Jan 1, 1917 the two Interurban Companies consolidated under the name of Texas Electric Railway. The trains, connected by wires to overhead electric lines, ran daily from Dallas to Corsicana and Waco and north to Denison. It was called the Interurban or "inurban" for short and was the Texas Electric Railway Co. These ran about every 2 hours throughout the day and evening. The first track was built from Sherman and Denison to Dallas in 1900, and other lines added in the next few years. The development of automobiles, and Henry Ford's Model T which everyone could afford, was the main reason for the decline in business. The Dallas-Corsicana line ended in 1940. Letters regarding Claude Ruffin's employment: April 19, 1917, he had become Agent in Hutchins, and resigned Sept 18, 1917 to enter WW I. October 2, 1920 Mr. C.J. Ruffin Agent, Alma Dear Sir: Referring to our conversation yesterday, I hand you herewith copy of my letter to Mr. J.A. Wright, Auditor, covering the temporary Alma and Ennis arrangement which I think you will find self-explanatory. My understanding is that you expect to live at Garrett while you are working at Ennis, however, it looks to me this will work out a disadvantge for we are keeping the Ennis Station open until the passing Southbound train #543 at 10:45pm, which is ten minutes lter than the last Northbound train. Can you arrange your plans to live in Ennis and your wife go back and forth each day to Garrett for her school duties. If you could do this, it will be satisfactory for you to buy commuter books for her and send me receipt therefore and I will make you refund thereon. Pleas give this careful consideration and oblige. Yours very truly, Jas P Griffin, GPA October 2, 1920 Mr. J.A. Wright, Auditor Dear Sir: Mr. B.F. Bristow, Assistant Agent at Ennis, discontinued his services with the close of Sept 30, 1929, and should be carried on the payroll accordingly. He is succeeded by Mr. C.J. Ruffin, who should be carried on the payroll as Assistant Agent at Ennis at rate of $40.00 per month, beginning Oct 21, 1920, and until further advised. The balance of his salary ($40.00 per month) will be paid by Electric Express & Baggage Co. Mr. Bristow's bond should be transferred to Mr. Ruffin. Mr. Ruffin is now Agent at Alma and we have no one to take his place. He has agreed that he and his wife will operate the Alma Station during its regular hours, nd that he will also do the Ennis work. He should therefore be continued on the payroll as Agent at Alma until further advised. In order that all may understand the Alma and Ennis arrangements, Mr. Ruffin will leave Alma on train #624 at 12:15pm and stay in Ennis until the arrival of train #635 at 5:45pm when he will go to Alma to look after the express car, returning to Ennis on train #638 at 7:20pm and remaining at Ennis until the close of that Station with the passing of train #643 at 10:35pm. During the period that Mr. Ruffin is away from Alma, Mrs. Ruffin will look after the Station, Mr. Ruffin being responsible for everything in his absence. Jas P. I am most interested in far Southeast Ellis County just west of Mertens. My grandfather Earnest Dickson owned a farm about 2 miles west of Mertens in Southeast Ellis County. I am trying to determine when he purchased this property. Probably in the 1913 to 1919 time frame.
I'm researching the Ellis County list for Youngblood and Street, 1850-1925. Section? Don't know. Thanks, Katharine Burkett Johnston

Crilley George Tolliver Ruffin (1875-1910) G.T. was the 3rd child of Henry J. and Winnie Virginia "Jennie" Jinks Ruffin, born in Taylor County, Georgia on May 31, 1875. When his family moved to Alma (Ellis Co) TX in 1886, he was 11 years old. Their family came with other relatives and friends. He married Lula C. Fort on July 11, 1897. Lula was from Kerens. Texas. She had two older brothers, Charlie and Richard, and a younger brother, Cerft, and younger sister, Maggie. Her mother, Louisa, is a widow on the 1910 Ellis Co Census. G.T. and Lula began housekeeping in a small house built on the west end of his father's land in Alma. He was active in the Woodmen of the World Lodge in Alma. Their children were: 1. James Tolliver "Pug" Oct 3, 1906 m. Afton Anderson (Lived Salt Lake City Utah) We're not sure when G.T.'s health began to fail, but he developed a severe pulmonary condition and for the last year of his life he was confined to his room. He died of consumption at 3pm on Friday, June 24, 1910... only 34 years old leaving a young widow with a very young family --- Alvie 12, Arthur 10, Winnie 8, Clarence 6, and Pug only 4. He is buried in the Ruffin plot in Rice Cemetery with a Woodmen of the World monument. Tragedy again struck when Lula died on Aug 27, 1912. The children lived with their grandparents and uncles and aunt.
