    3. Hi....my name is Patty from California and I had a picture of my g-grandparents that had written on the back "The Rogers Place". They lived in Erath County in the mid 1800's. Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of that so I can see if it might be the same one that I have in one of my many boxes. Then we will go from there. I know that they lived on "The Hill Place" in Erath Co.,as share croppers. My grandparents were Tom and Betty Collum. Does anyone know where "The Rogers Place" might have been located? I would think that this would have been in the 30's time frame. > > Thanks! > > Jean > > ==== TXERATH Mailing List ==== > --- Author Retains Copyright --- > -- Copyright 2002 Author -- All Rights Reserved > Post to List: [email protected] http://www.selfroots.com > Unsubscribe request To: [email protected] > ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl -- MZ

    3. Randy, Thank you for the search for John and Nancy Holley. I know they lived in Erath county. I have Nancy's death cert. and it has place of residence as Dublin. So I assumed they lived in Dublin. She died in 1904 in Dublin. I just can't seem to find them. I am more interested in Nancy. She is my mystery woman. Appreciate the help you gave. Lynette

    3. Lynette, I did a quick look through Dublin the city in the 1900 census rolls and did not find a HOLLEY family. It is possible I missed them since I scanned fast. Also...Perhaps they did not live in the city itself but outside the city? Do you know for sure? 3. Nancy, we've communicated before and already shared information. Let me welcome you to the list! My Best, Randy Haynes Nancy Beinhorn <[email protected]> wrote:Hi, List: I am a new poster to your list. I have several family connections to early Texas and wish to explore my family in Erath Co., TX. My great grandmother was Nancy Elizabeth Howard, b. 1837, Nacogdoches, TX who m. James Carroll Rogers in Stephenville, Erath Co., in 1857. They were married by Justice of the Peace Dooley, reportedly one of the early marriages in a log cabin that later burned. Nancy's sister was Mary Carolyn Howard, b. 1836, who married William Franklin Stephen. My grandfather, Thomas Pitts Rogers, was b. 1866, in Limestone Co., TX but was married to my grandmother, Florence Virginia Womack, also in Stephenville, TX. I also believe that Nancy and Mary's brother, Leander Guy Howard, lived in Erath Co. My distant cousin, Homer Stephen, now deceased, reported that he was buried in an unmarked grave in Erath Co. Our Howard "cousins" are now trying to find any information on Leander or any of our Howard family. I would love to hear from anyone who recognizes th! e names any of these early TX settlers. 3. I've looked in the genealogy room at Tarleton but there were no ledgers like I was looking for. Perhaps they are in the attic ...years ago when I was in high school, a friend worked at the library and took me up to look at all the neat old books ...it was great (of course that was over 30 years ago and things have changed I suspect!). I'll check with Glenda and see what she has to say. Thanks... kathy > I believe that the old records that are at Tarlton are in the genealogy room > on the second floor of the Tarleton library. 1. Re: [ERATH] Asylum records
    2. There is a collection of county records housed at Tarleton's Dick Smith Library. Ones that patrons use frequently are in the locked room on the main floor of the library and the others are in the attic. There is a binder there at the library that lists all the the materials that are in the collection and I don't know if those items are available by searching the online catalog of the library. Just in the past few days I have scanned the entire list twice looking for some records that I needed and I think I would have noticed something as exotic as an asylum log book, but I've locked myself out of my car twice in the last four days so who knows! Most of the county materials housed at Tarleton are county commissioner, county court, county school district, and odds and ends. Drop Glenda Stone an email at [email protected] for information about specific items in the collection. We should see if she'd provide us a complete list that we could have Annette and Janice post at the GenWeb Erath County page or add it to the GenWeb archives so that we don't all make Glenda crazy with our questions. And in addition to these original ledgers and indexes (indices?) Tarleton also houses a large collection of filmed county records for both Erath and Brown Counties. A list of those materials at GenWeb would be useful too. I might could find time to compile that list and post it over spring break. Would it be useful to anyone? 3. I love the Erath list....ya'll are such a good source of info about all kinds of things and have such a wonderful history to tell. Now I have a question and hope one of you can help me. I am trying to find out where my husband's g-grandfather, Timothy Woodward Shugart, went to medical school and where would I find him listed as a doctor in Texas? He is listed in the 1880 census(Comanche Co. living w/his brother-in-law, William D. Cox) as a physician. Next I find him in the 1900 census(Erath Co., thanks to Randy Haynes!) listed as a druggist(pharmacist). According to family, he filled both positions throughout his career. Can anyone tell me where I need to start looking for this information? I am a genealogy babe and don't have a clue as where to begin. Thanks, Erath list for any help in this area. ~Janet

