    1. [ERATH] Mental Hospital in San Antonio
    2. There is still a state mental hospital on South Presa in San Antonio. I don't think it is well known but there are also two cemeteries on the hospital land. However---- the stones are just numbered, no names. You have to go to the personnel office inside and show proof of relationship and the death date before you are given the number of the grave. Both cemeteries are surrounded by fences and the gates are LOCKED. You have to get a guard to open the gates,, and they will only do that after approval from the personnel office. The office personnel are quiet nice and went the extra mile when I visited there in 2001. However, since they couldn't find a record of the individual I was looking for , I never found the grave. I was told that the only patients buried there were those who's family did not come and claim them after death. Hope this helps. Alice Moore

    3. Hi, some recoverred and came home. One in Erath County escaped twice, rode a bus home, and was in the kitchen when her husband got in from the field. He said she did not need to be in a State Home if she could find her way home. Some Erath County Doctors would send patients to State Homes for their own good as well as the family. 1. 1900 to 1935 most farm women washed clothes in a washpot NS RUBBED THEM BY HAND ON A rUB bOARD IN A TUB OF WATER IN A CHAIR TO STOOP OVER- wATER WAS HEATED BY WOOD. & CARIED FROM wINDMILL OR WELL 2. yES, THEY DID GET MEDICAL CARE - NOT THE SAME TYPE AS TODAY WITH REST HOMES WITH LTZHEIMER'S WINGS. 3. AT HOEING AND HARVEST AND OTHER BUSY SEASONS THE ENTIRE FAMILY WOULD BE IN THE FIELD TRYING TO HANG ON TO THEIR LAND. + 4. TEXAS ALSO HAD A SPECIAL SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF IN AUSTIN. cOUSIN MARVIN SHANNON MARRIED DAD'S FIRST COUSIN ELBERTINE MOXLEY- HER GRANDPARENTS IN SELDEN. .HE OBTAINED A LAW DEGREE FROM UNIV. OF TEXAS AND HE AND BROTHER FRED RAN THE SHANNON FUNERAL HOMES AND AMBULANCES AND A CEMETERY AND SHANNON LIFE INSURANCE. MARVIN COULD SHOW CUSTOMERS THE DISPLAY ROOM OF COFFINS AND BY TOUCH COULD QUOTE PRICE AND HIS SECRETARY TYPED THE CONTRACTS.. HE ALSO PLAYED IN A COLONIAL cOUNTRY CLUB GOLF CHARITYWITH BOB HOPE AS HIS PARTNER. THEY PLACED A BOARD ON THE GROUND POINTD TOWARDS THE NEXT HOLE AND GAVE HIM THE DISTANCE AND HE SAT HIS OWN BALL. Marvin was talking to others at Kiwanis Club one day in Fort Worth about golf. Another man said" You can't play Golf". Marvin said "I can beat you, the man said- That's a bet- Marvin said " You pick the place and I will pick the time". The man named the course, and Marvin said "Friday Midnight". lso, Texas has 4 Texas State Land Board Veretrans Homes- one in Floresville was opened after the Civil War. Other 3 are at Temple, Bonham, and Big Spring. These ARE NOT U.S. G.I. HOSPITALS. My Aunt Mary Ella Wyly , selden raised, was a Captain in U.S. Army Nurse Corps, 1939-46. in several Southeast Asia battle zones. She is 89 and ridses her scooter cair some- walks some, and is dearth on the Dominoes. Her coousin H.D. Kay, Jr. , Selden raised, was also in Temple home and passed away last month during the icestorm. Residents there use Scott & White Hospital and qualify for disability Vets pensions. Some drive cars. With Aid and Attendants instead of Medicaid they have several dollars more pay than the home charges.Thy picktheir own Doctors from the Temple area. See the site on the net about the Texas State Veterans Homes If you are really interested visit the manager in person and follow his directions and you can be admitted in a week or so. Doing it by mail or computer could take 6 months. You should run down every medical and Dental and Hospital record and perscription for the last several years for the application. Cousin H.D. had Altzheimer's and was in a special wing, but came to programs and Bingo and musicals with other patients , He was a retired Vocational Ag Teacher and Tarleton and A&M Grad. some drive off the grounds daily and eat out. . They should have some missing links in these 4 homes, esp, the Floresville Home, now open over 130 years. Take Care, Charles A. 3. Sorry, In Central and North exams the only State Homes for those who could be treated today, often with Lithium and other medications and therapies, were in Rusk, Wichita Falls, Austin, and Terrell. There must have been others. Most who died there in or because of the economic crash of the Great Depression. were brought home to be buried. Some recovered and lived out their last years at home. Don't confuse State Mental asylums with San Angelo State Institution for Tuberculosis with the dry air, rest, and good food and medicines of the day. Also, the State operated Homes for what we call Special Education classes today. Only the violent go to Mexia or Abilene State School. Mexia was built in Army Barracks buildings between Mexia and Tehucana- Tawokani- (sp).for German Prisoners of War who were allowed to help local German farmers around Malone when farm labor was short. I visited several of these homes , both private and Public homes . Mexia was open to students of Education or Psychology to visit and observe. It was mostly severe Epileptic, Downs Syndrome, and severe cases. Some , including a the only true Microcephalic I ever saw were peaceable and would hoe a garden , but had to be told what to do and when to do it and when to quit. Anyother time some just stared. Most schools had wards