Hi, not sure aboiut the conmnections but one Slaughter ran the Slaughter (Rexall?) Drug store on the square in Stephenville, 1930's. George Slaughter, descendant of Col. C.C. Slaughter, married Janice Wyly, daughter of Ben Wyly , who sold his business interests in 1880's and came to Stephenville about 1890 and ran a store and sold the Rawhide (hardwood_ lumber his son in law or nephew , cut in Dublin before moving to west of San Angelo. One still operates there. Col. Slaughter's statue on his horse is near the Buckner's Orphan Home in Dqallas. One source says that George and Janice were married in Fort Worth and moved to the Slaughter Ranch land around Lubbock, Levelland, Plainview and west into New Mexico. Janice and son Donaho Wyly Slaughter came to a Stephenville Wyly Reunion appx. 1990. Some of her kin from Tyler, came also. The family has donated a Line shack with a dugout center below ground level for winter, a Windmill, and other buildings to the Texas Tech Ranch Heritagre Museum in Lubbock. It is surrounded by a tall dirt Brem next to the Buddy Holly Museum. My Wife's dad and mom bought some of the Slaughter Ranch about 1920, windmill and later found an underground stream which would pump a full 10" pipe for irrigation, near Pettit, Texas. The Whiteface Farms were once part of the Slaughter Ranch The Ranch home and several acres are left as it was in 1900 , facing the Lubbock Highway. George and janice lived in Roswell many years. Don closed his Albequerque law office and focuses on Roswell and Hockley County and other nearby interests. Once again, I do not know the connections of all of the above Sl;aughters, but they left tracks in Texas and New Mexico. The Slaughter I have taught with in Waco is of African American background. I have a SLAUGHTER in my database. His name was Hyram B Slaughter, born April 27, 1903, in Callahan Co., TX. He died March 16, 1997, in Breckenridge, Stephens Co., TX. He married Ruth Mae HARRISON about 1920-1922 and their daughter was named Constance Jean Slaughter, born April 21, 1933. Also, I would like to know more about your CARTERs. I have an Oscar Wilde Carter, born Stephenville, Erath Co., TX, in 1888. He married my mother's sister, Berlin MCKINNEY. He died in Breckenridge in 1975. ----- Original Message ----- From: "R Wolff" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 12:44 PM Subject: [ERATH] Slaughter, Thurber City 1900 > HIP HIP > HARRAH! > > > I found my grandfather in the 1900 CENSUS RECORDS !!! Sandra, Sorry, I do not have a contact. Jerry
I am not a contact for the cemetery, but have several family members buried there including a greatgrandfather and mother. The history of the cemetery is that the Baptist and the Methodist couldn't agree to use the same cemetery due to the Upper Greens Creek Cemetery is located on Baptist property; so the Methodist established the Lower Greens Creek Cemetery for Methodist. My great-great grandparents Rufus and Ann Green Birdsell moved to Daffau, Erath County about 1859. Rufus donated a acre of land for a school and was known for a long time as the Birdsell school house. He died there 1 Sept 1883 and is buried in the Cemetery that was beside the School House. I think the Cemetery may now be known as Millerville Cemetery. Rufus was a farmer and a stockraiser. Several children was born to Rufus and Ann. There are two daughters that I have nothing on but their birth years and marriage records. I thought maybe someone on the list may have some info on them or their spouses. The daughters were, Lucinda born about 1864 married C.H. Wright, Martha A. born about 1867 married J. Barnett. Is anyone research the Wright or Barnett family? Mell

Are you having trouble finding graves in Central Texas area? Waco Tribune- Herald May 25, 2003, page 1B has an interesting article on the 22 Cemeteries on the Army Base. Google.Com should be able to find it for you on the Internet at Wacotrib.com 4 can be visited only on Memorial Day- Bethel , Ruth, Friendship and Hubbard (Not in Hill county) .Cemeteries are open to visitors only on Memorial Day. Most date back to late 1800's. Some are near county or State roads and can be visited throught the year by checking with Fort Hood officials. Some, near Highways are more easily accessble. Military units have undertaken care of these cemeteries at least twice a year, like our "Adopt a Highway" state program. Spouses of those buried there can make special arrangements to be buried by their spouse. Cheryl Huckerby is Fort Hood Staff Archeologist in charge the Fort HoodCultural Resources Management Program of the 2,200 Archeological sites on Fort Hood dating back 9,000 years. Communities no longer in existence include harmony, Turnover, Schly, and Owl Creek. The cemeteries are on detailed maps and soldiers in training take pride in preserving them. Plans once included taking in land to Valley Mills, but this was never completed. Locals , some being drafted, sold land at less than market value and waited for the Federal money over a year. Leased land for maneuvers was restored, terraced, and re- fenced. Some of the Fort land has cattle on it- they are sometimes in danger of Artilery fire- but owners are notified if they want to move them. Take Care, Charles A. Wyly
