My gg grandmother was Francis Cornelia Wooten who married into the Saxon family. Her daughter married my g grandfather Stephen Kenyard Dickson. Francis was born in 1841 in Mississippi and died in 1913. She is buried in the Richland Cemetery just east of Mertens. The Wooten or Wooton came first to America sometime in the early 1600's from Northamptonshire, England. Thomas Wooton(1565 Castor, Northamptonshire, England-after 1641 in Isle of Wight Co. Virginia). His father was also Thomas Wooton and his grandfather was Lewes Wooton who would be my great-grandfather 11. From Virginia descendants moved into North Carolina and then into Mississippi. There used to be a Wooten Cemetery near West Point, Mississippi, in a small place called Lone Oak. This is in central Mississippi in Clay County. The last report that I had was the owner of the farm on which the cemetery is located, moved all of the headstones up against an out building and probably has planted crops over the actual graves. It is as if these people never existed. I could never do that to a cemetery. My connection to Ellis County is that my grandfather Earnest A. Dickson had a farm just west of Mertens in Ellis County. Thanks for responding. We are always looking for another branch of our family tree. Possibly my Wootens have lived in Mississippi. My Gr Gr Grandfather John Shelby Wooten (b. 1815) was born in Kentucky, but his wife, Caroline Waters, was born in Mississippi in 1826. Their children were born in Louisiana from 1841 until 1859, then the last two were born in Texas. I have little information about the Wootens and the Waters, but family tradition indicates that John Shelby may have been part Cherokee, but we aren't sure about that. My Gr Grandmother Ellen Beatrice Wooten Cook Lilly told her grandchildren about Sam Houston's buying horses from her father when they lived in Walker County. I found a young, single Alford Cook living with a cousin, Wm Berry, not far from the Wootens in Walker County in the 1880 census. That record does show that Alford Cook's parents were born in Mississippi (I guess that's what Msp stands for?). That's about the extent of the Wooten/Waters information that I have. Sorry I don't know more. There is a family of Wootens who were quite prominent in Abilene, TX, history. I believe there was even a high-rise Wooten Hotel. When my grandfather, Ellen B. Wooten Cook's oldest son, was young, he attended the cornerstone laying of the first Hardin-Simmons University building. That was 1892, so he was 9 years old. He also talked about living in Buffalo Gap (near Abilene). If your Wootens are a part of that family, then our Wootens may be related. Betty > Were any of your Wooten ancestors in Mississippi? The answer is, YES. Fair Pynes and his wife Mary are the ancestors of my Pynes kinsfolks. I also have Wheaton as his parents but don't have any of Fair's siblings. I will get with Danny Pynes, a cuz of mine and get him started again, as he is very sick with cancer at this time. Of all the luck Fair's grandson also married a Smith, Georgia Ann, who's mother is Alice Jane Hodgson is a sister to my GGrandmother Margret Elizabith Hodgson Lemons. I am told that the Pyne's moved to around Mt Vernon, in Franklin County, maybe Sulphur Springs in Hopkison County before moving back East a bit to a little Community called Lydia in Red River County. Lydia is about 6 to 8 miles Southwest of DeKalb. I will get back with you as soon as I can, Max PS, Thadious Sovieski Pynes, Fair's son, Was living in Franklin County, Texas near Mt. Veron in the 1880 Cenus. Thad and Sina Johnson Pynes are buried in an unmarked grave in New Hope Cem, near my home Southwest of DeKalb. I really appreciate the information that this active web site has offered to us who do not live near Ellis County. We've been through Waxahachie via I-35 several times but we've never actually spent time there. I hope, one of these days, to come do some genealogy exploration. I looked at the Maypearl Cemetery entry and found this statement below -- that Mr. Wilemon was buried on his farm in 1907. My grandfather's 16-year-old brother, Clifford G. Cook, is shown to have been buried there in 1903. Was he buried there first or was his body moved there later? Does anyone know? "The 1907 death of landowner William P. Wilemon and subsequent burial on his farm led Maypearl citizens to discuss the establishment of a cemetery for the community." Thanks for any information. Good morning, Max. If my Pynes are related to the Bowie and Red River County Pynes, it is probably quite distant. My Pynes is my Gr Gr Grandmother Janie Pynes Smith (husband, Jourdan Smith) 1798-1878. She was born in SC and is buried in Wilson Valley Cemetery, Little River, Texas. Her husband died in Alabama in 1859, so she came to Texas with her son Andrew Jackson Smith and other family members. They all came to Texas after the Civil War, maybe about 1867, even though I suspect some where here earlier and went back to Alabama when the war started to join forces with their families