Hi, Check this site out for the Scottish meaning of Redneck, Cracker, Gringo , and Hillbilly Several opinions on Red Neck- it has become Coloquial and does not mean the same in all Areas, even in the South. Gringo came from American Soldiers marching into Mexico, 184548 from Texas t singing te old Scottish Song " Green Grow the Laurel ,All Coverred with Dew ( How sad 's been tne Day since I parted from You)" Charles Wyly --------- Forwarded message ---------- From: "John Erwin" <[email protected]> Subject: [Sc-Ir] Redneck, the true story Ok everybody click on this web site for the story about Rednecks. http://www.scotshistoryonline.co.uk/rednecks/rednecks.html John Erwin
Thanks, Cindy, Garvin Wood married dad's first cousin, Olive Wyly. She was raised in the old house built by Great Granndad Robert Wyly's brother William Sevier Wyly and wife Mary Hatchett Wyly Her mom died during the Depression and her Dad Oliver Wyly #3 or 4 . he was a working man and had small children. Her baby sister Louise was raised by "Aunt Myrt" Wyly Hatchett and Uncle Will Hatchett. Two of the girls were raised by Agnes Hatchett Wyly and their Uncle Charlie Wyly. Myrt, Bill, Robert, Charlie, and Nora Estelle Kay, wife of Hensley David and Ida Minerva Wyly Kay , wife of John Kay were some of the 23 siblings of Oliver Cromwell Wyly and first wife Lucy Eddins, second wife Martha Adeline Byrd, and 3rd wife Martha Catherine Mitchell, who was a niece of Lucy Eddins with a double first cousin there somewhere. O.C. Sr. was a sheriff of Habersham county, Ga. and a Civil War officer. One son and brother had a 4 story Wholesale Grocery in Atrlanta and some claim that some Civil War records were in the 4th story storage when Sherman tried to burn Atlanta. 12 of O.C. Wyly's children moved to Selden , Texas 1865-1890 Nova Schouten could tell you much more about her mom and dad. Olive and Garvin. Kevin Woods's children are the 5 the generation to live in the"Uncle" Bill Wyly Home by the Hoelscher Dairy. Dorothy Scrimsher's Hurley grandad Hurley used to stop with her at Great Uncle Bill's home coming from the Stone Family Gin at Selden ( Garrett Springs) , he would let the horses rest while he and Great Uncle Bill would sit and rock and drink cool cistern water and discuss the Bible. Dorothy and Garvin live in the home nearest Selden Gin and the Garrett Springs. Dorothy Scrimsher attended Selden High the 2 years after I left Johnsville for Selden., then 2 years at Stephenville. her brother Jerry married Louise Wyly, who passed on last week in a Glen Rose home for Altzheimer's . Jerry was sheriff of Throckmorton and cotton ginner there and at Selden at one time or another. Dorothy and Jerry's mom was a Darnell- one of the older generations of Darnells married Grandmother Ida Moxley Wyly's sister Sallie Moxley and one of her sisters married a son of Tom Arendell, who built the Log Cabin on what is now Moncrief Dairy, and Garvin Wood completely restored Tom's Cabin , dirt floor and all. At one time I must have been cousin to half the kids in Selden School - seemed like it. I am sure this more than you ever wanted to know about these connections. I did not know Louise was buried last week until one of Lucille Wyly's progeny notified me this week. Thanks, Charles Wyly " Insanity is hereditary- you get it from your kids. "
I must have missed the beginning of this thread ... Dorothy and Garvin are living and would be happy to visit with folks interested in their families. Dorothy serves on the Erath County Historical Commission. They were both on hand for a retirement party I attended last week. I have forgotten which community they live at - either Duffau or Selden? - but I'm sure they have a number in the phone book. ----- Original Message ----- From: "HaynesO'Neil" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 12:27 PM Subject: [ERATH] Scrimscher > I have Dorothy Scrimscher. Thanks, Haynes- I still remember Boone Brownand his big cigars when I was in SHS and Marclene Brown was a classmate. I am 74- did not know Boone was still living- may be. If so, he is past 90. Concerning the 'Blach Irish"- some called themselves "Dark Dutch". If the names had a meaning in Irelend or the Netherlands, it was different than the meaning early settlers had . The meaning varied in Georgia. Concerning the area you speak of, we attended a Sevier Family Reunion in Gatlainburg and came due south to Cherokee, N.C. to Hiawasse to Alpine Helen to Clarkesville and Toccoa, then to Atlanta. Ga. Militia Gen(1812 ) & Great Grandad's Grandad james Rutherford Wyly is buried there in Clarkesville in old Cemetery downtown by the Episcopal Church which J.R. and his Clevelands first cousins built for Charleston Tourists who summered in Clarkesville and Alpine Helen. He built 2 or 3 Misionary Baptist and 1 Episcopal church and insisted they all have a balcony for all people, Slave, free, indentured, Indian, or whatever