Hi, Erath Listers: I'll add a bit to the Sparks info. that's been coming in. My Sparks line came to TX from MS about 1833-34 having lived in Lawrence Co., Homes Co., Yazoo Co., and a short stay in Copiah Co., MS before coming to the San Augustine area and then on the Nacogdoches, TX where the Sparks family settled in a group. Col. Richard Sparks was born in 1793, Athens Co., GA and went with his family as a child into the Creek Indian Territory when a family group moved there in 1811 on a Passport from the Governor of GA. In the family group were William C. Sparks with wife Mary Polly Fielder and five children and his brother in law, Stephen Noble with wife Sarah Sally Fielder (sisters) and his seven children. Stephen's first wife was Sarah Kemp and online information states that Kemp, Kaufman Co., TX was named in her honor (family input). They had children together and then Stephen married #2-Sarah Sally Fielder and they had children. According to what I have learned, Stephen died befo! re his famiy moved on to TX, but some ended up around the Houston area. Fielders also moved into TX, but I haven't explored their connection. Col. Richard Sparks was appointed the last alcalde of Nacogdoches by Adolphus Sterne about four months before the outbreak of the TX Rev. He was a large landowner at the time, owing some 50,000 ac. before he was killed on a surveying mission. He was shot through the head by a maurauding Indian party as he lay sleeping near present day Corsicana in Navarro Co., TX. Two others were killed in the Indian attack also. He had served as sheriff in Yazoo Co., MS; constable in Holmes Co., MS and served 3 years in the MS State Legislature before leading a family group to TX. He also delivered goods to Chief Bowl(e) or Duwali of the Cherokee and the delivery receipt was also signed by Chief Bowl(e), Thomas J. Rusk and Sam Houston, Chief Egg (Bowle's son). His wife was Elizabeth May Cooper and she died 1 Jan. 1848 in Nacogdoches Co., TX. Sparks' daughter, Elizabeth Ann Cooper Sparks, married Samuel Everett Rogers, b. NC and they moved from Nacogdoches to Smith Co., TX when it wa! s formed and then removed to Erath Co., TX where they lived for some time. Son of Samuel was James Carroll Rogers who m. Nancy Elizabeth Howard. Her sisters married William Franklin Stephen of Stephenville, Rufus Bean White and William Henry Stracener - all these families were early Erath Co. settlers. I've found that many of these early TX relatives are buried in the Barbee Cemetery. Richard Sparks had several brothers and sisters who moved to TX also. Anyone related to this Sparks line? Nancy in CA
Charles, Gosh I wish those names rang a bell but they don't ...I don't know if they are of the same family or not. My John Jackson Sparks was born in North Carolina in the 1830's, fought for the Confederacy then came to Texas. I don't know why he came to Texas ...at one time I thought maybe he'd first stopped in east Texas (Cherokee county area) but I've nothing to confirm that. After the war, I found him living with the Fred Isaacks family in Erath county ...Fred and his daughter, Sarah, had just come to the Bluff Dale, TX, area from Cherokee county. I'll tell you, ol' John is one of my brick walls! His mother in law is the other! ...all I know about her is her name was "Mary" and she was said to be an Indian. ...lots of "Mary's" out there!!! If and when you sort through the Sparks info, you might take note of some of the names and email them to me. I'm pretty much at a loss here and any suggestion is very welcome. Thanks... Wayne, Thanks, I've visited with Royce and in fact, gave him a copy of most of the Sparks information that I had at the time. My grandfather was Jeff Sparks and great grandfather was William Frederick (Fred) Sparks ...I remember Jeff talking about "Uncle Oll." And I *think* I remember your mother ...if she's who I think she is, she was a sweetie. I am really looking for information about both John Jackson Sparks (which would have been your great grandfather) and his wife, Sarah E. Isaacks Sparks (they used to refer to her as "grandmammy"). I have been told that Sarah was half Indian but have not been able to document that ...all I know is her father was Frederick Isaacks and her mother was "Mary" ...Mary died in Cherokee county Texas in about 1851 then Fred Isaacks and daughter Sarah moved to Bluff Dale and he remarried. If you remember any old family stories or know any tales about those folks, please pass them along. Also, I have pictures of John and Sarah Sparks ...if you would like a copy, I can email them to you. And, I have a picture of a man and woman and two children that's labeled: "Marthie McCleary, Aunt Emmer Wallace's sister" that I suspect is part of your family ...I can email that too if you'd like. If there's anything I have on the Sparks line that you want, please let me know. There once was a Sparks family Bible that I'd love to locate ...it *might* have names or dates but then, it might not. I can email or mail anything you're interested in. Oh, and I would like to see if you have some dates, places of births and deaths on Oll and his children. I have very little on his line. And again, thanks. Kathy

