Date Of Photograph: 1930 Photo can be seen at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/photos/parkandp201ph.jpg Image file size: 40.5 Kb This is one more photograph I found in my father's pictures. He is William M. (Will) Park in the conductor's uniform. This was taken about 1930. He has written another name on the back and I cannot be sure what it is. It looks like "D. D. Yaw" but am not sure. If anyone has any knowledge of who this person is please let me know and I will correct the name. Additional Comments: I think the second man is probably dressed to work the freigt division for Texas Electric Railway Company. My father worked this division for the last few years before the interurban shut down between Dallas and Corsicana. His hours were 12 midnight to 12 noon -- seven days a week with no time off for vacations or holidays. I'd like to encourage all of you to look through your files and submit marriage records for your Ellis County people as researchers do need those especially in the early 1900's. ================================= Barbara Knox has on-line several books of early marriages: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txellis/ctrecords/index.htm Marriage Records Book A Sept. 1850 - Nov. 1857 Book B Nov. 1857 - July 1872 Book C Aug. 1872 - April 02, 1878 Book D Beginning 3 April 1878 - 1879 ========================= But for the early 1900's there is a vacuum. The marriage licenses don't give you much family information, but they will show who married them, and the date. You can add what you know about the family as well. We have some "forms" which are easy to use, and you can use them at your leisure. http://www.genrecords.org/txfiles/ Choose "Marriages Individual" ---- Add in the comments section who their parents were, etc. So many of our Ellis County communities had marriages occurring with their neighbors in those early days, and by sharing what you have, someone may get a lead on someone! Also I've discovered through our Interurban data that there were several romances that occurred due to meeting on the trains! http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/ellistoc.htm This is the index page where these records will appear after they're submitted. Ellis County Texas Archives History .....Czech Immigration To Ennis 1980 ? ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/txfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Virginia Crilley http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00003.html#0000642 July 12, 2006, 5:19 pm Book Title: Ennis Daily News article ca 1980's (no byline) Immigration of Czechs to Ennis For generations individuals of Czech extraction have made many notable historical and cultural contributions to the Ennis area. As the second largest ethnic group in Texas, individuals of Czech descent now number nearly one million. The Czech language is the state's third most popular spoken language. From 1620 until 1918, the Czechs lived in the Bohemia and Moravia provices under the rule of the Austria-Hungary empire. The Czechs 1848 revolt against the Hapsburg Monarchy was unsuccessful and oppression resulted. Czechs began to look toward American for freedom and opportunity. In the late 1840s Czech immigrants came to Texas in increasing numbers. The first Czech families to arrive in the Ennis area came in 1875. They settle primarily in the ares of Creechville, Telico, and Crisp. As additional Czechs came, they tended to flock to the communities where they knew someone. A large influx of immigrants began to come to Ennis in the mid 1880s. Their talent for farming led the Czechs to settle on the rich soil areas of Texas. Many would work on the farms of other immigrants to get a start until they were able to obtain their own property. Many also worked and saved money to bring additional family members from their homeland to this "land of opportunity". Some of the newcomers first moved to other parts of the United States. Then they'd hear about Ennis and the opportunity to purchase land and farm. Many of the immigrants came to the United States at a young age, perhaps in their 20s. Some knew each other in Europe and then married here. Others came with young families, while some came with their entire family -- great grandparents, grandparents, sons and daughters and their children. Many men came early and later sent for their family members. Much has been written about immigrants to the Ennis area being primarily from the Moravian province. Although many were, there were also a large number from the Bohemian province. A very limited number of people from Slovakia found their way to the Ennis area. Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia were the three large provinces of the Czech lands which came to be Czechoslovakia in 1918. Since Jan 1, 1993, Bohemia and Moravia comprise the Czech Republic and Slovakia is known as the Slovak Republic. Various reasons played a part in decisions made by Czechs to leave their homeland for America. The decision must have been tough for many. They left behind their homeland, properties, personal belongings, and many times parents, brothers, sisters, and in some cases spouses and children. There were promises of returns to visit, but most never materialized. They came with visions of an ideal life in an ideal land. Many left their homeland because of the fear of conscription into the Austrian Army because of the unsettled Balkan situation. Some had already served in the Army and feared they'd have to serve additional time. The Czechs looked toward American for freedom and opportunity. Transportation companies encouraged travel to America. He was a conductor on passenger line for a number of years and in later years worked as conductor on freight line. This picture was taken in 1930 and the others in the picture are not identified. He is in conductor's uniform and was around thirty five years old. After the company quit running the interurban my father stayed on with the company and helped dig up the tracks and cross ties--from Dallas to Corsicana. This was manual labor but times were hard and he was happy to have a job for that much longer. He later went to work for Missouri/Pacific Railway and retired from them in 1960. My Grandfather Otha Demell HUNT was born 9 Mar 1915 in Ennis, Ellis County TX, his parents were Cleveland H. HUNT b:1893 & Molly Hight d:approx winter 1916. They are listed on his birth certificate, she died shortly after Otha was born, but I can't find any Ellis County records reflecting any of this except the birth certificate from Ellis county. How would I go about finding out any more information from Ellis County? --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail Beta.

