    2. Charles A. Wyly
    3. Hi, One of my Double First Cousins, Grace Evelyn Wyly Tarpley marrried Melvin Tarpley. One of his siblings married a Leatherman - her Leatherman family and kin lived in Cedar Point- Pony Creek area and used to have family Reunions in Cedar Point. Tarpleys attend church at Cedar Point School/Church house and Brush Arbor. One family of Leathermans attended Pony Creek Church when Tarpleys attended there. Grace used to come to Pony Creek Revivals and play for the "Booster Band" of kids before Bro. Emil Becker and others would hold summer Revivals under the oak grove by the church- it was cooler under the stars , but watch out for swallowing those bugs while singing . Grace and Melvin married when he was leaving for the Navy and they ,with the help of an Army Chaplain , were charter members of a new Baptist Church in San Diego, Calif. , late 1940's, shich is celebrating its 50 th Anniversary this summer.. Pony Creek Baptist.across the prairie branch from the Box Methodist Church, school, Lodge Hall, and community party house ( 1 2 story Building, now gone). . The Box Buildings were gone before my time, but Great Aunt Susie Moxley taught there. I have heard that Pony Creek church was inactive , like Mitchell Creekor several years but is now being rebuilt and opened as a mission of either Cedar Point or Rocky Point Church. Wonder if your Leathermans are involved in that ? Seems that one Burl Perry also married a Leatherman, best I remember. I do not know of a Head Reunion, but ida Head Gristy and Ned Gristy lived a mile or so from us, they lived on Hwy 67 and we used to farm their land after Ned was disabled. The Gristy family, and Tate Ford and Bob Stanley & others played Country music at parties- for listening to musical art - not Dancing in that community. Ned and Ida owned some land- an old Head home, I think,in Evergreen School area. where mr. Snow murderred his wife and step mom and step son , a Connally from Hico and dismemberred them , leaving Bernie Conally's head in a sack in a cellar in the old Crockett School area. The body was buried in the Leatherman pasture in Cedar Point and parts of the others were being burned in a fireplace when Mr. Snow was arrested. This one and the trial filled several editions of Stephenville and Fort Worth Newspapers and national "True Detective" Magazines, who usually had more error than fact. One of the Heads was Superintendent of Alvarado Schools when I was at Venus I.S.D., just down the road. Stephenville and Tarleton trained a lot of teachers and administrators back then. Ida's daughter taught at Seminole, Texas , I think. . Ida and Mom sometimes worked as midwives during the Depression. Take care, Charles A. 1. [ERATH] 911 and Reunion mail addresses. Are you sure you know where you live??? .
    2. Charles A. Wyly
    3. Hi, Our Reunion mailing list has dropped to 350 to under 100 in 10 years. Why? 1. Some have died, been activated to Military or moved to Rest Homes . Names are dropped if mail is returned. If one does not mail by first class, the intended may not have Mail forwarding set up. In the case of 911 Access areas, they may not have moved and/or their forwarding notices may have expired. Only first class will be returned. 2. Before 911 systems are activated, there is a Federal standard of addresses which must be in place so the new system can locate the address to dispatch the emergency vehicles to. Many Erath and adjoining counties are or have just had many addresses changed on their family homes- and if they do not post the change at the Post office and with Reunion Secretaries and all whoi send them mail and magazines, they may never see the mail. This has happened in Morgan Mill- Lipan and areas across the county lines and many other rural areas, where 911 ispatchers may cover many square miles. 3. Some just won't send their addresses to the Reunion officers. 4. In McLennanCounty,Rural Metro ambulance has served 911 area for over 10 years. Now, East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas is taking over and keeping most workers , plus others and adding more stations for faster service. Now the McClennan County ambulances will be dispatched from Tyler Texas office to local standby stations. Someone that far away can't say "Go past the old Selden Store and second road to the rioght past Jones Dairy" - many roads in Erath County have been closed in last 50 years and new ones added in the name of Progress. Now it is 3 times as far from Selden Church to Selden Cemetery as it was in 1940's- and some in these areas which were once in Stephenville mail Routes aren't now. Hico Post Office serves most of Duffau, Chalk Mountain,Johnsville, and much of Selden rural routes. No, your kin didn't move- just have a new address. Now, apply this to those back East who had lived in 3 States but never moved- Boundaries of Tennesee & adjoining were re- surveyed. Much of East Felicianna Parrish in Louisiana used to be in county with Tippah, Miss. Several Erath County trails passed through there in 1800-s , moving west . Also, it is possible to have lived in the same homesite in Central Texas and been in 3 to 5 Counties as new ones organized and bu=oundaries were re- surveyed. Bosque and Johnson Counties join at the Brazos. Above that. Erath and Johnson Countiues joined for a short time before Somervell County was organized and Hood County took some of Erath County north of the Paluxy River, and similar situations with other counties may make you think your family moved a lot when they may not all have moved. Milam County or Old Milam district once stretched from below Waco almost to Wichita Falls. Take care- and is anyone on this site home this summer? or you all out running down your roots and visiting your kids? Take care, Charles A. Wyly

