Sylvia, The information you give concerning the coincidence of dates of the birth and the establishment of the county is right on target. I ignored our family myth that my great-grandmother, Mary Liza Ramsey was the first white child born in Dallas County until I discovered she was born four days after the county was established. She was also further identified as the first white child born west of the Trinity River and that confused me as well until I got a proper map and saw the West Fork of the Trinity River and the East Fork of the Trinity River. Which brings me to my point: Family myths should be investigated, and our 21st Century notions set aside so that they don't get in our way. Mary's daughter, Genevra Hamilton, by the way, was one of the first women to be married in the new courthouse in Waxahachie! She and Jim Scott "hitched up Old Dan, the fastest horse in Cedar Hill, and took off to be married." I will never forget the tinkling laughter that accompanied that story when she told me about their wedding. I have it on tape from 1958.
