All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Virginia Crilley http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00003.html#0000642 July 8, 2006, 12:22 pm The Butler Herald - Taylor Co. GA 1912 May 7-9, 1912 was the 22nd United Confederacy Veteran's Reunion in Georgia. These Ellis County Residents returned to Taylor County to visit family. The Butler Herald Tuesday, May 14, 1912 Mr. Henry Ruffin and son [Claude J.] of Texas, are visiting his brother, Mr. G.T. Ruffin and family. Mr. Allen Cody and sister, Mrs. J.C. Young of Texas, after attending the reunion are visiting their sister, Mrs. Amos Byrd, this being their first visit in thirty years or more. They were reared in Marion County but have long resided in Texas, where Mr. Cody is successfully engaged in farming. Many former Taylor County folks, now residents of Texas are indeed welcome visitors to friends in Reynolds and Butler and vicinities after an absence of quarter of a century or more. Prominent among them and will be fondly remembered by the older inhabitants of the county are: Mrs. and Mrs. J.W. Hobbs, Mrs. Walker Brewer, Mrs. Maude Brewer Grizzard and Mr. Allen Cody, Mrs. Young,Mr. William Draughon, Mr. John Parker, Mr. Henry Ruffin and son [Claude], Mr. Mat Carr, Mr. T.J. Paxon and probably other whose names we have been unable to learn. These came to the reunion and say it was the best yet. The Butler Herald Tuesday, June 4, 1912 Page Three Local Paragraphs After a visit of several weeks to Taylor County relatives and friends, resulting in many happy family reunions after years of absence, the following former Taylor County people now residing in Texas returned home Friday: Mrs. J.W. Brewer and little daughter, Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hobbs, Mrs. Maude Grizzard, little daughter Mary Belle and Mrs. Mary Jinks. Before making their departure they called at this office and requested that we in their behalf thank the people of Taylor County for the many acts of kindness shown them during their visit. Their appreciation seemed to be of the most genuine kind. Notes: These families lived around the old community of Leland in Ellis County. Most of these families are buried in Rice Cemetery - Navarro Co. TX The main connecting links seems to be the Brewer family. Mrs. Mary Jinks is the daughter of Septimus L. Brewer. She married William Henry Jinks (son of Willis and Nicey Martin Jinks). She was 63 at the time of this visit. Her husband had died in 1872. She eventually returned to Taylor County and is buried in Taylor Co. GA Her Jinks husband is buried in the Navarro Co (Rice Community) cemetery. Wm Henry Jinks is the brother to my grandmother, Winnie Virginia Jinks Ruffin who died in 1915. Mrs. J.W. Brewer and little daughter, Jessie (I believe this is Mattie Johnson who married John W. Brewer (who would have been a brother to Mary Brewer Jinks) Based on her age in 1880 Census, she would have been 52. I'm really not that familar with the Brewer family, so maybe someone can correct this if I am wrong) They Tarried in Taylor says she died in Ennis (which is near Rice where the cemetery is. Many of these families lived in Alma which is very close to Ennis) Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Hobbs ( I believe this to be Jonathan W. Hobbs (Seaborn R. and Elizabeth D. Hobbs) who married Virginia Brewer who was a sister to Mary Brewer Jinks) She would have been 58 at the time of the trip. ) Mrs. Maude Grizzard and Mary Belle Eva Maude (Jinks) Grizzard Mother (Oct) 1875-1926 (d/o William Henry and Mary A. Brewer Jinks) (wife of Joe E. Grizzard) (Both Maude and her daughter, Mary Belle who married ? Day, are buried in the Rice Cemetery plot next to my grandparents (H.J. and W.V. Jinks at their home near Alma, Texas. It seems so hard that one so dear who held such a strong cord of our affection should be taken from us and leave these precious little ones without a mother's love and this dear brother without a companion; but as he goes on to fight the battles of life may he realize that his precious wife has only won the crown in the glory land there waiting and watching for him, and those precious little ones tocome. While she has gone from among us her life was a perfect pattern for us to live by and imitate. How often have we seen this precious one gather with husband and children around the fireside and reconsecrate herself to God and His service. May God's richest blessing rest upon that home and fill it with sunshine, and while we feel heart-broken and our eyes are dimmed with tears, we do not weep as those who have no hope, for "some sweet day" we will all be gathered where there will be no more weeping and no more sad good byes. Just a reminder that many people research using Ancestry.com -- and they may be looking on the Rootsweb Message Board. Some County Lists are coordinated so Board Messages also come to the County List itself, but since TXELLIS-L doesn't do this, don't forget to post a message occasionally on the Board. Rice Rustler Alvie Ruffin of Alma has recently returned from France where he was with the U.S. forces in the big drive last summer. Alvie had a great experience and one which many have not been able to survive. In one of the big drives by the American forces last July he was wounded five times by a German machine gun and with a leg and arm broken lay for seven days in a shell hole while Germans were fighting all around him. He was wounded when the American soldiers made their advance and when the Germans drove his comrades back he was left behind and for seven days he was without food or water. During that time he says many Germans passed him but none of them took the pains to kill him or give him assistance. The Germans were driven back and he was taken to the hospital by his own comrades. His wounds were received while making a rush on a machine gun nest and after he was down he says he shot a German soldier that was coming on him with a bayonet. Alvie was in the hospital from the time he received his wounds until a few weeks ago when he received his discharge. -- Rice Rustler NOTES: (Grandson of Henry J. and Winnie Virginia Jinks Ruffin) Son of George T. and Lula Fort Ruffin both deceased by WW I Married Nov 14, 1920 Iola Lennon d/o Jame E and Nora E. 3. WWI Draft Registration Cards - National data base These are on Ancestry.com and also on microfilm - some libraries -- National Archives sites. "Registration" is the Key word here. (June 5, 1917 and Sept 12, 1918) every male between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. Obviously they only actually drafted the younger men -- single, no dependents, etc. Local Draft boards would have made that decision --- and in the smaller communities, I'm sure everyone knew one another quite well. But every male was required to register. The information varies and there were a couple of versions (different years) of the actual card. They don't give parent's names -- but sometimes you can get a clue because they are listed (1918 Sept) the nearest relative. Also "employer" -=- sometimes this is their father who was a farmer. They don't even give a wife's name -- although again you can draw a conclusion if it is a 1918 card -- nearest relative. I've used them to locate some of my "shoe string" relatives that I had lost track of descendants. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TXELLIS/2005-04/1114252147 This is an excellent discussion of the cards..... I know that this person did some "look-ups" and mailed out these draft card copies back in 2005. Hopefully anyone who got a copy of the Registration will type it up and submit it so we can post it on-line. http://www.genrecords.org/txfiles/ Use this form to easily submit materials yourself. Both Barbara and I can make use of this to add it to the Ellis County pages. Virginia >Virginia, >Do you know if there are other draft card books from other TX counties to >be found? Also, did every man have to sign up? >