Lower Green Creek Cem. is on 377 just a little West of the turn off to Green Creek Church. My book says it is 4 miles N.E. of Dublin South side of 377. It is small and well kept. Jerry
Is there someone who lives in Erath County who can help me find the Lower Green Creek Cemetery, which should be near Harbin, or south of Stephenville. Yesterday we found the Upper Green Creek Cemetery, but not the Lower Cemetery. Are they the same? About 8-10 miles south of Stephenville on Hwy 377, we saw a sign to Green Creek Baptist Church to the right or west of 377. We followed that road which deadends at the church. The Upper Green Creek Cemetery is to the left. Where is the Lower Green Creek Cemetery? Thanks for your help, Sandra Van Wyk
Hi, Nancy Beinholm- , Straighten me out on the Womacks. They are listed as Scotch- Irish immigrants in 1600- early 1700's. Yet the ones dad taught in Bosque County I thought were of German or Norwegian origin. Dad said the entire first Grade in Harmony School near Meridian spoke Norwegian, including a Womak or Womack . and between Clifton and Whitney is Womack Church and hall. I thought they were Lutheran. One of them married a distant Hatchett Cousin of mine in Boisque County and best I remember they are buried in Indian Creek Cemetery, Erath County. I have several Womacks in the Hatchett Family Tree- . Weren't some involved in Texas Revolution but the Norwegians had not found the Bosque Valley and prairie between it and the Brazos. Will apreciate any input on this. Charles A. Wyly
Charles: Loved your story about your experiences in the Bosque Flood of 1952. Sounds like you were a lucky guy. We must have had "weather" all over about that time. I'm from the San Joaquin Valley in CA and our farm bordered the Tule River for a quarter of a mile. When I was about 8 or 9 we had "the flood" and all the top soil was washed off our place. Dad has spent several years leveling the two farms he had bought for CASH in early 1940s. I remember he pulled out a roll of bills from his pocket and paid one owner for his property. Dad grew up during the depression and never charged anything in his life. Paid cash for cars, tractors, etc. He worked for a trucking firm days and farmed other hours - when I don't know. He was paid 50 cents a day. After losing several years work putting marginal land into production by himself, he had to get our place back together. We had a caterpillar tractor that Dad drove into one of the washed out holes back of the barn and he stood on the top of it while Mom took a picture. You could only see the top of the exhaust pipe and Dad from about the knees up. Fortunately our old house was built on a high point and we were never in danger of washing away as you were. I can't recall what happened to the livestock - cows, a couple of horses, chickens, etc. Even though it was the late 40s for this flood, we still had an outhouse and I remember wading out to it during the flood - yuk! Not too many years later, the Army Corps of Engineers built a dam in mountains east of home. Only had one more time of high water when we did have monsoon rains and they had to open the floodgates and let the water down which did overflow the banks of the Tule in a few places or the dam would have washed out. Water was already going around the sides of the dam at the time. As you can see, your "flood" story brought back memories of high waters, but your story tops mine. Enjoyed reading it. Mom's brother Emmett Carey had an auto repair shop next to Mr. Boggus - s home. I was attending Tarleton and lived in a Garage apartment in Mr. Bogguse's home place. The Garage went over at an angle when Water heater blew up and got my attention. A pecan tree held the tilted apartment and kept me from waking up in Hico or a fence in that direction. Ansil kept several Milk trucks and other farm equipment running with used parts after he left the Army. Can't remember his brother's name. Ansil's dad was elderly and limped, but ran a wrecking and used parts yard at Hwy 67 and 281 Bypass, across from present County Jail and Sheriff's office. He made a lot of money there during WW2 when new parts went to the Military, 1941-46. He used his pocket for his office when not in his shop office and made change on the spot. he showed you the vehicle and sometimes you removed it. I used some of his parts to repair farm vehicles and autos while