Kathy, I have several pages of Sparks info gatherred in La. , Miss. and others by Matie Roberts Somerville, , a deceased cousin Mattie Roberts Somerville of West Monroe, La and of Natchitoches, La. DAR and a certified Geneaologist. She was also a Wyly-Sevier - Cleveland descendant and had Telles, and Somervilles back to 1400's. Her Husband Bill called us to pick up her records when she passed and we came home with appx. 20 file boxes of records and blank record sheets in our Station Wagon. Ring any Bells? I don't know if some were predistined or not Charles. My Grandfather was an ordained deacon with the Primitive Baptist church. I remember as a small boy while attending church services in a private Hamilton residence, he sure liked to sing. They did not really have Ministers or preachers as I understand it. Supposedly his sister was accused of "Heterodox principles" whatever that is, by the church in probably late 1800's. She told them she was happy the way she was so they kicked her out. According to a cousin, the records for the Hopewell Primitive Baptist are in Stephenville somewhere. I also have never heard of a Sam Rose or the barbers in Stephenville you mentioned. My Ggrandfather did have a brother named Samuel Adam Burney Rose. He fought in the War between the States from AL and never left that area. I have no info that any of his descendents ever were in Erath county. Burt ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charles A. Hi, I found the site by going to Bosque County History Site, and there was a link to BOSQUE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST ASSOCIATION. It also refers to oter primitive Associatios and doctorinal splits over such as types of music and - were some Predestinated to go to hell.?? The Bosque Association spread from Little Flock Church between Oglesby and Temple to the Brazos. Across the Brazos, a Rev. Roberts- a Hatchett descendant- was preaching. As you may know, there is a Duffau Association primitive Baptist camp between Glen Rose and the State inoisaur park. Someone there may have more records. Sometimes they used to lease the camo for a week to Bosque County United Pentocal Churches. Charles A. Wyly
Hi, Sam lived in Bosque County- Walnut Springs when I knew him. His wife was from Erath County and he or she was related to the Duffau & Pony Creek & Walnut Springs Hurleys and Uloths. , charles Wyly
Kathy, my memory may be playing tricks on me, but wasn't Connie Herring a close relative of Johnny Bow Ripley??? There were some Ripleys in old Johnsville School District, but had not thought of this bering Mrs. Connie's family. ( That was the name she had the students to call her. ) Charles A. Wyly
Wayne, Which Sparks are you from? I have quite a bit of information (including a major brick wall) on the Sparks family. Kathy > Yes I knew the Henry Herring as he was a distant relative of mine, from the > Sparks side. also Clay Herring, but they was not related to the Bob Herring > that I knew.
Mark your calendar. The Erath County Genealogical Society will be meeting on October 18th (one week from this Saturday) at 2pm in the Dublin Public Library. We will be electing officers for the coming year and planing for it. You'll come!!
Is there any one out there working on the Angelly, Angeley, Angley families that lived in that area at one time. I have been told that an Angelly ran a hotel somewhere in that area. May not be true since I have no proof. But I did see an Angeley buried in the cemetery listing that was just posted. So thought I would ask if anyone knows anything about any Angelly's living in that area or is doing research on the Angelly family. Thanks, LaWanda
Charles, Do you, or anyone, have anything on a John T MCEORMICK in Erath Co.? He and family were on the 1910 Erath Co. census. Location is Precint 6 and also states Morgan Mill and Gordon(?) Road. I'm not sure of the Gordon, it could be Gordne Road. John McCormick was born in MO and his parents born in IL. His wife was Ida and she was born in TX.He was 43 and she was 37. He was a farmer. There are two stepdaughters listed of Mr McCormick: Bessie Halbert, 20, and born in TX, both parents born in TX, and Edith, 16, born in TX and both parents born in TX. These are evidently Ida's children. Edith is my aunt and was married to (James) Horace MCELROY 1913, in Thurber, TX. Family information stated Uncle Horace married Edith McCormick. She was born in Morgan Mill, 1894. The census gave the girls surname as Halbert. I would like more information on the Halbert name as well as McCormick. Thanks very much. Kathy, Yes I knew the Henry Herring as he was a distant relative of mine, from the Sparks side. also Clay Herring, but they was not related to the Bob Herring that I knew. Wayne
No, she was originally a Smith, who married a Russell. I am not sure at this point what his first name was. Her mother, my ggggrandmother, outlived all of her children. Nancy was the youngest. They came to Texas around 1853 to Springhill or Emmet in Navarro County. My ggggrandfather, Elias Birchfield Smith died shortly after the Civil War and the family migrated to Erath County in the 1880's according to the records I have. They lived around Pony Creek and Daffu, but I visited what was supposed to by my ggggrandmother's old home place in Dublin when I was around 7 or 8. Most of my family is now deceased so it is hard to find the records for Erath County, but I am still looking.