My Davis line was in Ellis County, Texas from about 1905/1908 (?????) until about Fall, 1909. Gggrandmother Georgia/George Ann Martha Melvinia Hayes/Hays Davis died in there on August 20, 1909. She is buried in Mountain Peak Cemetery, White Rock Mountain, Ellis County, Texas. Georgia's son Marion Davis left a journal in which he recollected: "Dad was over at Waxahachie one day and met another one of our old Alabama friends, Enoch Allred. He lived at Mountain Peak... He also told Dad that Dosh Tinley and his family lived right by him. They were close friends of our too in Alabama...Mr. Allred brought his wagon and moved us over to his place." "Then in 1909 we moved to the Payton place up in the valley about 4 miles. Mother was in bad health when we moved to the Payton place and she gradually got worse... she passed away on August 20, 1909. We buried Mother in the Mountain Peak graveyard...Mr. Payton helped pay the funeral bills...I went back and paid..." Gggrandfather William Washington Davis and two sons, Marion Washington Davis and Virgil Byrd Davis left Ellis County shortly after her death (because of the drought). Uncle Marion also mentions a Mr. Nigar a friend from Alabama who also migrated to Ellis County and Aunt Sarah Susannah Hayes Tillison who lived Garrett, Texas. Sarah was the widow of James David (Crockett) Tillison. She died in Garrett, Ellis County, Texas on August 24, 1920. Sarah and James David (Crockett) had the following children: Mary V. Tillison - married Peter Washington Carroll James Tillison - married Mary G. Mixon John E. Tillison - married Minnie Wilson William Preston (Bill) Tillison married Fannie Alice Aldredge Roseanna (Annie) Tillison married Jessie Barfield Martha E. Tillison married E. A. Green and Benjamin Franklin Tillison married Eula Lee Edwards. I suspect some of the descendants of my Tillison cousins are still in Ellis County, and I would love to locate them. Additionally, I know that a funeral home handled George Ann Martha Melvinia's funeral services, but I have not been able to locate the records of one operating in the Mountain Peak area in 1909... would really love to be able to document her burial in Mountain Peak - her grave is not marked. Finally, if anyone has access to the deed records, do you find any record of a Peyton/Payton (he may have been the land owner since Uncle Marion referred to the location where they lived as the Peyton Place.... Thanks for any help, hints, or suggestions anyone has to offer. Patricia Fry

i am looking for information on Barlow, Albert who moved to Maypearl from Crowley after his mother passed away in 1918. Albert's father and mother, Roy Dewitt and Elsie (Mueller) Barlow met and married in Cleburne, TX. Elsie remarried in 1913 and she and her husband (and her four children settled in Crowley). Albet married Zora Williams in 1922 and they raised 7 children in Maypearl. In 1967, Albert retired and moved to Waxahachie. He passed away in 1977 and Zora in 1995. I have a copy of a portrait photo of a man and woman and their two children taken about 1908. I believe one of the children is Albert when he was four years old and would like a living descendant (if there are any left) to take a look at this picture to see if they can identify it.