to share the worship without having to be a guest of someone who owned their family pew. Gen Ben Cleveland, is buried near him as is Sarah Hawkins Clark Wyly, granddaughter of Governor John Sevier and Sarah Hawkins. The Inn was sold to Wylys by Walton's son in law Gen. Joseph Martin- part Cherokee who was also married to Betsy Ward, dau. of Beloved Woman of Cherokee Old Echota, Nancy Ward. agent Gen . Martin also had 2 to 4 Cherokee Wives & 2 Anglo- Susannah Graves at one time or another. Sister Mary Graves is on my tree. Descendants include Grandad's cousins in Tahlequah Cherokee Government- one printed the Cherokee Phoenix in Sequoya's alphabet. Grandad had no Cherokee blood. The Tahlequah group included first Attorney Gen. of Western nation, a few lawyers, an FBI agent under Hoover, and a dr. or 2. This came through Buffington- McNair- Bushyhead- and related lines. He had just cleared the Tugaloo Turnpike from Tellico Plains to Toccoa, Ga. He and Sarah ran the Traveller's Rest inn in Toccoa, bought from Cherokee leased land by Jesse Walton when jesse left for Georgia Gold Fields. Some credit the Ga. Gold Fields and the Cherokee tollerance of Polygamy near Old Echota for Andrew Jackson's removal of some soldiers and officers of Old Echota who fought with him in War of 1812 were put on Trail of Tears. Wylym and Cleveland , with 700 Anglos and 400 Cherokees fought British and agitated Seminoles in Florida, 1812 See Ga. Dept of Natural Resources on Internet then go to Traveller's Rest Inn. Wylys sold it to Jarrett- Lucas families - third family ownership until Ga. made it into a State Park- and Clemson U. craftsmen hold pioneer skills classes there on weekends. J.r. and sons sold their habersham Couty Iron Works- forge and foundry, to Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, now apparently under Lake hartwell. Take care, Charles A. Wyly
Charles, you bring up an interesting connection. I have only one Bateman in my database.......a second great-grand uncle who married Mary Ann See. They came from The Cove, Meriwether County, GA. Henry was born about 1830 and died during the Cival War and is buried in the See Cemetery, The Cove, Meriwether County, GA. I know nothing of his family, but there is an excellent genealogy group in Meriwether with a lot of old history. Mary Ann See Bateman's sister was Barbara Virginia See, my paternal ggreat-grandmother. Barbara married James J. Brown in Meriwether and they and their children later moved to Erath County. This was Boone Brown's ancestral family: Mac Henry, Napolian J., Claudia Lee, William Serene, Molly, Alva L., and O. Bun. . Could it be possible that some of the Bateman's that your related to also came from the same area along with the Browns? The Browns probably arrived in Erath in the 1880's. The other interesting connection here is the Indian one. This is the side of my family that my Cherokee blood came from Barbara Virginia See Brown's daughter, my great-grandmother was supposedly half Cherokee. Her mother, Claudia Lee, looks full blooded Indian in her picture. Meriwether County GA is in the northwestern part of the state, and was immediatly south of Cherokee Territory prior to the Trail of Tears. I suspect there was a lot of inter-marrying with Cherokees and also Creeks who lived in that area, and that this was lied about and hidden due to the forced deportation of all Indians from the area. Many who had married anglos would state they were "Black Irish" instead of admitting they were Indian to keep from being deported. Because of this, and because the Indian Rolls you refer to only have those who went along with the deportation to OK, many of our Indian ancestors will never be able to be proven....unless they come up with a DNA test that connects us sometime in the future. With the evidence I have, I was able to join the Cherokees of California, but it is not a federally recognized tribe. So, with the Bateman/Brown Meriwether/Erath connections and the Indian history from the same ones, I suspect there may be a real connection here. I would be interested in hearing what you think. Also, I have no current connection to the Browns. They have seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Some are burried in Lingleville. The rest, except for Boone, must have moved away from Erath. Anyway, thought you might find this interesting and possibly even a good lead on your Batemans. Hi, and thanks, Haynes. One other name we have tried to connect was Bateman- must be dozens of them from Erath County to Waco on the Bosque River. I am a James T. Stone- Sarah Bateman descendant. One of the 23 children of Oliver Cromwell Wyly the first, was Eugene Wyly who married a Loudelia Bateman- some records say Graham-others say Stephenville area. All agree they lived at Stephenville and he gained a Railroad position while in Stephenville and all promotions meant moving west to California. Son