Thanks for your reply. My grandmother's brother, Thomas Edgar (Ed) York, born November, 1852, NC, worked for the Railroad in Erath Co, then Bosque Co., He was then moved to Stamford, Jones Co., TX about 1900. He had grown children that remained in Bosque Co. One was William A York, who was a teacher and also a county judge. He is buried at Meredian, Bosque Co., I understand. Also, Berry M York, buried at Oak Grove in Bosque Co. I believe Thomas, Jr was buried in Jones Co. Rollis A York, born in 1888, was another son, but I don't know where he lived or was buried. These boys would be 1st cousins of my dad, Lester L (L L) McElroy, and I remember him saying that a man he worked with in Stephens Co., remembered two of Uncle Ed York's sons working for a bank in Austin. That would be hard to prove.Again, thanks for all who answered my questions. I do not have a McElroy in Indian Creek,,,,,,,,,however, we have many unmarked graves. I also do not have any York's but I have seen that name listed in other cemeteries. Indian Creek Cemetery is located sw of Stephenville,,,off of Hwy 281 going to Hico. You go about six miles to the Selden cut off,,,,which is on the left,,,,,on the right is a methodist church,,,,,,,,right beside it is a country road which dead ends into Indian creek cemetery. Huckabay is nw of stephenville. I will also check my chalk mountain cemetery,,,,,,,its located ne of stephenville about 10 miles off of Hwy 67 going to glen rose. Also,,,down the street from me lived a Mrs. McElroy that was her married name,,,,she died several years back after spending sometime in a nursing home,,,,,do you know about her....Her house was on long st and alexander. I will see if i can find any other information. Eva Marie [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dortha F. Indian Creek is on the other side of the county from Huckaby. There were Yorks closer to Huckaby- maybe also Sap Oak or Patillo- they both have old cemeteries. One of my Hunt relatives married a York- they lived in Patillo. He died about two years ago. His brother lived in East Texas as I recall. Hope this helps. Shirley
Would you explain, please, where Indian Creek is located? My grandmother is buried in Erath Co in an unmarked grave. We were told it was at Huckaby, this is the location an aunt many years gave. Are there any records in the library that would give that record for 1895? She was Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzy) York McElroy. She was married to Jacob Silas York. She died October 18, 1895, leaving Jacob with six children. My dad, was seven years old when she died and two were younger. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Hi, most cemeteries are listed in Rootsweb under the County they are in. Hightower is in Erath county, but is listyed under Palo Pinto , as the readers did not know they were in Erath County. Check with Cindy Shipman about how to enter them and make connecting links to the listing. I think it was enterred before several there now were buried. Take care, Charles A. Hi, Kathy, The Czechs and Slovenians or Slovaks and some Polish are more recent immigrants than the Germans of New Braunfels- kerrville- Fredricksburg- malone- Muenster-Westphalia-, Windthorst- - Thorndale- . These Germans had lost the Aborptive Revolution and came direct from Germany to Fayette County, Texas Sons of Herman Lodge owned plantation and re organized before moving on inland- 1850's appx. Most were Lutheran or various Anabaptist and Separatist groups. In 1960's the West and Cameron Unity of the Brethern (Moravian) Church still had Czech language Worship and preaching one Sunday a month- Rev, Bezdek was the Czech pastor and someone else did the English when he was in other locations- they were sort of between the modern Mennonites and Baptist in Doctorine. They also have active Moravian Evangelical and Catholic Churches. Bro. Emil Becker of Stephenville Baptist was raised in a German Mennonite home. The Czech, Slovaks, and Moravians of West, Cameron, Pasadena, Ennis, and some sections of Da;llas and Fort Worth get along fine at such events as the Westfest and the Ennis Polka Festival. Westfest now invites Spanish Polka and Norwegian dancers of Bosque County in one Cultural tent. Cameron and Hillsboro used to have llorts of Czech Polka music on Radio- and Dad liked it. We could hear it in Eastern Erath County on Radio. The Ku Klux Klan had a leader near West who told the kids in Public Elementary School to throw rocks at the "Foreigners" in