Hi, I will check farther on this line. My Grandmother ida Kathryn Wyly Moxley had a brother born in Stephenville named John Bolton Moxley. He married Etta Robinson , a descendand of Choctaw Bill Robinson, Frontier preacher, sometimes organizing frontier Churches with Great Great Grandad William Pinckney Hatchett. Uncle John named one of his daughters Kathy or Kathryn after grandmother, his sister, but most spelled her name Catherine, some did not. Wonder where he got the middle name of Bolton? Calloway County, Mo. Records might clear some of this up. Uncle John worked in Fort Worth and ran a Used car lot after his shift downtown. Also, when we moved to Brandon, Hill County, one neighbor was Jess Bolton. His wife had a stroke which affected her speech but Jess, retired, was a busy Flea market trader in Forrest Hills market in Fort Worth and bought many pumps and equipment which he swapped or sold to Hill County Folk. He called us one night when she , had another heart, attack. We tried CPR but too late. Check below- It gets confusing when George Milton Moxley had a sister and a daughter with the same name, and several Arendells and Higdons and Arnolds and a Darnell are listed. Is Will D. Arendell who married Mary Jane Smallwood in Erath in 1888 related to your Arendells? They had a daughter, Ethel. Would like to know more about this family! Aloha, Mary Ann (Smallwood) Bolton Mililani, HI
Hi, Fredrick Wyly was a son of Ben Wyly. He married the Mefford mentioned, then they later "Stood Up" at a Keith Wedding in Green's Creek Baptist Church, when a Keith was married. it was a nice spring day and friends came from miles around for the Wedding. The crowd was too large for the meal planned for the Families of Bride and Groom, so each wagon or buggy had killed a Chicken, picked fresh vegetables, opened canned fruit and home canned Grape juice and cooked a roast or whatever. Wagons and buggies spread to trees near the church and smaller groups shared their lunches and visited with friends until Sundown, then returned home after dark- >From my living in the county I will name a few common dishes they would have eaten: 1. Mustang Grape juice and Jelly 2. Home baked cornbread and biscuits 3. Wild Plum Jelly and Canned Indian Peach Pickles 4. Fresh Garden produce- raw and cooked. 5. Beef and Pork and Chicken, home raised, home killed and home canned or cooked 6. Polk Salad or Poke Salet Greens 7. Sometimes Rabbit, fish, and Deer 8. Home raised honey 9.Fresh Peaches, plums & Berries 10. Field Corn, fresh or canned in jars. 11.Pecan Pie from local pecans and Syrup from local Syrup mills. Time to eat, Charles Wyly From: Mike and Jo Ann Moffat To: [email protected] Hello,I just came across our message on rootsweb that you are trying to find us. We still have our yahoo.com e-mail address. About Fredick Wyly and Mary J. Mefford. Mary Mefford was a sister to my grandfather James Edward Mefford. She wasn't a sister to Roy Mefford they were cousins. Mary Mefford was the oldest child of George Washington Mefford and Serena Jane Pickering. George Washington Mefford was the son of William Ewing Mefford and Lucinda Findell Arendell. Lucinda Arendell Mefford was a sister to Thomas Arendell. (Thomas was the father of Henry Russell Arendell right?) That would be your Moxley connextion. I can send you all the brothers and sister of Mary J. Mefford Wyly if you want them. Hi, this is an answer to a man who is researching for the new Rube Burrow Museum in Alabama near the Tombigbee Waterway- home of the Burrow Families. Since Rube and Uncle lived on Cottonwood Creek , Dublin,Texas, someone might be interested. The Alabama researcher is Calvin Dean- or [email protected] or go to the Tombigbee Site via Google.com and click on people- heroes- or History. The Alabama Rube Burrow story is there without Texas being mentioned. -or was this 2 men useing the same name???This is longer than normal but may have a link or two which would help someone. --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "Charles A. Wyly" <[email protected]> Hi, The info below is from GRAND OL' ERATH-the story of a Texas West Cross Timbers County, by H.G. (Grady ) Perry, 1974-,Stephenville, Erath County. Texas. His sources include info from Rube's second wife from Alexander, Texas- on the old Texas Central- then Katy Railroad. This second wife was the aunt of his barber friend (and my barber sometimes) E.E. Haley of Stephenville (Part Cherokee) . Grady had a letter from one of Rube's granddaughters, 1974, in California, wanting to know more about Rube, her grandad. Grady also grew up near Dublin, and Joel Burrow, Rube's Uncle , had a farm between Dublin and Alexander- a very respected man. Rube came to Stephenville from Alabama in 1873 and worked for his Uncle. He also had several business trips back then, and apparently had visited with or worked with Sam Bass, the notorious Bank and train and stagecoach robber. When he returned he had some cash, which