Ellis Co. surnames I am researching are BASSINGER, YOUNG, WARD, WOOLAVER, PORTERFIELD, WELLS , JOHNSTON and SMITH. The WARDS and YOUNGS migrated to Italy from Randolph Co. NC in 1858 and inter married with the BASSINGERS who had come from TN with some WOOLAVER relatives around 1870. MY hardest nut to crack has been the SMITHS who came to TX from AL. I can find nothing about the parents but I do have three marriage records for three of the siblings from Ellis CO. Eli T. Smith married Leona WELLS in 1881, Jesse Smith married Joseph D. PORTERFIELD in 1891,they had five sons, Thomas Joe, Alvin, Uriah, Rufus, and Houston. Zilpha Smith married William Sherman JOHNSTON in1901 and they had Jack Caswell Johnston born 1902 in Forreston. All the marriages were at Waxahachie. There were also suppose to me three other siblings Abb (could be Abner or Albert) ,Webb, and Hattie. Maureen Smith