Be, S. Wyly and siblings and nieces and nephews from California and Arizona and Oklahoima, mostly would visit the Stephenville Wyly Family Reunion. Ben would play his professional type harmonica at Stephenville Country Opry during intermission and was so good, musicians in the Opery would not play with him Garvin Wood and Olive Wyly Wood always made the reunions- she was chairman when they started in Selden School then the American Legion hall. Debbie Shaw of Seminole, Ok. had reason to think that Loudelia Bateman, her grandmother was Cherokee or Choctaw. I have found many Batemans on the Cherokee Rolls of Western Cherokees, but Loudelia nor Sarah neither show up. The Eugene buried at Indian Creek near Dorothy Scrimsher Wood's family was of the Ben Franklin Line. This Ben was one of the 23. Ben is buried at his Comanche County farm. He was Great Grandad Robert Augustine Wyly's half brother- Robert son of O.C. and Lucy Eddins and Eugene son of O.C. and 3rd wife, Martha Catherine Mitchell, the niece of Lucy Eddins. Minnieola Wyly Fulbright is past 90. She said that our Great Uncle Charlie showed her and other Wyly Girls where his Mitchell Uncles and Aunts are buried in Ireland Cemetery, Hamilton County,( This cemetery has a second name- similar th Box- Pony Creek) a few miles from Ben and other Wylys are buried in Comanche County. Both families had Georgia Roots. ANY HELP THERE FROM BATEMAN RESEARCHERS? The only Carey I have in my database is Truet who married Dorothy Scrimsher. I have Dorothy because she married Garvin Wood. The Packs came from TN to MO then to TX and probably didn't do any more than pass through AR enroute. Of course, there are or at least were so many in Erath County that most families in Erath probably have a Pack connection somewhere. Interestingly though, the Pack surname is a small one here in the US as a whole with Erath probably having the largest concentration of them. The Stones are heavily intermarried with the Packs. Claudia Stone married Henry Keister Pack. Cora Eppie Stone married Jake Randolph Pack. Francis Pearl Stone married Edgar Lewis Pack. Lela Clerecy Pack married Henry Keister Pack (second Stone marriage for him). Myrtle Stone married Robert E. Pack. Naoimi Stone married (guess who) Henry Keister Pack (3rd Stone marriage). Has to be an interesting story with old Henry, wish I knew what it was. I don't show any Copeland marriages to Packs, but there could have been some. I do have some Copelands married to my Watson side. I don't have any Cannon's in my database. My Best, Randy Haynes ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles A. I appreciated hearing from and reading your response/replies to my HIP HIP HARAHH missive. I also posted that same message on the SLAUGHTER List, Pope County IL list, and the Illinois Trails lists. I now have additonal sources and other information to assist my SLAUGHTER research. All of your replies and narratives were helpful to my SLAUGHTER research. Thanks for your help. My summation: My grandparents, Will and Sarah, only decided to live in Thurber and raise their children in Thurber was only because grandfather William had found work in Thurber. They would have enjoyed socializing with their neighbors, and would have had family times with the family of Rev John R Slaughter and most certainly the Carter family of Eastland, Eastland TX. Perhaps Grandma Sarah had even kept a correspondece with the people she met or knew while she lived in Thurber City 1894-1900 era. ___ Their children Rufus, Minnie Alice, Myrtle Belle, William Henry, and Pearl Ophelia were born while the *Grands* were in Erath County. An infant child named Ruby was also born - died and buried in Thurber Cemetery. I visited her grave while researching last year. Yes, I did find it! It was a challange though! Their children married out of Bisbee, Cochise County Arizona. All of them, except my dad William Henry Slaughter moved to California, after finding their spouses when they lived in Bisbee/Douglas area of Arizona. They lived and raised their families in San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco CA. All died in their respective cities. While in Arizona: Rufus Burl Slaughter married ATTAWAY Minnie Alice Slaughter married KING married FOSTER, re married KING Myrtle Belle Slaughter married BELL - not known at this time -------- Pearl Ophelia Slaughter married JARBOE & BRITT from KY and CA Wm Henry Slaughter married PAYNE & DAIL from KY and IL That is the family of Sarah and William Slaughter who lived in Thurber Erath TX around 1894 - 1900 Information Sources: Hill county marriage records and 1900 TX census record of Thurber, Erath TX. John Enness Slaughter b Cochise County AZ, married Vigna, from CA . John/Jack Enness completed this family. My dad is the only child born in Thurber, Erath County married in Bisbee, Cochise Arizona and died in Tucson, Pima County AZ 1975. Dads' first