some thought he got from rounding up a few stray cattle and driving them to a cattle Trail, possibly Goodnight- Loving or John Chissum of Concho River Valley. Maybe not. Grady said Rube was said to have recruited Henderson Brumley, Nep. Thornton, Joe Jackson, and William and Jim Brock at one time or another. He robbed his first Texas Train , after leaving Sam Bass, Bellvue, Clay County, Texas, another in Gordon, Palo Pinto County, Texas, then robbed the same train crew twice in Benbrook, Tarrant county, Texas He would return to his Uncle Joel's each job until he bought a house across Cotonwood Creek from his Uncle's farm and lived there with his second wife, doing some farming. he left for Alabama with a Texas Reward of $7000.00 Railroad money on his head. he never robbed a train in Erath County .He was killed shortly after his arrival back in Alabama. Wonder if the man in Alabama claimed his reward? Who was he? Grady said if any family has no black sheep, they haven't looked good. Now a relative of his is Governor of Texas. In Texas Rube did not have a killer Reputation like John Wesley Hardin or Billy the Kid AKA William Bonney AKA William Henry Roberts AKA Billy McCarty AKA Brushy Bill Roberts I knew in Hico, Texas, down Hwy 6 from Dublin. Billy's aunt had married a McCarty then a Bonney in Oklahoma, where Billy visited his dad, a Civil War Vet, riding with Jesse James and Quantrill . Jesse James was said to have taught 12 year old Billy to shoot riding full speed under a horse's neck. This version says that Billy Barlow, a Mexican cook and butcher was shot in the back by Pat Garrett, once Billy's Friend before the Cattle range wars on the Goodnight- Loving Trail around Lincoln, New Mexico. Barlow was buried in the grave marked Billy the Kid and present headstone placed by a movie Company. This is also the version taught by several P.Hd. Teachers and lawyers from Spanish Folk Tales of those loosing their Spanish land grants to commercial cattle ranches with some British money backing. Dr. Janary P. Valdez, attorney from De Soto,Texas has written a long poem of Billy's life. A former Hamilton County Attorney and County Judge, a Mr. Heffner, carried Brushy Bill back to Lincoln County to claim his promised pardon for testimony in Lincoln County Trials. Brushy Bill told Mr. Heffner where and when to turn after they were inLincoln County. A New Mexico judge refused to pay Pat Garrett the Reward money as he said he personally knrew Billy was alive and in Central Texas- the Brushy Bill I knew, who died on a Hico Street of a heart attack, age 93. One block south of his statue with pistols blazing is the Museum which has proofs of this version from several sources, including Dr. janary Valdez, an old friend of Lyndon Johnson. This story is also borne out by Historic reprints of the Tombstone ( Arizona) Epitath It was claimed that Billy killed 3 or 4 men in the Lincoln County Range Wars protecting his bos's cattle. He also killed a Jailer who had worked for a rival ranch. Eastern Pulp Magazines and Dime novels wrote all sorts of trash to sell scandal sheets and dime novels- like the Globe and National Inquirer of Today in the Supermarket checkout lines. Some authors had never been west of the Mississippi Sad thing some of this fictionalized info is bering set into secondary reference books and school Textbooks. The errors continue as sources for later books, some approved by Texas State Textbook Committee and sold to other Southwestern States. I was reading some new Textbooks up for adoption last week in Waco Schools, Not one Texas Textbook today even mentions the Texas Navy. More I study, more I think that if Admiral Moore had not left Annapolis at request of Sam Houston, to become Admiral of Texas Navy, Texas might have not won its independence. Admiral Moore had 4 large ships- 2 financed in New Orleans, and several smaller gunboats and armed Shrimpers, sort of a navy Militia, some privately owned. he sailed from Galveston to the Yucatan Peninsula where Yucatecians and Mayans were also rebelling against Santa Anna after he sent Congress home and became a Dictator, The Yucateans in old Spanish Ships and Texians Navy sealed or blocaded the Verazruz harbor before Santa Anna's Supply Ships left port. Look art yourt map. Santa Anna expected a supply ship in each river he crossed. Texians in the Runaway Scrape tried what Russians or General Sherman would have done- destroy all shelter and food as they approached San Jacinto. By then. Santa \Anna and Army were hungry, thirsty, and no Dr. pepper from Dublin or Waco ( Pardon the plug)> In other words the Mexican Army was a tired and unhappy bunch of campers. Also, Sam Houston had a spy in Santa Anna's camp- the Yellow Rose of Texas, or the San Antonio Rose- a high yellow slave in Alabama and freed in Texas, She would live with Camp followers - today we call them Haliburton or Brown and Root type civilian contractors who shined shoes, repaired