Charles, I have really enjoyed reading your recollections of Erath County. My gggrandfather and gggrandmother are buried at Pony Creek ( Thomas Smith), and my ggggrandmother supposedly died and was buried in the county. I don't have it bookmarked. Do a google search for "Primitive Baptist Church Texas" and that should narrow down the search. There are a lot of them. It seems to me the site I found was for Waco, but not sure. www.google.com for google. Kim, Yes, Betty Lou is my cousin. I am the ggranddaughter of Samuel Levi Shipman, brother of Isaac Henry Shipman. Mike
Hi Charles and all... I don't know if Hugh and Connie Herring are related to the Hightower Herrings or not. The ones I'm related to are buried at Bishop, which is not too far north of Hightower. Henry Herring, wife Lydia (Matthews) and a couple of their children are there. Lydia was my great grandmother's sister. You can see the cemetery online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txpcgs/cemetery/erathbishop/index.htm Kathy
Shirley, I married a girl from Morgan Mill and I lived there for some time, I helped dig the grave for Bob Herring. I went to school with Curtis at Morgan Mill. The Hightower Cemetey is about 4 miles north east of M.M. I also knew several of the other children children Raymond, and Buddy. Wayne
Hi, in 1960, Sam Rose and Ira Hurley were the barbers in Walnut Springs, Texas, where they are now buried. Ira Hurley grew up in Duffau and Pony Creek & married Lela Belcher, a cousin of my Great Aunt Etta Robinson Moxley. They are descenhded from Bill Robinson who pastored at Stephenville and Dublin- "Choctaw Bill" and organized some churches like Pony Creek and one in Hico , with Great Great Grandad Dr. William Pinckney Hatchett. Dr. hatchetty organized at least 17 Churches at Gonzales and on the Bosque after War with Mexico, 1845 and his completed contract of a Texas Ranger Volunteer Scout for Gen. Taylor's American Army from Fort Jessup, La. on Old Spanish Road. Fort jessup and Raylene were inold Spanish Texas- east of tne Sabine River, in Present day Louisiana- west of Natchitoches and the Cane River. Charles Wyly
Hi, Flowerchild- and no- they are not proven to be related to other Erath County Rileys- one posibility. My wife's grandad James Whitcomb O'Riley , born appx. 1850 , in Irtish Catholig Rase Horse country ran away from home in Ireland at age 12 after an accident which broke a prize Stallion's leg. He wrapped the leg and stowed away in a lifeboat of a ship for 2 days with a small lunch and the Capt. needed help- crew was sick. The Capt. knew he could not enter without parents, soi he brought him to a New York Tinker's (Sheet Metal) shop where the ships bought buckets and such and signed him on as an AprenticeHe had a family Back east - the wife died and one son had a small shoe factoiry. he then came to Cleburne, Texas and married Alice Marie Renfro- they had 3 children and the immigrant died appx. 1890 and is buried in Cleburne. My wife was the baby of 5 girls and two Riley Boys, most born in Levelland, Texas. O(ne brother is buried at Van, Texas and Jim is buried at Dublin- he had bought a farm at Muleshoe from Vernon Basker, then a Carleton Ranch from the same man, then traded the ranch for a smaller Sandy land farm near Don Mitchell's Dairy, which Joe Mack and and Donna still run- between an old Dublin Fenced road west of Carleton Road and Lake Proctor. It is posible that some of Mr. Riley's half brothers came to Texas- but no proof and the family denies it- One is buried in new York State. Take care, Charles Wyly
My gguncle, Mason Overstreet "Street" Jones(1871-1963) was married to Mary Melivina Jane "Molly" Sechrist(1872-1976). He was the son of Mason Grigsby "Mase" Jones nad Mary Henrietta Crowder. She was the daugter of Julius Lindsay Sechrist and Rhoda Anne Beavers. They had 9 children. The last one still living "Dick" Jones turned 96 in May and is the overseer at the Beth Haven Cemetery in the Bays Community. I have a pic from the Stephenville paper celebrating their 75th Anniversary and one of them in ffront of their home in about 1900-1905 in Erath Co. My other gguncle, Isaac Henry Shipman(1872-1951) was married to Ollie Florence Sechrist(1876-1943). I don't have her info in front pf me at the moment. Mike
Any more information on the Herrings buried at Hightower cemetery? Shirley
Mike are you related to Betty Shipman Loyd? I am the ggreat grandaughter of James Monroe Sechrist. His daughter "Vinie" Sechrist was my mothers grandmother. She was born there in Erath county. Hi Sherry. My great grandmother was Lula Melvina Sechrist, her father James M Sechrist son to Andrew and Mary Hepler Sechrist. Lula "Viney" was born there in Erath. I still have relatives of one kind or another that live in Stephenville. It is such a small world after all isn't it?
