Mary F. McFarland. Ben A.'s wife, Alabama "Bama" Jones was b. 7 Jan 1859 in Pike Co, AR. I don't know when she died, or where. She's the daughter of Charles Wesley Jones and Mary Jane Copeland. Alabama descends from Rebecca Norman and Charles Jones, formerly of Union Co, SC.--to Flat Creek, Bedford Co, TN, to Pike and Howard Counties, AR. Later-- Jerri I've got lots of family there, as well as Mitchell Co, TX. and Colorado City, TX, too--some of the kin of the above folks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cindy Shipman" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2003 3:32 PM Subject: Re: [ERATH] Benjamin A. 3. The Huckabay book is a little over 200 indexed pages, softbound and runs $20 (plus postage.) It includes an alpha list of the known burials (marked and unmarked), death record and obit if available locally. One of these books was donated to the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. and when they accepted it they sent a nice letter commending the documented research that went into creating it. [We donated the list of burials for all of our cemeteries to the Erath County GenWeb Archives.] I don't have any books on the shelf right now, but we'll be printing some in the next couple of weeks. In addition to Huckabay, we have also done the Exray Cemetery ($15) and the Hannibal Cemetery ($10). The Hannibal book includes some abstracted biographies and Confederate pension records. The United Daughters of the Confederacy awarded Jefferson Davis Silver Stars to the students who produced it. This year's project is the Liberty/Liberty Valley Cemetery (and will be more like the Hannibal book), and it will be completed soon (to coincide with their late April cemetery work day.) The revenue from the book sales go back into the project to fund more research and community service activities. All of our books were also donated to the Stephenville Museum, Stepheville Public Library, Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University, the Dublin Public Library, the Hamilton Co. Genealogy Library, and the Comanche Public Library. We'd be happy to share any research about specific individuals, but the books are really great stories about the communities. And the people are all so inter-related by blood and marriage, that having the whole book to read is a treat. 1. [ERATH] Genealogy Scam
    2. Barbara Ann
    3. Please excuse duplicate postings--but this message came as a warning from one of the State Lists we belong to... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- FORWARDED MESSAGE Hi Everyone: The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on. END OF FORWARDED MESSAGE ----------------------------------------------------- Please take care in sending money to any genealogy sites on the Web unless they are very well-known and trusted. 3. Oh Jerri - I can see we need to visit. The Huckabay Cemetery is located on land donated by the Copeland family and is adjacent to the A.B. Copeland's place and just across the street from the Huckabay Church of Christ in our rural community here at Huckabay. I'm on my way out to a movie this afternoon, but I'll run over tomorrow and take some digital snaps for you if your mailbox will hold them (they're about 25 K compressed.) Sarah and Samuel E. are bother buried at Huckabay as well as James. H. Gunn and Elizabeth Gunn. We also found a reference that Mrs. John Gunn was buried at Huckabay in June or July 1939, she was the daughter of the Moons (best that we could tell.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerri Ritter" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2003 3:04 PM Subject: [ERATH] Samuel Gunn > Looking for info on family of Samuel E. 3. Jerri - my students did extensive research in the Huckabay Cemetery two years ago and published a book including all the marked graves, local obits and death records. B.A. Holt has a marker but not Alabama (nor any other Holt.) There aren't any 1904 newspapers available, so we did not find an obit. We're always collecting info about the burials as it becomes available - someday we'd like to update and revise the book. Do you have info about Alabama's interment or other information you could add to our work? Thanks!
