A final reminder the Erath Genealogical Society organization meeting well be held this Saturday, September 13th, at 2pm, in the Dublin Public Library. I look forward to putting faces with the names from here. So come meet others with an interest in the history and genealogy involving Erath County. Hi, Its September and time for us to think about the annual meeting at the Turnbow Cemetery. At our meeting last year, we voted to meet again in the fall and see if we could get more attendance. Just in case you forgot—it will be on Saturday October 18th 2003. As usual, we will meet at the cemetery about 9 AM and hopefully we will have some nice fall weather. Bring a covered dish if you can, and come anyway if you can't. We always have a lot of food. I am usually at the cemetery by 9 AM and ready to meet and greet all of you. Meet people, talk genealogy, family etc., until noon, share a nice pot luck lunch and then a short (and I do mean short) business meeting. Laura Turnbow Williamson, our former treasurer for 30 years is now living at a retirement home in Dublin. She turned 96 this past August and if any of you would like to drop her a card the address is: Mrs Laura Williamson 118 East Live Oak Dublin, Texas, 76446 I hope that now that we have changed the date, you will not only be able to come, but to also bring a relative (or two or three). We need new members, people who have ancestors buried there prior to 1970. For those of you who cannot make the meeting and would like to send a donation, my address is at the bottom of this letter. If any of you are interested, I have about 8 copies left of my book, "The Families of Turnbow Cemetery, Erath County Texas" Hope to see you on October 18th. Alice Moore President, Turnbow Cemetery 6851 Cape Meadow Drive Converse, Texas 78109

Hi, Col. Honzie Rogers was retired Military when he became President of the Walnut Springs school board. Some put his name Rodgers- not sure - as some Texas Germans lived in the area. Womacks lived there- I had always thought they were Norwegians, from the Womack Hall and Lutheran Church between Clifton and Whitney- One flew the German Republic Flag in WW 2 while his son was overseas fighting Germans- or was it WW1? Dad taught some Womacks in Harmony School near Meridian where the entire first grade spoke Norwegian- they soon learned English ., without English as a Second Language or any Federal Proigram. Then I learned of Womacks in Rev. War and one marrying a Hatchett cousin in Bosque County. Honzie Rogers had a bayonet scar across his chin and upper neck from combat days. Barber Ira Hurley drowned while untangling hooks in the Bosque- Jackson Hole- Jackson Crossing area or just below-, and a tree fell on him and held him under - no wind that day. . "Aunt" Lela Belcher Hurley said that Honzie knocked on their door at dayligit the day of the funeral. He had some breakfast makings and told her to let him do the cooking and housekeeping the day of the funeral > He proceeded to wash dishes and cook for family and best I remember, he missed the funeral taking care of the house and meeting those who brought food. "Aunt" Lela and my Great Aunt Etta Robinson Moxley were cousins and liferlong friends- Lela in her Walnut Springs Greenhouse and Aunt Etta was in Fort Worth, but they visited a lot when we lived there. The Euloth Family was their kin and lived across from the Walnut Springs Cemetery. Lela and Etta had shared an apartment before they married- either in Stephenville or Johnsville. Aunt Etta was a descendqant of Rev. "Choctaw" Bill Robinson, once half time pastor of Stephenville Foirst Baptist and Dublin First Baptist. Rev. Robinson and Great Great Grandad REv. & M.D. William Pinckney Hatchett were organizers of chirches in Hico and Pony Creek and Dr. Hatchett orgasnized 17 other churches from 1845 to 1890. His son organized the Selden church, where Dr. Hatchett retired. Oner of Aunt Etta's Daughters - Elbertine Moxley, married Marvin Shannon, the Blind Fort Worth Attorney and part owner of the Shannon Funeral homes and ambulance services in Tarrant County. Marvin once played golf with Bob Hope at the Colonial Country Club charity benefit. - Marvin had his Caddy to put down an orientation board for his toes and tell him the distance to the next hole Elbertine's young brother, J.B. Moxley and I used to spend a few days with Great Aunt Susie Moxley of Indian Creek, near Pleasant Hill Methodist Church- or "Chigger Hill" to the older generation. Great Aunt Susie would take us to Indian Creek above the Bosque, build a campfire, and fish or sleep all night. She would tell us the Bible stories about Daniel, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abendego of the Bible and how their Kosher diet made them more clear headed and fair skinned with no acne or skin blemish, The wise men who ate the King's food were not fair skinned and were not wise thinkers. They were killed when Daniel interpreted the King's dream. and they could not. There is a lady that posted information over a website concerning a journal written by her early family in 1884. It is titled "Missouri to Texas by Covered Wagon" Her name is Kathryn Herrmann and the website is: http://members.aol.com./_ht_a/kathrynherrmann/page4.html The journal is about 50 pages and it covers events from Missouri to Brown Co.,TX. It mentions a family that traveled in the wagon train by the name of Thomas S. Williams or "T.S. "Greasy" Williams. T.S. "Greasy" Williams was married to Almeda Jones, sister to my great grandfather William Harvey Jones. This Williams/Jones family settled and raised their families in Brown Co., TX. "Greasy" Williams is reported to have had the first fenced in piece of land on Lost Creek close to May, Texas. This account is listed on page 48 under the title May Settlers Carved Frontier from the book , "In the Life and Lives of Brown County People". I hope that this will give you a bit more information on your relatives that came from Missouri to Texas. Glad to share and help as I can. Hi, If you are talking about Col. Honzie Rogers ranch, it was on the Walnut to Hico road, not the Chalk Mountain to Walnut Road. Col. Rogers married the sister of Tom Fair. She was in Nursing school in Tarleton and Styephenville Hospital with my Aunt Mary Wyly, who is now 98. Little Tom Fair was an Ag teacher at one time since his high school Days. The Fairs were from Stephenville area. Tom was Walnut Springs Postmanster in 1960's. The Rogers land was roughly south of the Flat Top Ranch, downstream on Flag Branch and/or the East Bosque. Flat Top had the Roberts family as resident manager, and Stroud fsmily ran the Feed mill and worked under Mr. Roberts. The Stroud boy had a damaged leg from falling on to a conveyor belt when in Grade school, and he hung on to a steel Rod until they could stop the mill. It damaged his leg, but he was a High School, Athlete. Emerson Rhodes and Shipmans and Bakers lived adjoining the Flatr Top Ranch. Would the person who posted the photo of the Confederate vets at the Erath Co Courthouse mind sending the photo with names. I saved the picture but lost the names in the process. - - - Thanks - -- Rex
My husband's family came to TX in 1830 from Missouri. He had a wife and two small children. He was William Ambrose Tinney and wife was Margaret McCoy Tinney. They were with the Green DeWitt group and settled in Caldwell Co. That is six generations from Ambrose to Charlie. Add two more for our grandchildren!! I've noticed this string about early Texans. The best resource I have found on the Old 300 and early Texas pioneers and history is the Brazoria Museum. It specializes in early Texas history. Their e-mail address is: http://www.bchm.org/ I have found the staff to be very helpful.
