Alice Moore, My relative was Cos Turnbow who married my great-Aunt Clara Whisenant in the Dublin - Purvis area. Would you please send me a picture by e-mail of the cabin before it was dismantled? I would be very appreciative. It would add a lot to my genealogy records. If I can fill in any information for you, I would be very glad to do so. I am a little late reading this message but I have Whisenant relatives buried in the Barbee Cemetery. Since they have a prominent section in that cemetery, I have sure that they knew the Barbees. Do you know about this cemetery? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 8:29 PM Subject: [ERATH] Albritton First, this is definitely the most endearing, entertaining and informative of all the mail lists (and there are many) in which I partake. Second, to those of you I've not had the pleasure of meetingâ?"â?"greetings. I am Dana Stripling, granddaughter to Melvin Durward Barbee, of the Barbee and Looney lines in Erath County. The lil' Jones-Barbee cabin which was moved into downtown Dublin belonged to my ancestors. Third, from a completely different side of the family, some of my Louisiana/Georgia/North Carolina family ended up in Dublin and Stephenville. specifically, my great, great, great Aunt, Harriet Louisa ALBRITTON, and Terrell BRYAN married in Bienville Parish, LA on 20 Feb 1855. They were in Erath County for a while after their marriage. Harriet and Terrell lived in Stephenville, and their son, Redic Bryan, moved to Dublin around 1898 or 1899. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this line? Fourth, ironically, before we even knew of Harriet's existence (a product of some GenForum diggins), my grandmother, Laura Irene ALBRITTON, met and married Durward in the very, very small town of Campti Louisiana. Durward brought her back to Dublin. Odd that both ALBRITTONS would end up back in Erath County. Odder still, I thought -- what was my grandfather (some 20 years old at the time) doing in Campti, of all places, selling mules? He must have had some connection to Louisiana. and, indeed, in the Parish in which Campti is placed and surrounding areas, i have found many a BARBEE in the cemeteries and records. but i have not yet made the connection. but, it certainly seems in all this research, particularly back in the early and mid 1800s -- family followed family. that there is generally some familial connection whenever a relative packed up and moved or visited somewhere else. does anyone have any information that might link NW Louisiana to Dublin and Stephenville? Many thanks for your indulgence in my rambling. Keep the wonderful tales coming. Best regards. I am glad I could help. There is also an Upper Greens Creek Cemetery. My g aunt died in Harbin in 1913 and she is buried in Upper Greens Creek. I have not had the pleasure of visiting this cemetery so I can't tell you anything about it. And I do not find a listing. But it is a possibility. Good luck. Hi, David, the Indonesian Volcano is listed as Krakatoa, which some claim they could hear it but had to read newspapers to realize what the low rumble was. This is from Dan Young's Historical calendars and the calendars have an exhaustive bibliography on the back fly leaf. I think I mispelled it first time. At any rate, this dust and ash circled the earth in jet streams 3 and 1/2 years. The Eruption in 1883 threw solid debris from Indonia to Madagascar. Stage drivers in Central Texas reported same npoise in Stephenville as in many Texas towns when Krakatoa erupted. Some claim this caused crop failures from 1884-1887 in Southern United States which started the economic Depression- Panic of 1893 (Or was it 1887?)Seems , in my memory of the related facts that the 1887 panic was the start of a downhill Depression slide , ending in 1893. This is in College history books and Encyclopedias . This panic caused a lot of banks to fail and farmers to loose land. Naturally, Democrats and Republicans blamed it on each other, . Sometimes Politicians do not realize Mother Nature has the last say, in spite of their efforts, not always because of them. Take care, Charles A. CR, I don't recognize any of your names, sorry. However, my grandparents lived in that area and my grandmother died in 1895 and was buried at Huckaby. They were Jacob and Sarah Elizabeth McElroy. If you come across their name as being neighbors or on land deeds, etc. please let me know. We now know that Wm's parents was George W Shipman and Matilda Brown.Roy Shipman has George listed as the som of Daniel Shipman and Zilpha Macon which is from her line. But all the proof I have seen was a census report from the early 1800's.So that is wgere we are on my Shipman line. Hi, Mom had Jones cousins in Huckaby, releated to Stone, Carey, Copeland, Hipp, and/or Ramage, all from Arkansas. Small World. So far no Akbars, but would not be a great shock . Also, Roy Shipman lived between Chalk Mountainand Walnut Springs, near Charles Pettit's Flat Top (Mountain) Ranch I was also in the Army, 1950-52 with a giant young man named Mullins from Central Texas. charles Wyly, On Sun, 11 May 2003 20:36:47 -0700 [email protected] writes: > Jean, > > Is your Jones descendants from Mason Grigsby Jones of the Erath Co?. > If so > please contact me. > > Thank you. > Michaellann Shipman Mullins > > > > > ==== TXERATH Mailing List ==== > --- Author Retains Copyright --- > -- Copyright 2003 Author -- All Rights Reserved > Post to List: [email protected] http://www.selfroots.com > Unsubscribe request To: [email protected] > ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > >
Hi, There was a Baptist pastor at Selden, probably bivocational back then, who was named Brother Gillam. He performed the wedding for my grandparents Henry and Ida Kathryn Moxley Wyly, appx. 1900, then for my parents, Eddie and Emma Carey Wyly about 1925 or 1926. He had a habit of having Sunday dinner with a family when a wedding was planned, then carefully "lost" a silver dollar there. That night at Church he would announce that he lost a Silver dollar with certain date and marking and would perform a wedding for anyone who found it. Naturally, Mom had "found " it. Br. Gilliam's grandson was Ben Jack Cage of Cage and Crow and Trammell banking families. Ben Wyly, Jr. age 17 had deliverred 3000 head of Sheep from Atlanta, Georgia to to San Angelo appx. 1890, age 17- Engilsh Sheep from Atlanta, Ga. to San Angelo, for ranges toward Balmoreah. These sheep were deliverred to Trammel and Crow of San Angelo and Stephenville. part payment was in a Selden, Texas Ranch, a store on Stephenville Square, and some Stephenville homes owned by Trammel or Crow families. My sister in law Leota Narrell or Norrill of Van, Texas now and Born in Ropesville, Texs said her grandad was also a Br. Gilliam or Gillum. About 5 years ago they held their Gillum Reunion in the Fort Worth Sportsman Club area at Thurber. One year this family met at Lake Cisco or Ranger. You mentioned the Hills. Some Hills lived in Itasca- another family in Walnut Springs, Texas and one had a farm in Chalk Mountain. He married a Hale if I remember right. He used to combine dad's Vetch and Wheat mix with a very old Regular Farmall and Allis Chalmers Combine. I attend church with a John Hill , a Gideon, formerly from Louisiana. Also, there used to be a Mr. Boggus in 1940-50's who had a small farm or large garden, usually wore Blue overalls, and drove a wagon with 2 Mules hauling a Walking plow to plow gardens for Stephenville City dwellers. Contact Tarleton State University in person or by computer. They are building a Thurber Museum. Have also bought a University in Killeen which carries Tarleton name, and McClennan Community College and Texas \State Technical College in Waco both have Tarleton teachers on campus to complete B.S. Degrees without leaving Waco. You can now finish Tarleton or Univ. of Texas in Waco without the expense of Baylor. Hill College , Hillsboro, has had a Cleburne Campus for several years. Why don't some of us get together and each write a chapter on our Thurber memories, personal and family hearsay? I know Morings, Wylys, and Tacketts all worked at Thurber at one time or another. Take care, Charles A.