    1. [ERATH] Asylum records

    3. The time I found the book, it was a number of years ago but when I was told that I would have to get a court order, that was maybe last year. Yes, the people have changed but the folks there now seem more eager to help than they were some years ago. Orginally, the book was with the public records but was no where in sight the last time I was there ...in fact, I looked around in the basement for a long while before I asked. Cindy, as you keep your eyes open for the book, it was a very old, small (maybe 8" X 12") book ...not like the ledgers the probate records are kept in. Someone told me that many of the old county records (the originals) had been moved to Tarleton but when I asked there, they didn't know of any (or course I might have asked someone that didn't know). I knew some things were on film but I was puzzled by the disappearance of the book and the fact no one knew anything about it. I've not had a lot of time to *really* dig into this ..too many other things going on. If anyone runs across it, please let me know! 1. [ERATH] New to Erath List
    2. Nancy Beinhorn
    3. Hi, List: I am a new poster to your list. Thanks, Nancy in CA [email protected]

    3. Your email cleared some long dormant cobwebs. I recall Doc Terrell treating my grandmother, Maude Edmonds for cancer in the late '40's and early '50's. I was then in my early teens, but old enough at that time to contribute blood. We would go to his clinic where we lay side by side while the transfer was in progress. I can also recall when I was very young, probably 4-6, going to the wake of a neighbor, Mr. Lott, the open coffin setting in the parlor draped in cheesecloth, candles lite throwing shadows across the dimly lite room, numerous neighbors sitting around quietly carrying on conversations. Outside, women sat on the front porch in cane bottomed chairs, while the men stood in the front yard propped against the large blackjack oaks. It was an eerie time for a little fellow. 3. Hi, People in State homes were usually committed by order of a District- maybe some county Judge You didn't drive down and commit someone like enterring a local medical hospital. This kept someone from commiting an unpopular relative in violatio of his Civil Rights. Judge William Wayne Justice of Tyler rulad thatthis was necessaryforpatient protection. He went beyond the Doctor's recomendation and said handicapped children and severely retarded or epileptic had Civil Rights and it was the local school's job to educate them , with maximum possible mainstreaming and some self contained. As a Retired teacher who passed Special Education State Exams for certification, I sometimes substitute teach inthat field and have lots of school computer calls to sub in self Contained rooms. One I worked had students with Downs Syndrome (NTSU and Tarleton profs in 1950's called it Mongoloid"Today , one in Midwayn Schools carry groceries to our cars and others work for Goodwill and other sheltered environments. Some pick up litter on Highways. In one class we had one with severe Tourette Syndrome outbursts, sometimes silent. The teacher would physically restrain him on a mattress and talk soothingly to him until he was not a danger to himself I get School District Computer calls to sub in self Contained "Life Skills" classes in grades 1 thru 8. The recording says, Must be able to feed and change diapers on students, some in Wheel chairs, up to 6 th or 7 th grade. We also have them in elecrtic wheelchairs going to P.E. with mannstreamed and honors students. In the past one would send them to one of the State Schools for handicapped like Abilene, Denton, and Mexia. Now that is one option. One can still send some severe cases to special Rest Homes, but Judge Justice's rulings say they cannot be physically detained or fenced in without a Court order saying there are a danger to themselves. I knew one case- grown child of Incest, who was brought to a Rest Home , and custody was signed over to the State, and the kin who brought her said that they were not to be called again even if she died. She required full time care and kept someone from church and normal social life Afterwards she had full time trained professionals careing for her, but even she could not be locked in or fenced in Most do not want toleave a place of security.
