FYI-- Did you know that Old Alton was the "county seat" of Denton County until 1857,when the county seat was created as Denton, TX? This was due to A Texas legislative requirement at the time that county seats should be no more than a day's ride by horseback from anywhere in the county. -----Original Message----- From: txdenton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:txdenton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jan Dane Sent: Friday, October 27, 2006 10:09 AM To: txdenton@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [TXDENTON] The US GenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project My problem is Solomon Turpin/Turpen. He lived in Johnson co. but he has ties to James F Turpen who is buried in Shiloh Cem at Corinth TX. But his name is Turpin while Martha his wife is spelled Turpen. Go figure! I don't know whether to look here or in Denton Co. I have been to Alvarado and Cleburne near where his plantation was. But since his son lived in Denton, I wondered if he might be buried there. He died around 1853. His wife, Elizabeth W Steely Turpen died in Santa Fe, TN while visiting their daughter. I know if he had been visiting Denton, they wouldn't have brought him back to Johnson Co. to be buried. Most of the old cemeteries that are on farms have been recorded in Alvarado according to the librarian there, so I guess he is not buried there or is in an unmarked grave. He had lots of money and slaves, so I doubt he wouldn't have a headstone, although much faded by now. I have looked and looked to no avail. I know IOOF is too new, but I wish all cemeteries were online so I could find those people I can't locate. Would it be a violation of copyright laws to put a list of IOOF grave photos online? It would be a massive project, but many are doing it now.
