Mr. Jonathan Erwin Prince. Jr., was born in 1850 in Waxahachie, Texas, and recorded as the first white child born in Ellis county. (supposed to be a plaque in the old courthouse, need information of what happened to the plaque when the new courthouse was built?)I read with interest and concern your statement (in italics above)...there were many settlements of "white people" in this area long before 1850 and no doubt many white children were born here prior to 1850. I would be more willing to accept the italicized statement above as a fact perhaps if it read:Mr. Johathan Erwin Prince, Jr., was born in 1850 in Waxahachie, Texas, and recorded as the first white child born following the creation of Ellis county. I wish I could tell you what happen to the Prince plaque you mention, but below is the text of a plaque presented to Ellis County on it's 150th birthday last year. ELLIS COUNTY 15OTH BIRTHDAY 1849-1999 ON DECEMBER 2Oth 1849, ELLIS COUNTY WAS CREATED BY AN ACT OF THE LEGISTRATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS. IN CELEBRATION OF THIS SPECIAL SESQUICENTENNIAL OCCASION, RECOGNITION IS GIVEN TO ELLIS COUNTY CITIZENS OF 150 YEARS AGO, CITIZENS OF TODAY, AND FUTURE ELLIS COUNTY LEADERS. DONATED BY ELLIS COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION Thank YouSylvia Smith , Chairman Ellis County Historical Commissionsylsmith@azmail.net