marriage was to PAYNE, she of KY. He married my mom DAIL of IL. Bisbee, Cochise County is the site of the famous Copper Queen Mine. Grandfather will worked there as a boiler maker - blacksmith until he retired. Information Source: 1910-20 census records. My only other roots in Erath and Eastland TX connect me to the CARTER wife of Rev J.R. Slaughter She is the sister of my grandmother Sarah Ophelia Carter of MS. I relate to the CARTER and not this Slaughter line. Of course their children would be related to my Slaughter line. I have never met any of them. As a child I never knew any of my dads family. Grandfather William Richard died before I was born. Grandmother Sarah Ophelia Carter-SLAUGHTER died in Sacramento CA when I was 8. All the aunts and uncles lived in CA. I have never been known for brevity, (picture me laughing here.) I do try so hard to condense my postings. Though I'm looking for names, dates of birth, marriage and death of my ancestors I'm also hoping to learn more about their daily lives and loves and strife. Hurrah, for all of our ancestors who stayed the course. Who were these people? I am amazed at the strength of the men and women who plowed, blasted and cultivated their homesteads. I've had my share of love, and loss and hard times. But -- I've never pulled a plowshare, tilled the land, churned butter or made my own soap while carrying a child in my belly. The information I have posted to the lists has had its rewards. Through making my family information known. Online research. And kind generous people like yourselves I located and re-united with those neices and nephews I had never seen/met, though I knew of them. My genealogy quest began with my desire to find those neices/nephews and,to find my sister half-sister Frances. I had a wonderful re-union with the neices/nephew *** and *** Frances earlier this month after losing contact with my family 25 years ago. Frances is 78 and though her memory is fading she knew me and we had a wonderful visit. She lives in an assisted living center, and luckily for me I will be able to visit with her frequently from now on! My "Grands" did raise wonderful children. They in turn left me a wonderful legacy. Each of their children though never wealthy were successful, and each raised their own wonderful families. Finding my half-sister Frances was the primary focus of my research. I didn't start my quest to become a genealogist or the family historian. I've found so much, yet there is so much of my SLAUGHTER heritage left for me to discover. Brevity has its point. Verbosity, in my case has led me further than I dreamed when I started my family search thinking that I only two aunts. I never knew of the 2 uncles and not knowing the names of my "Grands." I started where I was supposed to, close to home. In three years of online research I've found their names, close family ties, clues to my Great-grandfahter John R Slaughter and his wife Nancy and found that my grandfather had a sister named Alice and additional family history of my great-grandmother Nancy C Gossage b 1848 TN ,nee Slaughter nee Williams both of IL. Hurahh for brevity... Hurahh for verbosity. Hurahh for the internet. And the GRAND HURAHH for all of you who post to these lists, and assist others in finding their family background, and - and - and read through missives such as mine. I am so very thankful. HaynesO'Neil, Thank you for writing. I feel these Carters could be related since they are in the same area. However, I dont have enough information on my uncle's family to be able to proe it. I was told that Uncle Oscar's parents were William A Carter and Lillie E White. I have no proof for this. I do have from family sources that Uncle Oscar was born in Stephenville, Erath Co., TX on December 5, 1888. Again, thank you for writing. NHi, my wife's sister married Orval Burnett. he was born in "Slapout", or Howard in Howard County, near BrownwoodThey pronounce it like Burnette instead of the traditional Burnet like the town of Burnet, Texas. Will forward this to some of his children One runs Callahan County Water Supply. One of her brothers runs the World's largest Methane Gas plants in Missouri. For several years after A&M he managed Feed lots- one was near hereford, Texas. The Methane plants may be an answer to our future fuel problems and the Polution problems from Erath and Comanche County dairies into the Bosque and Leon Rivers . where Waco and Tempole and Belton get drinking water. A plant is to be built somewhere near Dublin Temple has drilled 3 or 4 Methane gas wells in an old City dump and give the Methane to Industries for heat proceses to increas the jobs available there. The Howard store was called Slapout because of so many things they were slap out of, when they were asked. One opf the Coffee family grew in the area of this old store and it was posted last year on some E mail I received. Take care, Charles Wyly.