and friends in Alabama. They were all in Texas by the 1870 census. One family story says that A. J. thought they all ought to come to Texas, so I suspect he had already been here prior to 1860. My Gr Gr Grandmother Janie's siblings are Mary, Janie (1778-1878), James, Fair, Nancy, Benjamin, White, Mary, Wheaten. Her parents were Wheaton(en?) Pynes and Catherine Heartley. I haven't done much research on the Pynes branch, so if any of those names are familiar, please let me know. My other lines connected to that family, Smith, DuBose, Pynes, Hampton seem to have migrated more or less together from South Carolina to Florida to Alabama to Texas. BTW, did your family use other spellings that you know of? Paynes? Pines? Thanks! Betty, The http: address should have an ml added to the ht at the end of the address, but the _Ellis County Archives_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/ellistoc.htm) should work. Then click on "historical schools" to find the Reynolds School listing. Jane B. Smith
Hello Betty, Thank you for your response and interest in the Reynolds School probably in Leland, Ellis County, Texas. I would be very interested in the picture that you have. I have no picture of the school. The picture of the booklet is on the _Ellis County Archives_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/ellistoc.htm) Ellis County Archive page. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/history.ht_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tx/ellis/history.ht) Click on "image" following Reynolds School. There are three pages and three images. Let me know if there is a problem finding this. And please let me know how I can access the picture that you mentioned in your email. Thanks very much. "> Jane Smith [email protected] was fortunate to have this School program." ******************* Hello, is there a picture of this Reynolds School program? I looked at the TXEllis site, but did not see it. I don't know if the Charley Cook in this list is MY Charley Cole Cook, but I have one born March 19, 1885. He is brother to my grandfather Robert Iverson Cook (b Oct 6, 1883). Their father died about 1890 and their mother, Ellen Beatrice Wooten Cook married George C. Lilly. I found in the 1900 Census of Ellis County, Texas, that Ellen and George C. Lilly were listed with 7 children. The census said that Ellen had had 8 children and 8 were living although only 7 are in the census. The list did not include Charley Cole Cook. I found a Charley C. Cook (age 25) in Clark County, Arkansas, Antoine Twp, in the 1910 census living with a different family of Cooks. I understand from my deceased grandfather that the boys and their step-father did not get along. I suspect that Charley left home shortly after Beatrice Ellen remarried. Another brother Clifford G. Cook (b. March 18, 1887) died in 1903 and is buried at Maypearl, Texas. I submitted to this web page some time back a picture of a school that I suspect may have been of my grandfather's school when he was about 6 or 7. You can view it among pictures on the web page, title "Robert Iverson Cook." I am also interested in the other Cooks listed in the program since I know nothing of the Cook line beyond Alford G. "Fred" or "Fredda" Cook. I have a picture of George C. Lilly and Ellen Beatrice Wooten Cook Lilly and some of their children. I'll upload to the web site if you think it would be beneficial. The picture appears to be in the early 1900s -- maybe at Clifford's funeral? All were dressed up. Charley Cole Cook was not among the group. Thanks! Jane Smith [email protected] was fortunate to have this School program. We're not sure who the photo on the front is. We've managed to locate most of the families on the 1900 Census, but would enjoy corresponding with anyone who might know more about any of them. We are pretty sure this school is in the vicinity of Leland -- which is near the Trinity River east of Ennis and Alma and not too far from Navarro County line. There appear to be two alphabetical listings... not sure if this indicates anything. Book Title: Booklet Cover: Souvenir Picture of J. T. Hello, Jim, I know little about the Rodgers line. This one happens to be my gr gr grandmother Mary Elizabeth Rodgers, b. 1844, Morgan Co., AL; d. 1906, Marlin, Linestone County, TX. Her father was Larkin Rodgers b. TN and Mary Aycock b. AL. Mary Elizabeth married Berry Vernon Sowders, 1838-1897, who is buried in Eutaw, Limestone Co., TX. Actually, that's all I have on our Rodgers line. I have noticed the different spelling of Rodgers, but other than that, I have nothing about siblings, etc. I do know that they lived on a farm where there were mineral springs. People would come to Sowders Wells (outside Kosse) to drink the mineral water. I think Mary Elizabeth ran a rooming house on the grounds and Berry Vernon was a Bible "scholar". All I have are family stories -- no proofs -- but I do have one family group picture. Sorry I can't tell you more. Betty > Were any of your Rodgers from Lamar Co., TX?? > > Jim S