equipment, did laundry, and cooked and polished for the soldiers. She would enter his tent and serve his meals and pour his drinks while she studied his maps. What did she send to Houston? We do not know, possibly she told him if there was a Mexican supply ship as they crossed the rivers.None were. I learned this in a Johnsville, Texas elementary school Texas music Textbook. First to 4 th grades had to memorize the version of the song written by Black Cowboys singing to calm a herd at night. Bob Wills of Turkey, Texas could have learned the song from the Matador Ranch cowboys-Some Black cowboys played Fiddle and Banjo for dances and musicals attended by Black and white., especially in theRolling Plains and Badlands below the Caprock. We learned the old version, We sang the song on KFPL Dublin Radio, Stephenville Studios in Arch Evans Tire store show room. She was a hero of the Texas Centenial in 1936. Today neither she or Admiral Moore's Texas Navies are mentioned in textbooks The Moore family and Admiral Moore settled in San Angelo, Texas after the Texas Revolution ( The third one, which worked). Good luck on your Rube Burrow Museum there on the Tombigbee. How far apart are the river and the Canal on I-20??? Take Care, Charles A, Wyly
Hi, I just got an inquiry about Rube Burrow of Dublin Area- they are finishing a museum back there about him- the info they have says Rube was a viscious killer and does not mention his Train roberies in Texas nort his Erath County home. Wonder if some of his "Business trips" by train could been back home there then back to Erath County??? Check Tombigbee Site- heroes link. try >http.//www2tombigbee.net1/sections/at_home/athome/hero04_2003html< or ask Google.com and it will find it . or contact me direct for info sent me. Pulp magazines wrote Burrow up as one of the most violent Outlaw in the South in History. Guess they never of Slave Runner and thief James Copeland of Mississippi- Alabama Area during and before Civil war. he was hanged and friends burned the courthouse trying to save him. He blamed his mom in his letter written the last night on earth because she was not firm on his discipline as his dad was. Talk about tryiong to fling a guilt trip. Take care, Charles A. Wyly

Charles, The first ten pages are just a small fraction of the people in the Erath Co. Census. There are over 200 pages, so I have a LONG way to go. I've been side-tracked of late. Hope to have the next ten pages within a month. These first pages are Precint 1 lying NW of the Rio Grand RR. I'm not even sure which part of the county this is. These pages are not from Stephenville. They are all farmers. My Best, Randy Haynes "Charles A. Wyly" <[email protected]> wrote:Hi, were these just from Stephenville? Hi, What was the origin of the Kirk family you mentioned. I just noticed it. There are Kirks in Marlin - Falls County- and was just wondering, as you mentioned them connected with Mingus, and Thurber, if they were of Czech or Italian Descent- some of the Europeans brought in by the TP Coal and Oil to mine coal and make bricks. Kirks in Marlin are both black and white. One Ron Kirk was Police Chief and ran for sheriff of Falls County. Were they connected to Erath County Kirks? Take care, Charles A. Hi, were these just from Stephenville? I know my ancestors and/or cousins listed below were in Erath County in 1900-some back to 1860's. Stone- Copeland- Wyly-Moxley- Fleming-O'Brien, Cherry-Arnold- Arendell- Darnell, and neighbors Hurley, Mills,Little , and most in Indian Creek ,m Selden (Hatchett) and Evans and several Wyly siblings married to Hatchett, Kay, Wood, and others should be on this census. Or were the records of each census taker published separately? Maybe I am sleeoy and missed something. Take care, and thanks for your information. Charles A. Hi, Tom, What do you know about Italians in Marlin and in Erath County? Vince Incardona, McLennan County Deputy, used to be in the West Kiwanis when I taught there. He spoke Czech and played Gituar a lot with McClennan County Sheriff Jack Harwell, who served as sheriff over 40 years. They had also played with Bob Wills and Tommy Duncan and the Texas Playboys in West in McLennan County and Westphalia Hall in Falls county. Seems that once, in Westphalia Hall, they announced to the Audience of all ages ( A Church Wedding Dance for all ages in the Westphalia Catholic Church hall) that various members of the band had learned a tune while in Germany, WW2, I suppose, They asked the group to give the name of the tune in English. Everyone sang or hummed along, but no one knew the name It was a German Folk tune, sometimes hummed to Babies. Since these were the only folk in Texas who knew the song, the Band played and recorded the tune as " The Westphalia Waltz". If I have it straight, Hoelschers who bought the last 90 acres of Grandad's farm in Selden, had cousins in Westphalia and have a Dairy near Kathy Tate on Kay land. Anyhow, in 1970's, Jake Tucker