The Denton County Genealogical Society and the Denton Historical Commission compiled a complete index of the IOOF Cemetery in 1982. It was compiled from many sources, not just the tombstones in the cemetery. If a death certificate from 1931, Denton County is not on file with the state of Texas; will it be on file with the county? Thanks for your help. Linda

Patton's Independent Company, formed at Gainesville, Cooke County. If your ancestor was living in the northern part of Denton County, it might be that he joined a unit formed in neighboring Cooke County. Also, from what I can tell, the company was assigned to Col. Bourland's Regiment, Texas Cavalry, which was a border regiment mostly protecting from attacks from the Indian Territory. At one point all of the units assigned to border duty were under the command of General D. H. Cooper, who was the commander of the Indian Territory portion of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederacy. So, your document may say Cooper or Cooke (for Cooke County). You might consider ordering his military file from the National Archives in Washington, DC. As a confederate solider, it will not be a detailed file, but will likely have muster-roll cards, indicating dates and what unit he was serving in. Occasionaly there are some pay reciepts and personal descritions in those files, but mostly just muster rolls.