for severe deformities who would never leave bed. One private school in Dallas contracted to State of Louisiana to care for their handicapped. Many REst homes, such as the one in Robinson would keep residents of Mexia school in one ward in Robinson. It was illegal to fence them in , thanks to Judge William Wayne Justis (sp) of Tyler- but we can fence students in and out of Public Schools with admission by ID Card only, such as Trimble Tech in Fort Worth. The only home in 1960's which did not allow Graduate Stuents to study and report on conditions was Abilene- there there were scheduled guided tours and one could join a special group, such as Church group with a program. DON'T OVERLOOK ANY OF THESE HOMES FOR MISSING LINKS- Some in Mexia were married and had children, but would return for short term treatment on their own. Not sure about Texas, but in Georgia, look for the GEORGIA BLACK BOOK- about 2 inches thick, . It listed any adult sent to State Prisons or Mental institutions. I know of one link in Georgia where the man had a habit of getting soused with bad moonshine and abusing his wife and kids. After a group of men called on him one night without hoods, they fold him they would see him in Jail the next report. And they did. He was dried up- or told to keep Lead and some metals away from his still, or quit drinking. One Wyly raised his son for a few years. He was released and moved to South Carolina and lived a very respectable life. No names, please. I have heard of some in ErathCounty who had " Jake Leg" paralysis from the lead from a Still with lead or a Zinc Radiator for the cooling coils. In 1960's a Mrs. Kreuger of Meridin was president of Texas Spastic Society and was approved to have a State Home there. Locals objected and she could not get land or local backing. Her husband ran a shop on Hwy 6 in Meridian and installed plastic beds on wooden Rental Trailers. She kept Downs Syndrome and Spastics and Fort Worth Star- Telegram sponsored annual workshops led by her. March of Dimes officials sat and booed and laughed at her. her daughter had a withered arm, but finished Clifton College and attended NTSU one year and became a Registerred Nurse. Also, one young lady in a Wheel chair was brought there in a wheel chair- with tests showing a very high IQ. A few months she returned to her Millionaire parents pushing her wheel chair. She learned it was not a disgrace to have a handicap, but a challenge. Sorry it took more space than I meant to, but if we are not aware of the with such conditions in our heritage, how will we ever learn when outside help and medication might return one to a no=Ma life? 3. Are you asking, if the state mental hospital(s) was/were a good place in the early 1900s? Most of the people I recall reading about (including Laura Shellnutt of Duffau and Texana Fulfer Dorris of Exray and others I can't recall by name) committed suicide while at the state hospital. I sincerely doubt that it was a "good" place ... up until the mental health reforms of the 1970s-80s. I don't recall any local people being committed to any facility other than then unit at Terrell in the period of 1880s through 1910. A history of the Terrell hospital is at http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/TT/sbt1.html . At the same resource, there is also a history about your original query - the hospital at San Antonio, click on http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/SS/sbs4.html . The San Antonio unit became the state's only teaching hospital (in the care of the insane) about 1912. 3. In retrospect that is probably a difficult question to answer. Most of the state hospitals at that time had many patients who had TB. Patient populations at that time could also include mentally ill individuals, those who had seizures, and perhaps the mentally retarded. From my research the facility was staffed with nurses, doctors, there is references to "cottages". Visitors were documented. They had their own cemetery. Placement of a family member there was probably a difficult decision at that time. Many of the hospitals at the time had small farming areas where they could raise vegetables, I believe one had a dairy. So they were almost complete communities. Currently the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation is in charge of the operation of the state hospital and state schools. You might check their web site, there may be some early histories there. Not sure. For the mentally ill, care has come a long way since 1900. Advances in drugs at this time are amazing, in 1900 almost nill. So as you evaluate the "goodness" of the place, you also have to think of the choices the family faced in 1900. For researchers that are looking for relatives that were in the TX hospitals, you can write to the hospital, in care of the medical records department. State who you are looking for, the period of admission and your relationship to the individual. Records do still exist for the very early admissions although they will be brief. Your request should be in writing and give them time to research the records. The conditions of the archives vary and the present staff are very busy. I would also bet that the hospital you are questioning my have a prepared history of the hospital. You might write to either the Public Information Officer or the Community Relations Office at the hospital and ask if they have a printed history they could send you. good luck...

