Hello again Mr. Wyly, It is of great interest to me--the stories of Mingus and Thurber. My great grandfather Ferd Hill had a store in Thurber during the boom years I would say possibly the 20's. He later lived in Mingus and had a dairy there and had 80 acres of pecans. I posted to the Rootsweb Palo Pinto site stories that my dad, Everett Jones told about his life in the Mingus area and things that he remembered happening. I believe the webmaster posted them under Ferdinand Hammond Hill. The night before my dad died, he began telling stories as he remembered them the more he talked the more I took notes. No one knew that his last remembrances would be about Mingus and some of the folks there. His Uncle Tom Boggus, married Nell Hill one of Ferd Hill's daughters. Uncle Tom was a bootlegger but also was elected to public office in either Mingus or Strawn. If any other of you folks in and around the Mingus, Thurber area know or have heard of any stories about the life there I would love to add more to my Mingus notes. Sincerely, Jean ----- Original Message ----- From: Charles A. Hi, Apparently Tom's box is full again. Perhaps he will see it here. My E mail company will store messages for a few days- short term. have that problem too sometimes and have to file or delete like Crazy- nothing for a few days then 15 to 20 in one day. In addition to Txerath news in letter below, Read all Historical Markers in Stephenville listed on a Texas list. The private non charterred bank of Cage and Crow on Northwest corner of Stephenville was 2 story. A marker there stated that an italian Opera House was in the second floor of the bamnk and many Italian and other European miners came to the Stephenville Cage and Crow Opera house over the bank. Not sure, but I think this was when Stephenville had open saloons instead of hiding behind the skirts of private Clubs of today. Bet that has cut in on the Mingus and Glen Rose trips . Also read the Erath County Historical calendars published by Dan Young - Brenda Lamb assisted on some of them. ( Historic calendars are old calendars- Historical calendars are recent printing from collection of Historic events day by day). Stephenville Century or 20 th Century club still publishes new calendars of historic events., different each year. I never went to Mingus except passing through to other towns. Hi my Estes came from mo&ar Malinda Estes was married to Thomas A Lefaber in 1855 lawrence county missouri, they were in Erath County Texas in 1860,that is where their daughter was born at,Luella B Lefaber 1860 i can,t fond anything on this family after 1870, they left Erath county texas and was back in missouri in 1870 then i don,t know what or where they went from there, thank you for replying marie in colorado [email protected]
The Estes family of Bovina were not related to Billy Saul Estes line. We lived and farmed for 4 years in the Bovina area and knew the family that way. There were also Estes families in Muleshoe for awhile but don't know anything about them now either. Norma
Hi, it just occured to me, there is an Estes chemical and farm Fertilizer company with many stores in central and West Texas., usually in same area as Wyloe Sprayers and Chemicals- mostly west of I-35, best I remember from doing Credit card advertising contract work about 10 years ago. Also, I and my wife have kin from Amarillo to Bovina to Roswell to Big Spring.and back to Van,and Houston, Texas. Two Erath County Moring Cousins now live on the Gulf Coast. This company had no connections to billie Sol Estes family. They should be on the internet. The owners of this application and supply company could be a missing link. I believe the Billy Sol Estes that was mentioned by Mr. Wyly is deceased..lived in Abilene for number of years. He was living in Earth, Lamb Co. Tx. when the "fertilizer tank business" happened. He has family still in Abilene. There are also or were some Estes living in the Bovina, Texas area in the 1950"s. Norma
Hi, this is a shot in the dark, but I wonder if your Estes families migrated to Clyde, Calahan County, Texas. My wife attended school there in 1950's with a Word Estes . Word's dad and mom were in the local commercial bird Fanciers organization with my wife's mom and dad. There were several semi retired folk raising hundreds of Parakeets each and other pet birds, and selling them to a buyer in Abilene Airport who flew them to the Chicago market. They traded with the Burkes Farm near Clairette, Erath County. Mr. and Mr. Estes were held in high regard by all who knew them. Mr. Estes was also a Real Estate agent and a staunch supporter of the Church of Christ. Word's older Brother Billy Sol was - and still is, I suppose, a Church of Christ lay minister. He had some problems borrowing more money than he had fertilizer tanks for colatteral and later , after settling legal problems, , declared bankruptcy and kept a Country Club as his legal home, a Grain truck as his " Horse and Wagon" , and a Cadillac and horse trailer as his " Family Transportation" under Texas Bankruptcy law. Another grad of Clyde High School was a "Slim" Willett who claimed to have written " Don't let the Stars Get in your Eyes" and recorded it- but that's another story in Abilene court records-and ran Abilene Battery Company. Hi, we had Meltons in Walnut Springs school. afew years later, onme of them ttended Hill College, Hillsboro and Rode Hill College van from Bosque County. he was majoring in Auto Tech and basic Jr. college academic courses. Seems he had served in Vietnam between High School and Jr. College. . Any connection between Melton and Helton? Seems possible to one who has seen so many misspellings of Wyly- all but one were wrong, of course for us. Mr. Wyly Thank you for your lee info. Afraid we don't have a connection.
