    3. Does Hallie Threet sound familiar to you? I called my friend in Barry and she said she doesn't remember anything but the name "Hallie". She said to send our friend who we grew up with about the Threet family. He usually knows everything about everyone so maybe he can help. 3. For 20 years I lived in Ovilla which is near Midlothian. I taught school in Duncanville. Several years ago Ovilla published a book. There might be something about your family in the book. I suggest you contact the libraries in both Ovilla and Midlothian and maybe Duncanville. Since Duncanville is so close to both these towns I suggest you look there. Duncanville has a nice library. I might come up with some names of some of the old timers there who could help you. 3. The article was written by Lester Jordan in 1977 and given to me by a relative. I never met Lester Jordan. The book shows that Jordan Powers was buried in the Shiloh Cemetery but his wife was not listed there. If I find out any more, I'll let you know. The book did give the names and info on their 8 children. -Carolyn ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 4:05 PM Subject: [TXELLIS] Lookup Ovilla History Book SMITH > > > Below reply to my original post: > [There is mention in our book of Jordan Powers marrying Susan Ann > Smith, born Aug. 13, 1845 at Fayetteville, Tn. 1. [TXELLIS] Lookup Ovilla History Book SMITH
    2. Below reply to my original post: [There is mention in our book of Jordan Powers marrying Susan Ann Smith, born Aug. 13, 1845 at Fayetteville, Tn. She moved to Ellis Co. with her father and three brothers; James E., Robert L., and Stephen Smith. They settled in Waxahachie in 1848 and her father Lee Smith owned the first shoe shop there. This was in the Jordan Powers Family write up. I am the one who compiled the book. –Carolyn] Hi, Carolyn. Many thanks for your reply. I am not sure of the publication d ate of the Ovilla book, but possibly there is a submitter of the Jordan Powers family article with an address? I am hoping for a contact with the submitter as there seems to be a mix-up regarding the Lee Smith family. Susan Ann nee Smith Powers was born in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co, TN in 1845, she did have brothers Stephen and James E., but not a Robert L, and her mother was still alive in 1848. The Lee Smith family was still in TN in 1850 as below: 1850 Census Lincoln Co TN P 220 Dwelling 205 SMITH, Lee 52 M Shoemaker Value 1700 SC Elizabeth 46 F TN [wife, nee Clift, married 1826 TN] Stephen 21 M Shoemaker TN [middle Clift] Elizabeth 16 F TN [wife of Stephen, nee Ellis] Henry 17 M TN farmer William 15 M TN James 13 M TN Susannah 5 F TN [Susan Ann] These children match up with age ranges on the 1840 TN, 4 sons, not 5. Lee Smith died in March 1860 in Ellis Co TX of consumption and was a shoemaker per the Federal Mortality Schedule Index of 1860. Son Stephen C is head of household in Ellis Co TX on the 1860 census, Susan Ann as 15 and living with them; she married Jordan Powers in 1865. The Robert L mentioned might have been a Clift relative through the wife of Lee, Elizabeth Clift, or perhaps a stepson to Lee, as Lee apparently married a second wife 7 Jan 1851 in TN, prior to a move to Ellis Co TX. Land deed records in Ellis Co in 1856 and 1857 are the earliest we have Lee documented in Waxahachie but it is thought he arrived there prior to that but after 1851. So the questions I have regarding the Powers family article are; how was the year 1848 as coming to Ellis Co determined as it does not correlate with the 1850 TN census; and just who is the Robert L that he would be referred to as a brother of Susan Ann, dau of Lee? I would like to hear from anyone with an interest in these families. Again, thanks, Carolyn, for your prompt reply and your time and effort spent in compiling this history book. 1. [TXELLIS] Lookup Ovilla History Book SMITH
    2. Hello to the list. In need of a lookup in the Ovilla Texas History Book if anyone has it. An old query revealed a mention of the book with information on a Lee Smith of Ovilla ca 1850s but I would like to verify the year that he arrived in Ellis Co from Lincoln Co TN if possible. There was also mention of Lee opening a shoemaking shop in Waxahachie, the first one there. Mentioned: Lee SMITH, wife Elizabeth, son Stephen C. with his wife Elizabeth, and probable other children of Lee, also a Robert L. as son of Lee but Lee not his father; is his last name possibly referred to as CLIFT, Lee first wife maiden name. We believe that the wife of Lee, Elizabeth, is the McMinn mother-in-law of our John T. Simmons of Ellis Co and is the second wife of Lee Smith, and would like to confirm it was their marriage back in TN in 1851. Many thanks in advance and if someone in the Genealogy Society would like to reply I would be happy to make a donation to that organization. Please excuse no apostrophe as I went along as they seem to get made into question marks by Rootsweb, even if plain text. Both are daughters of Jacob A. and Charlotte Hesser. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

    3. Sylvia - THANK YOU! Harris Co history has always stated that John & Alief had no children .. well, they did have one, although briefly. but this is the first mention I've ever seen of little Samuel. He will now be added to the narrative. Now my curiosity is really up. Second son??? So who and where is the first? RE the post office - it would have been listed under Alief ... when Mrs. Magee, first postmistress, applied for a post office the gov't renamed it Alief because they already had a Dairy someplace else in Texas. And yes. I'll be happy to provide a copy of the application narrative for your publication ... Finally, nice to meet you. I'm secretary for the Harris County Historical Commission, which I've done for seven years and do not anticipate doing it next year - although I will stay on the HCHC, just doing other things. 3. I am seeking information on Sally VANDALIA ALLEN KNIGHT. She was born in Abbeville, Alabama and freed from slavery in 1865. She had an affair with Colonel William Calvin OATES of Abbeville. By whom she had Claudius OATES. Is there anyone on the list doing research on this mother and son. She settled in Italy Texas, where she owned a Hat Shop. Governor OATES put Claudius through school, and he became an Attorney. Did he practice law in Italy Texas? Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Did Miss Sally have other children by Colonel OATES? Le

    2. Thank you Pam for the information. I have the family thru the 1930 census. I appreciate your time in looking for me. I am hoping to find someone that knew the family or is a living relative. Charles was my grandfathers brother and the family was orphaned when they were very young. Consequently, we don't know much about the family. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