    3. Hi, Follow me to Primitive Baptist Bosque Association - from Little Flock near Temple to Erath County to the Brazos River. Other associations are connected to this site by links in Coryen and Erath County 1. Open your Internet. 2.Go to search window on Home page and type in Google. Later, put it in your favorites. 3.In the Google Search window , type in BOSQUE COUNTY PRIMITIVE BAPTIST ASSOCIATION 4. first one is Bosque Couty. others in Erath and Coryell Counties and McKinney and more are listed below it. Many Erath County names in all these churches with detailed beliefs. Remember, back then , a Pastor was the only paid staff and he was sometimes paid with canned goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh deer, pork, or beef, , Fresh or dressed chickens, or anything of useful value. Ever been to a Preacher pounding? We had them in Bosque County. Bet thosae young student preachers got tired of canned squash. Some churches near a Railroad or the Interurban from Dallas and Fort Worth to Waco would send the pastor or guest speaker round trip ticket. and give him and his family a guest bedroom Sometimes they shared a 1 room school , some with Lodge upstairs and community activities downstairs and on the grounds, like Old Indian Creek Church, near Pleasant (Chigger) Hill off 281 opposite from Selden Turnoff. The Primitive Baptists followed the Creed of Presbyterian Calvinist Churches of 1700's and differences arose over instrumental music and over if some were Predestined to spend eternity in Hell. Most pastors were educated in other fields and preaching was part time. Missionary Baptists and BMA and Southern did not have a Creed, but a statement of basic faith agreed on by each church as they felt led. Take care, Charles A. Militia, , John Cleveland, and Gen. Ben Cleveland, both of War of 1812, Florida. They kept Jemima's husband &distant cousin , a Cleveland.from trying to take over the children heirs Louisiana interests. James R. was comfortablly well off by then and Elizabeth was married and independent, so they claimed none of their mom's land. , including Edwards and Cleveland children. The land was given to jemima by her dad Co. Be Cleveland of Rev. War, N.C. Militia. Lots of Sparks families in Erath County. Also, in 1946-50 the head mechanic at Stephenville Wolfe's Nursery was "Sonny Boy" Roberts, when dad and I worked there seasomally , since shipping time was not usually prime farming time. Any missing links here? Charles A. Wyly

    3. Hi, Yes I am interested. And thanks for postingthe Wood Family History, as you well know, Garvin D. Wood married Olive Clara Wyly in Selden. Garvin livesd across the Duffau from us and Olive's dad Oliver Cromwell Wyly #3 or 4 in 3 generations, who was Grandad Henry's brother. Olive was raised by Great Great Uncle Bill ( William Sevier_) wyly and Hatchett wife in the house now restored by Kevin Wood, the 6 or 7 th generation to live there. I attnded church and Selden School with W.A., Wood and little brother Caroll Lynn Wood . Our distant Cousin the Baileys, were related to Wood and Carey in Arkansas. but you could write another book on these Arkansas connections in Erath County. Thanks, Charles Wyly On Tue, 4 Mar 2003 14:23:20 -0800 "HaynesO'Neil" <[email protected]> writes: > > I haven't really been following this thread, but I do have > information on John > and Margaret Jones Copeland...their daughter Adoree Eliz. 3. Jerri, Maybe giving you my husband's line would help you to know what to send? And what you would like from me. The further back we go, the more I have. Margie Esta Hale 1891-1966 Robert L. Hale 1867-? & Lillie Burns 1874-? Alexander Hale 1834-1871 & Sarah Ann Roberts 1834-1924 Stephen Marion Hale 1813-cr1880 & Rosamond B. Bourne 1818-1870 John Hale (III?) cr. 1757-1770-? & Mary B Hale cr. 1774 to ? (I do not know who John's parents were or on back. In fact I know nothing about John.) Mary's parents are: Lewis Hale 1742-1802 & Mary Burwell 1744-1809. Then these two on back. So anything you might have on these folks & collateral families would be great!