    3. Hi, I have seen little or no Txerath mailings in the last week- slowest I have ever seen it. I will post a short message today. Possibilities: 1. Tarleton Summer school schedule? 2. Family Reunion time- but it's getting late for that. 3. Student summer school and athletic playoffs in Baseball of summer community teams. 3. Harvest time for contract harvesters of Corn & hay for silage for dairymen. Some harvest teams come from New Mex. and Ok. 4. Vacations. 5.Keller Schools start August 1 st- not Sept.1. Many more start August 15 . Teacher planning , workshops, and in some cases moves into new school facilities are taking place here in Waco and Hewitt, where several with Erath County connections teach or work. Midway is setting up Computer access to the library from some classrooms. and opening a new 4 A high school, swiftly becoming a 5 A. 6 Stephenville hosts Texas State 6 man football Coaches workshop and an all Star Game through Tarleton- not sure of exact schedule. 7.It is always Rodeo time, especially now, and Dairymen are running their Misters in the Cooling and holding sheds near the Dairy barns. Also, some livestock and riding events are being held before school starts. 3. Hi, I guess you know that the Scotch- Irish way to abreviate McKindley and others beginning with Mc, when used as the middle name, was to drop the Mc and some of your records may show a Fred K. Miller. In my family this was done by a Harris Mckindley Wyly who signed his name as Harris K. Wyly- another, a merchant on a river in that neighborhood was Christopher McKinley Wyly, who had his likness in his ads in 1800 Newspapers. He signed his name Chris K. Wyly or C.K. Wyly In other words, if you find a Fred K. Miller or F.K. Miller, that is probably your Fred McKinley Miller. And yes, in late 1700's & early 1800's There Wyly- Miller family connections. Now, I wonder if they were connected to the Millerville , Erath County or Miller Hill , also in Erath County. Several Wylys lived near Millerville. It was on the old Dirt road from Stephenville to Hico. Take care, Charles A. Wyly On Tue, 8 Jul 2003 18:20:21 -0700 [email protected] writes: > Hello list: > I have recently subscribed to this list. 2. I don't know where they think his mother is buried. Just said the governor is going to have the body exhumed and check the DNA. Sounds like a wild goose chase to me. They just talked about a man in Texas named Brushy Bill. I kept waiting for them to say the name of Hico, but they never did. Mr. Wyly, you amaze me, you are so full of knowledge. Dorothy

    3. Hi, Where do they think Billy's mother is buried? According to a Book published in Hico, she died in Buffalo Gap, Texas while his dad was - William (?) Roberts- in the Civil War. Little Billy's aunmt came to get him- a Mrs. McCarty. She took him to Oklahoma , where his dad had gone to join Quantrill or Jesse James- when all of these "Knights of The Golden Circle" James Brothers, Daltons and some of Quantrill.s gang were having a summer get together and jesse taught him to ride full speed and shoot under the Horse's neck, Indian style, like Mr Courtney of Eddy , Texas did. some of the james gang ended up in Bell County, Texas. Billy was 12, and his mom re- married a Bonney who moved to new Mexico. Now, It is my understanding that DNA from omo to a son is increasingly inaccurate each generation. If they dig up a lady in New Mexico- she wasn't Billy's mom, but his Aunt- not sure if she was a sibling of his dad or his mom- thought it was his mom. Two little Wyly Girls, first cousins to Great Grandad Robert & his siblings in Erath and Comanche, were with their dad, Augustine Clayton Wyly when he left Atlanta to buy merchandise for the 4 story Wyly family Warehouse and store in Atlanta- Peachtree and Prtyoir. I was contacted by a Bob Jones of Liverpool, England- shipyards" When Liverpool was Dixie." Bob and other retirees have established a trail near Liverpool of at least 40 Confederate Graves. A.C. had 2 dayughtere who died there of Diptheria and he and an Edmiston cousin saw the girls buried. Ben returned from Civil War to find store damaged And A.C. moved to Kansas City. By 1890, Ben Wyly (buried in Comanche) had joined about 10 of his Siblings in Erath County This group of Retirees in Liverplool believe the number of