In an old posting from 1996, I found a Bill Mayfield of Melissa, Texas, great grandson of Henry Mayfield. I would like to contact him, or anyone else being a descendant of Sutherland Mayfield (one of the original settlers of Ellis County, and listed as such in the Handbook of Texas online), who was the father of Henry Mayfield. My grandmother (Eula Mayfield Spruill-Newton) was the daughter of Henry Mayfield. Henry and family had moved to Valentine, Texas, and is listed in the Handbook of Texas online, as one of the original ranchers of Jeff Davis County, Texas. I am seeking the date and cause of death of my g-grandmother, Willie (McWhorter) Jones, she was born 26 December 1873/74, and is believed to have died between 1900 and 1910. She married James Richard Jones 02 December 1891 in Navarro County, Texas, who died in 1898. They had three children, William Wade in December 1892; Royal Curtis in June 1895 (my paternal grandfather), and James Richard, Jr in March 1898, all born in Navarro County, Texas. Her husband was the son of William 'W.E. Edward Jones of Waxahachie, also known as Uncle Billie, who owned a farm/ranch in Ellis County, just outside of Waxahachie, Texas. Willie may not have been her actual first name perhaps a nickname, as her father's name was William Henry 'W.H.' McWhorter, and her mother was Mary "Emma" Slater. Her husband was buried in the City Cemetery in Waxahachie as is his parents, and her parents, many of her husband's family members and her sister Mittie. She was a member of her father in law's household in the 1900 census as were her sons, but not in the 1910 census although her sons were. I will appreciate any help that is offered me, as I have been searching for her information for a number of years now. Thank You, hilltopper
I need the full date/place/cause of death of James Richard Jones and for Willie (McWhorter) Jones. James was born in August 1869 and died in 1898, and was the son of William Edward Jones and Francis Matilda (Kirkland) Jones. Willie was born in Dec. 1873 in Navarro County, Texas, and was the daughter of W.H. McWhorter and his wife M.E. James was buried in the City Cemetery of Waxahachie. Willie apparently died between 1900 and 1910. The 1900 Ellis County census records reveal that she and her 3 sons resided in the household of her father in law, William Edward Jones. The 1910 census reveal the 3 sons still in the same household, but that Willie did not Thus the belief is that she died between the 2 census', otherwise she would have taken her sons with her. I will truly appreciate your help, I have been searching for this information for about 8 years. Thank You, hilltopper
The County Clerk would be the best source for such data. You will need the actual wedding date, or as near as possible. Address is: Office of the Ellis County Clerk P. O. Box 250, Waxahachie, TX 75168 Unless it has changed recently, the fee is $9. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Nancy Cunningham Sent: Wednesday, March 12, 2008 6:37 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [TXELLIS] Marriage License I am seeking the Marriage records of my g-grandparents James Richard Jones and Willie McWhorter in 1891. Maybe someone in Ellis County would look at the land records for you and find where his farm was located. If he rented and didn't own this wouldn't help. But it's worth a try. I lived in Ovilla 20 years. If I were still there I would be glad to go to the courthouse and look at the records for you. Ellis County encompasses a lot of land so it will be hard for you to check it all. Do you know what church the family attended? There is an old Prexbyterian church in Ovilla as well as an old Methodist Church. Their records may go way back. I grew up at Barry in Navarro County and have looked at the old records at the Baptist church. As well as I remember the records are there from the time the church was organized. I'll be reading the letters to and from you to see what turns up for you. HAPPY HUNTING! A website is http://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/Etx/Ellis/ListEllis.html and there is a message board here; plus some cemeteries will allow lookups. Do a search of google.com with key words (funeral home, waxahachie, tx) and the results will be at least 5 and each one has a website and phone number and email addresses. I have had great success with funeral homes contacts. Carl Martin