working part time in Uncle Emmett's shop. Only other parts came from Mexico- "Bootleg". Stephenville Fire Dept. stood on hill by Earl Singleton's Electronics repair shop and watched, then carried me to Stephenville Hospital for cold water exposure. There was hail and cattle coming down the Bosque. Somelive cattle were pulled out near Hico. Some got caught in fences and undertow. Two other young married men were brought to my ward at Hospital. Knee Deep water stalled their Milk Truck and they hung to a tarp, nailed to the bed, and sat in the cold water on the truck cab2 or 3 hours before someone saw them in a flash of lightning and gotthem out some way- a National Guard truck was used some. Hello Charles Wylie, I wanted to ask you if you knew the Carter family in Erath Co., TX. My Aunt Berlin McKinney, married Oscar Wilde Carter, September 30, 1919, in Stephenville, TX. Uncle Oscar was born December 5, 1888, in Stephenville. Aunt Berlin was born in Palo Pinto Co., TX. A Carter researcher sent me information that the parents of Uncle Oscar were William A Carter and Lillie E White. That's all the information I have on his background. Two girls were born to Aunt Berlin and Uncle Oscar: Evelyn Florene, born July 7, 1920, in Mingus, TX; and Vivian, born May 10, 1923, also in Mingus. This week I received a copy of the 1920 census for the Carters in Erath Co., Part of Prec # 7. ( where was that located?) It shows Oscar as male, white, 30. Refused to give place of birth & Dad's place of birth, mother, born TN.; Also, Berlin, female, white, 17, born TX . Father born TN, and mother, born GA. I have in my family records that Aunt Berlin was born 1900, so she should be 18, census taken in Feb, 1920. It gave his occupation as stable hand for T P Cosa Co (sp?) I'm wondering if that could be T P Coal? I would appreciate hearing from you concerning this family. The only thing I remember hearing about Uncle Oscar as a young man, was he went to Washington state and also Oregon for a time before he married. I remember him telling me how pretty it was up there. Also, he and Aunt Berlin were very musical. She played the piano wonderfully well and he played the violin. They were so good to me and incouraged me with my piano playing and allowed me to play with them. That was a real treat. My family had mucicals at home and several would be playing. I tried to write you off the list and I no longer have your correct e-mail address. Will appreciate help with this family. Dortha McElroy Greenlee

--------- Forwarded message ---------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Wed, 21 May 2003 22:15:12 EDT Subject: [Sc-Ir] Dr. JB Cowan and his 95 year old Grandson Hello folks, Just when you think there is nothing more to look for in a particular area of genealogy you get an e-mail. This one came from cousin Dan and he told me he had a manuscript sent to him by a lady in Washington concerning a cadet James G. Cowan who was a student at the University of Alabama during the last days of the Confederacy. I immediately contacted the woman and she sent me a copy of this wonderful manuscript which has never been published. It begins as follows: To my loyal, faithful, devoted and beloved wife, who for forty five years, on each recurring anniversary, has patiently endured the affliction of having some of the incidents here related repeated. This narrative is affectionately dedicated. Jas. G.(Gillespie) Cowan This is a most remarkable story and includes the likes of Dr. James B. Cowan, the Reverend Samuel Montgomery Cowan and his wife and the Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. It reads like one of Dr. Cowan's letters and it is of historical significance. I was asked not to distribute the narrative as it was intended for family and I will respect that wish. But it gets better. Dan also told me something else which when I first heard it I thought he was mistaken or pulling my leg. He said he was in contact with a fellow in Nashville who works at the Tennessee State archives by the name of Jim Havron and that this fellow was a descendant of Dr. JB Cowan, Chief Surgeon to General Forrest. I was much eleated at the prospect of finding one of Dr. Cowan's relatives, especially considering the fact he is an archiveist and just might know really good stuff on the family. I called him on the phone and we had a nice talk and it looks like a trip to Tennessee is about ready to happen. Some of you may remember my posts regarding Dr. Cowan's letters of 1895 to a distant relative discussing the family genealogy and saying Samuel Cowan's father came from Londonderry. You may also remember the research trip John Giacoletti and I made to PRONI and the resulting discovery of a letter written by Robert Cowan in 1733 saying the family removed to Londonderry in the 1620's and that