Confederate graves might pass 200, but they have 40 marked. For the grave to have a new official Trail marker they must contact a MALE DESCENDANT OF a. c. wYLY. we FOUND 1- A Mr. Gammon, but the Church leaders did not feel the research was complete for a Church &- civil Consecration- Dedication ceremony and a new marker, so the graves are maintained and have the headstone placed by their dad as the only marker. A.C.'s mom, Sarah Hawkins Clark ( Sevier) Wyly mom was a Georgia Missionary Baptist from an Integrated North Georgia Church. in 1840's . She married J.R Wyly in her Grandad Gov. John Sevier's home in Knoxville, where=she had lived some. . Take care, Charles A. Wyly You can read the details of this in Hill College Confederate Research Center, Hillsboro, Texasa. see peggy Fox. Bob has sent me most of what he sent them . They have A CD Rom that Bob sent them, of " The Wreck of the Dalgonier" and a song or two by his volunteer fund raising band. Seems a Union Ship ailed into Liverpool Harbor and sunk a new Confederate Ship about to be deliverred to the Confederacy- in British Waters, not International waters. The Atlanta store was damaged by Sherman, but still stands, useable.Sherman did not burn the 1840 Jackson, Miss City Hall - it is still used. he knew the papers of the Confederacy at that time- 1865 were in the basement in a Masonic Lodge hall and he refused to burn them. After the Civil War, sherman went home to his own plantation and refused to release his own sslaves, resisting he law with weapons.

    2. Thank you very much. I was raised in Hico area, I remember Brushy Bill walking the streets. If you were watching Aaron Brown on CNN tonight, there a bit piece about Brushy Bill and Billy the Kid. The folks in N Mex are going to dig up Billy the Kids mother for DNA purposes. The N Mex governor wants to prove they have the grave of the real Billy the Kid. I am familiar with some of the things you were talking about, brings back memories. Very interesting, thanks. Dorothy

    2. Dear M. Thank you so much for your reply. You are the only one. I find the Miller's are my brick wall and I am very discouraged. I really got my hopes raised when I found that Fred was born there. I have been searching in Comanche Co for a while since I was told that Fred grew up there. I think Dublin is so near that perhaps people moved back and forth between counties. Freds father initals were J. L. it has been suggested that his name was John Locke and his nick name he went by was IKE J.L. Miller was in Comanche Co TX 11 Jun 1889 for sure because Laura who was born most likely in Comanche the town because her parents were living in town in the 1870 census. She later lived with an Uncle Redmond STONE and another uncle William STONE who had a store in Comanche and later in Proctor on William STONES property in 1880 married 11 Jun 1889 in Comanche and living in Dublin, Erath perhaps as early as 1890 when George Miller her first born was born. 2nd Pearl and 3rd Fred 2 Nov 1896 and last Johnie a daughter b 1899/1900 who married a Johnny D Nelson and moved to Fort Worth where he worked for the railroad. I think he was from Comanche Co. I am giving you more information than you want. Just thank you for responding and trying to help. You are truly generous and kind. Joan [email protected]

    3. Hi, funny how we can read something twice and see references to something we had not thought of first. The first Hico town was on Honey Creek, not the bosque. It moved to be on the Texas Central Railroad from Albany to Dublin to Hico , the Roundhouse and RR shops and hospital in Walnut Springs, then on to Waco. Texas Central sold out to Katy and moved shops to Bellmead- East Waco area, then to McKinney. The city park at Walnut Springs was RR property adjoining the hospital and the Katy Lake, which was built for water to power the steam engines in the shops, round house, and locomotives. The 6 man football field is across Steele Creek from th park,,and the bandstand there had 4 bands- one each Sunday , playing. Thes were RR, High School, Texas Central (RR) College, and a 4 th. Francis Ernest Prideaux Brune, a wealthy Englishman died of drowning while diving from a floating platformduring one of these concerts. His girl friend saw that his grave there is coverred by a single carved slab of Grainte- head to toe. Folk tales say there was a water wheel powered mill on Honey Creek near a low water crossing above a whirlpool in my Grandad's childhood. . One man was crossing after a heavy rain and his horses and wagon were swept into the whirlpool and drowned the horses. When the move to Hico was completed, the Flour mill in Hico ground American Beauty or 4 roses Flour and Corn Meal in my lifetime- in the brick building nearest the old bridge to the City park now I have seen then bagging their products- by then it was not water power, but one of the mechanics there would adapt Buick car engines- straight 8 cylinders- to feed mills, elevators (Grain), and other applications. Until the late 1940's Hico, like Coleman, had