Does anyone know more history of the Baldridge Light Infantry? Or the men whose name is mentioned.... Ennis Commercial Recorder Friday, May 20, 1887 Vol VII No 20 The Military Concert The Military Concert which was given at the opera house, on last Monday night, by the "Baldridge Light Infantry" proved to be a grand success. The house was well filled with an intelligent audience. The performance was opened with prayer by Mr. Erwin. Professors Parsons and Marchbanks, each made an interesting talkk of about half an hour, and made the boy's bosoms swell up with ambition. As a whole the affair was an honor to the Company each one being perfect in their different parts. The young ladies who honored the Company with their fine singing and recitations, deserve the many thanks of the B.L.I.
Ennis Commercial Recorder Friday, May 20, 1887 Vol VII No 20 F.A. Rust, Editor and Proprietor Endorsed by Ennis Dist Alliance Rice Ripples Things around Rice are lively--the town is crowded--everybody is in town on account of the ground being too wet to work, however, there are a few here who never stop wet or dry, when it is too wet they carry a plank to stand on, and it is said that they have better crops than anybody. Rice came very near having a tragedy Sunday evening. A crowd of young men were at the depot and a freight train passed at full speed. Mr. Peter Mochell attempted to jump on the train and was jerked under it but somehow managed to keep from under the wheels, and was not inured other than a few bruises and a bad scare. The train stopped, thinking he was killed or badly hurt. It is a great wonder somebody hasn't been killed long ago. They collect at the depot and jump on every passing train, ride a short distance and then jump off; the train men cannot help it, they have their duties to perform and cannot see them until they are jumping off. It is only a matter of time until some of them will get crippled if not killed. Several lots of wool sold here during the past few days at from 18 to 22 1/2 cents. Was the West Ward school on the same street that ended into the Waxahachie High school? I went to a red brick shool on that street, Ruby Lee Dyess was my teacher. I remember a Miss Eva at one of the grade schools I went to. In 1947-1948 at Italy and Waxahachie from 1948 thru 1954. It may have been Italy. She had blond hair and always wore it in a bun on top of her head. I had forgotten about her until I read this obit. It may not be the same person, I don't remember her last name, but thanks for jogging my memory. callie > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Virginia Crilley" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, July 25, 2006 7:32 PM > Subject: [TXELLIS] Grizzard, Walton Henry 1929 Obit > > > > Oct 12 1929 > > > > Waxahachie, Texas Oct 12 > > > > Walton Henry Grizzard, 75, a widely known Ellis County pioneer, died at > his > > home here of heart trouble. Michele, I saw your posting on the Ellis County Genealogy Board and went to see what I could find on your family. After hitting a complete brick wall with my paternal grandmother, I decided to procure her SS-5. After receiving it I continued to hit a brick wall even with her parents names. Most likely this is due to my inexperience, but I cannot locate them in any census that puts them all together. I am thinking an obit would help. This is the information I have: My grandmother: Lillian Charline Jones b. 23 Nov 1915 in Ennis Tx, Ellis Co. d. 30 Mar 2001 in Dallas Co. (Charline Jones is the name on the SS-5) Parents: Charles Henry Jones Ida B Webb according to the SS-5, Ida was deceased at the time of application (11/30/36); however, Charles Henry Jones was still living (I thought he may be found in the SSDI but so far have been unable to locate him since there are so many Charles Henry Jones and Ive no idea when or where he died). >From the application, I deduce that Ida B Webb may have been living in Texas, possibly Ellis Co, at the time of her death. I do have additional information on Charline, but nothing further on her parents. As usual, any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Michelle

Texas Railroad Commission Grants Interurban Service Discontinuance ICC Hearing Is Slated to be Held On October 4th Local Service had Consisted of Eleven Round Trips Daily Discontinuance of the interurban service between Dallas and Corsicana by the Texas Electric Railway has been approved by the Texas Railroad Commission, it was learned here late Tuesday afternoon. An Interstate Commerce Commission hearing to discontinue has been set for October 4, 1940. Service, which connects Ennis with Dallas, consists of eleven round trips daily. The Texas Electric Railway will continue its regular schedule between Dallas, Waco and Denison, it is stated. In the application for authority to discontinue the service the federal cotton restriction plan was blamed for the decreased revenue. From 1929 to 1939 revenues fell from $346,890 to $94,233. Operation of the line began in October, 1913. At that time passenger service only was given. Later the railroad commission authorized freight service. James P. Griffin, president of the Texas Electric Company, said Tuesday he had not been informed of any change of plans for the hearing and that so far as he knew it would be held. "The railway has suffered considerable freight and apssenger revenue declines, " Mr. Griffin said. "The building of good automobiles and good roads on which to drive them has eaten into the revenue not only of the Texas Electric Railway, but also all rail carriers." Note: The first Interurban Car passed through Ennis Oct 18, 1913.