Catholic Elementary schools. In 1920-40. West had a movie theatre where many learned more English. When Dad taught at Harmony school, appx. 1920 (near Meridian State Park) , all first graders spoke Norwegian. All at West of the Czecxh group could not speak English- so the Tours and West Catholic Churches still had elementary schools to prepare them for High School. and still do,last I heard. The TP and other RRs brought in Czech and any Short Europeans to mine coal in Newcastle and Thurber and East Oklahoma- those who were mining coal in Thurber in 1900were European born. The Company built 2 Catholic churches in Thurber- one for the Irish and one for the Czechs, Slovaks, Italians. They separated them into single language crews for top production. Stephenville should have Czech & other Naturalization records. Some from Thurber mines, born in Europe, were buried at West. Over the Cage and Crow Bank in Stephenville there was once an Italian Opera Hall. My Moravian ancestors were Hipp families from the " Dutch Fork Hipps" of the Carolinas, before 1760'sYowell nd Mitchell branches of my family had early Germans coming before Rev. War. Many Scotch- Irish- Germans came from Ga. andMiss. and Alabama to Tennessee to the area between West and Corsicana and Waco. The Yowel,. family still has a few hundred acres of blackland cotton there. I have a book saying , in pen and ink , WYLY HOLLINGSWORTH- FROM SPRING HILL, ALABAMA TO SPRING HILL ,tEXAS, 1860's. One of this family was a coach in Whitney. and my grandson on his dad's side was descended from this Hoillingsworth family. Remember, some from Alabama and Georgia and Mississippi north of the Tennessee River thought they were in Tennessee, but when Great Grandad 8 Generations back, Col. & Gov. and U.S. Congressman John Sevier died surveying the land- and those following him finished the present boundaries. Mom used to know mrs. Stemberidge and visited wuth her at shopping or public gatherings. Take care, Charles A. Do you have a George Montgomery listed. His date of death would be around 1879...Thanks, Joe
Hi Eva, Do you have a S.L. or Samuel Lynch Thompson listed? He was born in 1858 and died between 1894 and 1897. Charles, I've seen you mention West in several of your postings ...I have Stembridge ancestors that settled near West (actually somewhat closer to Aquilla) then moved to Erath county near Bluff Dale. Do you know any of the history of that area? Don't know why my English ancestors would have settled in a Czech community ...maybe tired or sick? Just wondering .... Kathy Tate
Hi, I do not know this answer- I have more info. If I get there, I can check, the old Census listing against the headstones. Is the Indian Creek Reading list posted on Rootsweb yet? Last funeral I attended there was for wife of Cousin Joe Wyly, som of Will Wyly and Carrie Vinson or Vincent,Wyly , who are also buried there. Minneola used to teach at Fairy and in Hamilton County rural schools. She has 2 living sisters. These graves are near the Briley and Moxley , and Wyly Graves. Joe's sister is past 90 and lives in Bellmead , Texas- Minneola Wyly Fulbright. One of her sons lives in Axtell and runs an Electronics store in Waco and the other son is a Lawyer in West Texas. Hi, I knew some Carters but do not know their family tree. One was Rawleigh Carter ,a farmer at Selden- Garvin Wood bought hios land many years ago and built his dairy there now run by Sherwin Wood. His twin brother Kevin Wood hjas enterred other interests. Raleigh Carter had a long white beard in the 1940's. He raised 2 children- possibly adopted? Clyde Carter and his sister. Another group of Carters- 2 or 3 families, lived at Cedar Poin and near Pony Creek, depending on available land. They attend Pony Creek church some. I almost forgot- one of dad's lifelong acquaintances and my Stephenville auto insurance agent was Zane Carter in 1950's. Take care, Charles A. Wyly On Thu, 28 Aug 2003 16:09:08 -0700 "Dortha F. Charles, Did you ever know of a William A Carter, and wife, Lillie E Carter? I understand he died in 1891 in Erath Co. They came to the county from TN, and after he died Lillie ran a boarding house. I found her on the 1910 census in Thurber and in 1920, in Harbin Town, both in Erath Co. Oscar W Carter, their son, was born in December, 1888, in Stephenville, and married my aunt, Berlin McKinney, in Stephenville, in 1919. The other children of the Carters were George M, born 1883, Nellie, born 1886, and Jessie (female), born 1898. I will appreciate any help.