their own City Generators for electricity. Today Government sponsored housing covers some of the RR right of way. As teenagers some of us would come to Hico on Saturday night for the 10:30 (Midnight Movie). First we would get a hamburger, where Brushy Bill Roberts AKA Billy the Kid would be drinking coffee, speaking t anyone who passed by, , and daydreaming with a smile on his face. Then we would go see the Diesel powered engines which pulled the Generators for Hico electricity and speak to the night operator, in the block behind the Movie. Once they were rebuilding one, and a skinny person could stand up in the Cylinder with the piston out. Larger engines than the surplus Battleship or Marine engines used at Selden for the Gin . Hico once had an auditorium- before my personal experiences there. Once. the Blue Yodeller Jimmy Rogers rode the RR as a hobo, and got off in Hico with his guitar on his back A concert was planned for him and admission was 25 cents per person. Last use of the RR was hauling Sheetrock from Albany plant to Waco switching yards. The Selden Gin, Church, school, and 4 or 5 houses were powered by a Delco plant operated and owned by the Stone family- but Church, school, homes and Gins rarely used electricity at the same time. Back to Precinct 3- it went to the County line between Iredell and Duffau and Black Stump Valley, and then between Walnut Springs and Chalk Mountain- Flag Branch- Odom Chapel area. The Lodge in Chalk Mountain was upstairs on an old building, but was reset onto a sounder one story foundation . it is the oldest Continually meeting Masonic Lodge in Texas, Clairette may have once been in Precinct 3. Find an old photo from local newspapers of the dedication of the "Longest Bridge in Erath County " , over the Bosque, between Clairette and Hico and I think Precinct 3 Commissioner and State officials are in the photo. Texas has had Gerrymanderred Districts and Precincts all of its history- Not sure why, because back then no one would admit to being anything but a Democrat. Hope this answer the inquiry about Precinct 3. Happy hunting for your Precinct 3 Graves. Charles A. Wyly

    3. I do not know if this will be of any help to you or not, but a large contingent of Miller families and others migrated from Missouri (Maries, Osage, Pulaski counties etc) about 1880 and settled in Commanche, Brown, Haskell and probably Erath counties at that time........ If you will post a query to the [email protected] website, there are a lot of Miller descendents who will respond to queries of Millers of Missouri as well as those in Texas and some of them live in the counties you mentioned in Texas..... they have helped me tremendously. , as my ggrandfather Miller settled in Commanche and gg grandfather Miller in Haskell. counties ....If it indeed turns out that your father is related to the Millers in Maries Co. Missouri and in Texas, then you are in for a real treat as there is alot of information about this family available.....These Millers are of German descent and the ancestor is George Miller b. abt 1750. I cannot relate to your Ike Miller...... Good Luck.......M.Kalapus ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 6:20 PM Subject: [ERATH] Re: Searching for information on Fred McKinley MILLER > Hello list: > I have recently subscribed to this list. 3. Hello! I would like to comment on the subject of "Ice". About 62 years ago, when I was a babe in arms, my daddy, Everett Jones, would get up at 3 A.M., my mom would get me up and dress me, and would all go to Ranger, Texas, to pick up a truck load of ice. My daddy worked for Cora Perretti[pardon the spelling if it is incorrect] This truck load of ice was delivered to the beer joints in Mingus. As this is where my mom and dad and I were living at the time. My daddy drove an old Chevrolet truck, according to my dad it had a clutch, brake and reverse. According to my parents Mingus was a wild and woolly place. During prohibition it had the reputation of being the wettest place between Fort Worth and El Passo. Thank you for allowing me to share a bit of my family history. I realize that Mingus is not in Erath Co.,[although my birth certificate says so] I know that it is not that far from Stephenville. 2. Hello list: I have recently subscribed to this list. I waited until my schedule slowed down before asking for your help. I just got my father Fred McKinley MILLER's social security application. It states he was born in Dublin, Erath County, Texas 2 Nov 1896. His parents are listed as Ike MILLER and Laura STONE. I know Laura STONE was b. 24 Jul 1873 in Comanche Co. Texas and is the daughter of Andrew Larkin STONE and Elba E. Jones who were married 15 Nov 1865 in Comanache Co. Texas. Laura Bama STONE married J.L. 'Ike' MILLER 11 Jun 1889. I was surprised to see Fred was born in Dublin, Erath County, this was the first link to your county I have found. I hope someone can help me with my ancestors. The MILLER side is my brick wall. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. Joan [email protected]
