June 25, 1899 The Ellis County Singing Auxiliary is in session at Alma today and a number of Ennis people are in attendance. Prof E. Corbin of this city is President of the institution. I think I have a photo of this group. (or a portion of the group)... It seems to fit -- doesn't it look like they are singing from the books? http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/photos/elliscos2477gph.jpg Does anyone know about Prof E. Corbin?
Hi I am researching Huff, Keaton and Davis families in I believe Bardwell and Ennis only, but could be in other places. Also know Huff and Davis were in Carnack in the early 1900s. Thanks. Sonna H. Calvert
I do have a puzzle and am hoping someone can help me or give me suggestions on where to look. My great-grandfather grew up in Ellis County. Several of his family are buried in the Bardwell Cemetery, including his parents and brother. He and my g-grandmother and their teenage children moved to Houston about 1925. He and his wife divorced before 1927, as he was remarried before he died that year. He died in July 1927. His OBIT from the Houston Post mentioned that his body "was being forwarded to Bardwell at 8 p.m. Tuesday, over the Texas and Brazos Valley by Fogle-West company." I thought he would be buried in Bardwell near his parents P.B. Hargus & Sarah Blanton Hargus) and brother (J. E. Hargus). But he isn't there. He is not listed in the Ellis County Cemetery book. Then I thought maybe he was buried in Italy, where more family is buried. They had also lived in that area, which is very close to Bardwell. Would anyone know who would maybe have a record of this. Would the local Funeral home have that information....if indeed his body was shipped there. The obit was very specific about this, and since his father and brother were still living in the Bardwell area at the time, I thought he might have been taken there. Or even Italy, where the family also lived. But no record of his being buried in either cemetery. I have personally walked through each cemetery also. Is there another cemetery in the area? Any suggestions? I am thinking maybe they changed their minds and buried him here in Houston, but have not found a record here either. I am looking for the marriage data for JAMES CALVIN HILL who married widow Mrs. Flake Bowling between 1920-30. Also seeking Mr. Hill's obituary --he died in San Antonio on April 1, 1956 and was buried at the City Cemetery in Waxahachie the next day. Since Ellis Co. was his original home, I am hoping that notice of his death was published in the local paper. Thanks for any help! If anyone knows anything about the schools and churches in these now ghost towns, I would appreciate your contacting me. I would like to get them a Texas Historical recognition and I need to know when they began and when they ended as well as everyday occurrences there. They operated in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Thanks, Carolyn

Would like to know more about this church and who it was named for. Also wondered if the "graveyard" mentioned as being on the border was the Alma Cemetery or one connected to the church itself. I think this would be in the general direction of where the Alma Cemetery is, although I'm not sure. All this land was on the West side of the Railroad and came out of the W.W. I am researching Hargus, Blanton, Turns in Ellis County. Lived in Italy, Bardwell, and Waxahachie. My great-grandfather James Walter Hargus (son of Peter Hargus & Sarah Evaline Blanton) was at one time a Deputy Sheriff in Ellis County. He married my great-grandmother Lennis Turns about 1900. The Hargus family and the Turns family was in Ellis County from at least 1883. The Blanton family probably about the same time. Quite a few of them are buried in the Bardwell Cemetery. Does anyone know how to locate graves in St. Joseph Cemetery? Is there a directory or office to assist you? Would anyone be able (after the 104 degree heat is past!) to take a photo of a tombstone for someone? Please write me privately about that part. Virginia Crilley