they originally were from Stirling, almost a word for word confirmation of Dr.Cowan's writings 170+ years later. Well guess what? Dr Cowan's grandson is STILL living!! He is 95 years old and lives near Tullahoma. Jim Havron is this gentlemans grandson! Jim says the old man has many letters and even the Reverend Samuel M. Cowan's Bible and who knows what else in his old lock box. I once made the statement that given the choice of being lucky or smart in genealogy always take luck. I hereby stick by that statement. Good fortune continues and I wait eagerly for the time when I can visit my new cousin in Nashville, Mr. Jim Havron, and exchange information with him and swap stories about Ireland, Scotland, the War and and the entire cast of characters that make up who we are. I want to sit on the front porch on a warm summer evening and toast the best Chief Surgeon who ever lived, Dr. James Benjamin Cowan, a man who worked for the best cavalry officer in the history of warfare, Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest. I want to live, if just for a moment, like they lived. Regards, Robert Cowan "I rode with Forrest" "I rowed with Knox"
Hi: Couldn't help but respond to your posting. I'm a descendant of Howards/Rogers/Womacks who were in Erath Co. early on and in Nacogdoches, Smith, and McLennan Counties even before that before Erath Co. was formed. Other family connections with our line are Barbees, Whites, Stephens, Straceners, and more. I have found that lots of our extended family are buried in the Barbee Cemetery. In particular, the children of my gr. gr. grandfather, John H. Howard, and wife Sarah G. Burleson, who were in early Erath Co. Children were Emily Ann Howard was the wife of Rufus Bean White, Mary Caroline Howard was the wife of Wm. F. Stephen, Nancy Elizabeth Howard was the wife of James Carroll Rogers, Harriett Matilda Howard was the wife of Wm. Henry Stracener, and their brother was Leander Guy Howard who lived and died in Erath Co., TX. He was a Texas Ranger during his time there. Nancy Elizabeth Howard/James Carroll Rogers (my gr. grandparents) were married in Stephenville as were my grandparents, Thomas Pitts Rogers and Florence Virginia Womack. I even inherited some communications with NaHomer Stephen from the 1960s from his research and articles he wrote for the local newspaper. He must have been a character. While born/raised in CA, after doing lots of TX research, I feel very connected to family history there. The above names are on my mom's side, but wouldn't you know it? Dad's family came through TX too and I am now digging for those roots. Since they have a prominent section in that cemetery, I have sure that they knew the Barbees. Do you know about this cemetery? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 8:29 PM Subject: [ERATH] Albritton First, this is definitely the most endearing, entertaining and informative of all the mail lists (and there are many) in which I partake. Second, to those of you I've not had the pleasure of meetingâ?"â?"greetings. I am Dana Stripling, granddaughter to Melvin Durward Barbee, of the Barbee and Looney lines in Erath County. The lil' Jones-Barbee cabin which was moved into downtown Dublin belonged to my ancestors. Third, from a completely different side of the family, some of my Louisiana/Georgia/North Carolina family ended up in Dublin and Stephenville. specifically, my great, great, great Aunt, Harriet Louisa ALBRITTON, and Terrell BRYAN married in Bienville Parish, LA on 20 Feb 1855. They were in Erath County for a while after their marriage. Harriet and Terrell lived in Stephenville, and their son, Redic Bryan, moved to Dublin around 1898 or 1899. I was wondering if anyone had any information on this line? Fourth, ironically, before we even knew of Harriet's existence (a product of some GenForum diggins), my grandmother, Laura Irene ALBRITTON, met and married Durward in the very, very small town of Campti Louisiana. Durward brought her back to Dublin. Odd that both ALBRITTONS would end up back in Erath County. Odder still, I thought -- what was my grandfather (some 20 years old at the time) doing in Campti, of all places, selling mules? He must have had some connection to Louisiana. and, indeed, in the Parish in which Campti is placed and surrounding areas, i have found many a BARBEE in the cemeteries and records. but i have not yet made the connection. but, it certainly seems in all this research, particularly back in the early and mid 1800s -- family followed family. that there is generally some familial connection whenever a relative packed up and moved or visited somewhere else. does anyone have any information that might link NW Louisiana to Dublin and Stephenville? Many thanks for your indulgence in my rambling. Keep the wonderful tales coming. Best regards.