Marcia, I was told that Davidson Miller left Comanche county and moved to Buffalo Gap, Taylor county ...don't know when he moved, but he was buried there in 1908 ...Buffalo Gap is not too far from Haskell. My Davidson Miller was born in McNairy County TN, in 1821. I've only started working on the Miller family and so far, have not run across a Samuel. I'll keep my eyes open for the name. If you see anything that might link him with Davidson, please let me know... Thanks, Kathy > To Kathy Tate: My ancestors are also Miller's who lived near Commanche in > Commanche County on a farm from abt. 1881-1882 to early 1900's.....then > they moved on to Haskell County........ where there was a large group of > Miller families whose patriarch was Samuel Patton Miller, Primitive > Baptist Minister near city of Haskell..... To Kathy Tate: My ancestors are also Miller's who lived near Commanche in Commanche County on a farm from abt. 1881-1882 to early 1900's.....then they moved on to Haskell County........ where there was a large group of Miller families whose patriarch was Samuel Patton Miller, Primitive Baptist Minister near city of Haskell..... I know that these Millers and other Miller families along with some Helton's, Spoon's and other families came by wagon train from around Maries county, Missouri in the early 1880's......maybe they are related to your Millers...........it has been difficult to track them without the 1890 census available.......Hope you can find them....... Hi, I have 2 Lees on my family tree- -one is through the Hatchett- Tuggle line. I do not know the complate Lee connections. I attended school at Johnsville with a Dixie Lee, but do not know any connetion. Descendants of Charles Lee 1 Charles Lee 1683 - ... +Dorothy .......... 2 George Lee 1715 - ................ +Mary Buford ...................... 3 Dorothy Lee 1749 - ............................ +Lodwick Tuggle 1741 - Tuggles , Tarrant and Herndons made Military uniforms for export world=wide from Bradford, England. for 400 years. Enterred through Jamestown, Virginia, where John Hatchett was from an orphan ship, age about 12 (Dad in Debtor;'s Prison) His grandad or G.G. was Burgess of Shrevesburg. His indentured contract was sold to John Farley, and he eloped with jane Farley against her dad's will before his contract had expired. John Farley was not a happy camper. .................................. 4 William Tuggle 1777 - ........................................ +Anna Dunn 1781 - Several Dunns show up from 1700's to the Dublin Sawmill Operator, Mr. Dunn, who was married to sister of Fred and Frank Wyly. Frank, Jr., age 17, drove 3000 English sheep from Atlanta to west of San Angelo as contracted to Trammel and Crow, of Stephenville and San Angelo. Mr. Dunn moved his sawmill to same area. last I heard it was still in use, cutting dead Pecan , Walnut and other hardwoods. Some of first Stephenville wood - not log, buildings were made of this "Buckskin" or " Rawhide "hardwood used as siding and/or panneling. Probably in some old Antique tables in Stephewnville, Dublin, and Brownwood and San Angelo. as local cabinetmakers bought local lumber and made furniture to order. Last of that line in Erath County was "Hub" Willis of Stephenville who made grandmother Wyly's cabinets for Selden home. he also used local hardwood in 1930's to make oak and Bois-D-Arc parts for wagon wheels which needed repair. Now we order such by catalog or stock number. .............................................. 5 Elizabeth Tuggle 1803 - 1890 .................................................... +John Beasley Hatchett 1794 - 1847 .......................................................... 6 Dr & Rev. William Pinckney Hatchett 1823 - 1905- Volunter Ranger guide for Taylor's Army in Mexico. & organized 17 Churches, Gonzales to Valley Mills to Erath County, sometimes shareing the pulpit with "Choctaw Bill" Robinson and others- and was in a group which organized a Central Texas Baptist Association before there was a Texas Baptist Organization statewide. ................................................................ +Angeli na Isabella Stevens 1829 - 1891 ...................................................................... 7 Ella Attalissa or Attasia Hatchett 1851 - 1901 ......................................................................... ... +Robert Augustine Wyly 1847 - 1938 ......................................................................... ......... 8 Henry Augustine Wyly 1876 - 1956 ......................................................................... ............... +Ida Catherine (Kathryn) Moxley 1876 - 1961 ......................................................................... ..................... 9 Eddie Augustine Wyly 1902 - 1987 ......................................................................... ........................... +Emma Irene Carey 1901 - 1993 ......................................................................... ................................. 10 Charles Augustine Wyly 1929 - ......................................................................... ....................................... +Willie Jean (Jeannie ) Riley 1936 - ( We have 4 grandchildremn and through our daughter's second marriage, we are suddenly Great Great grndparents. It goes with the territory. There are also Lees and hatchetts in Chalk Mountain Plainview, and /or Odom Chapel Cemetery. Take care, Charles A. Wyly .
> this is either the Miller families who lived on the Miller Hill past > Elvis Riggs towards Pony creek or on the old Selden- Hico road in the > Millerville Community, roughly between Salem ( Little Duffau Area) and > Hico, or between Clairette and Duffau. Hi Charles... I don't really think that's my group of Millers but on some of these older families, it's hard to say for sure. The Kitty Miller Richey I've been working on, lived and was buried in the Hazeldell community ...in Comanche county but not far from the Hamilton and Erath county lines. I know some of the Richey's living (or that lived) in Hamilton county are part of my family but have no information that suggested they lived here in the "Selden" area. I have very little on the Miller family ...I've haven't put much time into researching that line of my family ...yet. Thanks, Kathy
Randy I have 1900 for Thomas J. but not Thomas I. Would appreciate having it if not too much trouble. I know that there are alot of Census records now available but I do not see well enough to read microfilm or the Census that are copied directly from the Census. So, I do thank you. You may contact me direct at amronlee3Cox.net. Again, thank you., I enjoy Charles Wyly and his knowledge so much. Norma Norma
