Does anyone know where I could purchase the book "We Sing Their Harvest Song" by Richard C. King? Lola
Hi, before a recent Texas Constitutional amendment was passed by Voters, which established a Legislative Oversight Committee to periodically review for outdated laws and delete or update them, even Bee Trees were half yours if you found it and blazed a mark on the tree which was registered in County Records. When I grew up, neighbors would follow bees and find a tree and rob the honey, and offer half of it to the landowner- 1930's. There was also another kind of branding or marking before 1800. Great Grandad 8 times back was Col. Ben Cleveland of Rev. War who was also a Judge of the Old Pendleton District it is recorded in those court records that at least 1 horse thief was brought before Judge Cleveland- A horse was life or death to the owner sometimes back then. The Judge once sentenced a horse thief, convicted with Witness testimony, to have his ear notched, after being in British Stocks one day and taking a lashing of 39 licks. Then came the ear notch and a small branding iron which left a HT brand (for Horse thief) on his cheek, then he was released. As soon as he could travel, he headed for the frontier privacy and rested in a safe place until his hair and whiskers grew out and hid his scars. Col. Ben's North Carolina Militia , after Battle of King's Mountain, had mock trials and hanged some setlers of the British Militia and marked ears, fingers, and cheeks of some of Maj. Patrick Ferguson's men. Cols, Sevier and Shelby drew swords and stopped the mutilation and released the prisoners and told them to go show Cornwallis what happened to thjem. A few months he surenderred after he realized Ferguson was dead and no Colonial British Militia was coming to reinforce him. Older men used to joke with small boys, in a playfrul mood, while whittling, that they might notch our ears if we did not quit teasing them. . We pretended fright- but never had seen any one do it \ By the way, Texas & Southwestern Cattleman's association detectives today claim that livestock and farm equipment theft is as great as it ever was. One man in Hamilton or Coryell County was found to have a bulldozer, a farm Tractor worth several thousand dollars, and other equipment under shade trees off a main road not long ago. Today Branding catle can be done with Caustic Soda- but how many mark their farm equipment or record the serial numbers for identification?? Hi Janet, In answer to your question don't know. My mother divorced J.D.Shugart (my stepped-I adopted his name) in the mid 1940s and I never saw any of the family after that except for two. Victor Shugart (J.D.s brother) who was killed in a car wreck in the late 40s and Larmen or Lormen who I also believed was killed in an auto accident. Larmen (who was from Dublin)had 3 children. Their mother was Farrell (McKinney). The children's names were Butch,Bonnie and Faye. J.D.s family last lived in the Austin area and some in Alice,TX If this ties in with any of your information please let me know. Jerry Shugart

The information below is from my second cousin on my Father's side. His name is Tyler Wayne Pryor. He has much more on the Pryors from Erath County. If anyone would like his information, I will pass the question on to him with your email address. And he can answer you direct. He may sign on to this listserve, but don't know when. Reba Criner I m not sure yet, just when the John R. Pryor's came to Erath County. But my aunt Mary E. Pryor was born in Erath County on October 6, 1887 is recorded in the birth records in that county, so I assume they moved to Erath County before that. It has been handed down to me that Grandfather Pryor came to Texas and homesteaded some land near what is now called the Bunyan Community. He cleared the land and built a dugout to live in, then went to Hope Arkansas and got his bride and came to Texas and got married. I have a question about that as to why go to Arkansas and get his future bride then come back to Texas. Back in those days that kind of thing does not happen. When I was born, I was born on the old homestead and I remember the place where the dugout was. My Grandfather lived with us on the old homestead and my father farmed and raised cattle there until we moved to Lamesa in 1934 on the same farm that Uncle Josh and Aunt Myrtle (Pryor) Bostick (we called her Aunt Mryt) lived on, they were our next door neighbors. We left Lamesa and moved back to Erath County at Morgan Mill. when I got back from the service I married a girl from there. We had our first child there and then I went to Lamesa and played Baseball for the Lamesa Lobo's and Uncle Josh And Aunt Myrt took care of my wife and my baby when I was on road trips. When a large sandstorm came, which my wife had never seen, Uncle Josh told her it was a real bad storm and put her in the cellar for about an hour she has never forgotten that but they were the greatest of buddies. When he had the washer (laundry business), Mednia would go to do her washing and Uncle Jush would put our little naked boy in the first tub in front without any clothes on and let him play in the water, It embarrassed my wife to see people come in and see him but Uncle Josh would keep him there. Well guess that is about enough of remembering so will close and hope to hear from you soon.