of West Lumber and others kidded Vince as to why he spoke Czech since he had an Italian name? He grinned and said that in Falls County , Italians were at the bottom of the Social and racial ladder and learning Czech raised their prestige considerably. and laughed. This year, in Vince's Obituary in Waco Tribune Herald it mentioned that Vince was born in New York City. That rang a Geneaologist's Bell to me- suggesting that his family may have been some of the Italians who were removed from West and East Coast, WW2, to Relocation camps inland as Security risks during WW2. Wasn.t there an Internment Camp between Marlin and Hearne- maybe 2- ? One for German Army Prisoners, like in Mexia and Cleburne and another for East Coast Italians? Erath County Czech and Italians were mostly brought from the Old Countries by TP Coal and Oil before 1900 to mine coal and make Bricks in Thurber, and upstairs over the Cage and Crow Bank in Stephenville was a Cage and Crow Italian Opera House on Erath County Courthouse Square. Irish Catholics and Czech - Italian Miners in Erath County attended separate Catholic Churches, Company owned in Thurber, and were assigned to separate mines until they learned English. I think the miners in Newcastle near Graham were mostly Czech, based on tales I heard in West from elderly men drinking coffee in West. Some settled in Eastland and Palo Pinto - more moved on. This same pattern shows up in Coal Miners of Northeast Oklahoma. One town nearer Tulsa than OKC still bakes Kolaches, Strudle, Koblasa, and Koblisneik, Guess you know that in Waco you can buy Chitlins and in Marlin it is Cavatini- only difference is in hoiw this part of the hog is seasoned. For more on this go to Google.com and ask for the San Francisco Library site giving day by Day activities of troops removing Japanese and Italian born from the West Coast during WW My next door neighbor was American born. His parents in San Francisco were not. His wife was born in Hiawaii. His family lost their business and home in California and were sent by Train to Louisville, Kentucky Relocation- concentration type camp. He was allowed to go th Seminary in Louisville and went to Japan after the War as a Baptist Missionary. One son now does Language problerms in research and sales of programs of Japanese American Computer programs and spends half his time overseas. He is a Baylor Grad, and dad now works with International Students in Baylor and a local church. I printed several pages- weekly from San Francisco Library site. and gave it to my neighbor for first 3 years. He was thrilled to see it. and rememberred some of it. Take care, Charles A. One of our membership has been doing research at the courthouse, but we do have something that shows Sam Houston, Governor, gave 160 acres of land to Martin Harper on August 29, 1860. Mr. Martin set aside a portion of that land for the Harper Cemetery. This is all very interesting. Thanks, Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles A. Hi, Sandra, isn't this the cemetery given by Sam Houston to the people of the Elk-Towash - Waco area? Seems that Jesse Chisolm, under Sam Houston also met the Indians of the area at Terry's Trading Post to negotiate friendliny or t least Tollerance of Anglos by the Indians there and at Comanche Peak near Grandbury and other sites before he m,oved on to Kansas with his Wagon and ox cart freight contracts to U.S. Govt to supply needs of Bureau of Indian affairs. Jesse was not a Trail driver, and never drove one cow trhrough Waco but surveyed his Freight trail from Red River North through Yukon, Okla. to Abilene, Kansas store. It was a Mr. McCoy, Railroad Executive who organized drives north to meet the Rail loading pens he had planned. Perhaps some confusion could have come from John Chissum of the Concho Valley driving catle from East Texas to the Concho Valley to fastten on the River grass. This trail from East Texas to Wyoming final grazing is still followed today by Diesel Cattle Trucks . Erath County land records were kept in McClennan County Archives of the County Tax office before Bosque and Erath Counties were organized. This shows on original Abstract of Wyly and Hatchett land in Erath and Bosque Counties. Before that, seems some were kept in Cameron. Take care, Charles A. Wyly Take care, Charles A. Dear Patty: The photo that I found with "Rogers Place' was of my grandparents taken out in the yard, with no buildings in the background. I will be more than glad to send you a copy of it if you like. I will continue to look through my boxes of photos to see if there are any others with the "Rogers Place" listed on the back. There was one that my mother wrote "Rogers Place" on the back but it was taken inside with a flash camera but think that it was at a different place where they lived, because the folks did not have access to flash cameras in the depression era of the 1930's. Let me know if you would like to e-mail the photo that I have.
