You might try laminating them in plastic....that would protect them from most things except fire....charlie2 [email protected] wrote: > Subject: > > TXDALLAS-D Digest Volume 02 : Issue 231 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [TXDALLAS] genealogy supplies ["Sandra Van Wyk" <[email protected]] > #2 RE: [TXDALLAS] genealogy supplies ["John V. Sandra, Election Day 2002 Please do NOT laminate anything of value in plastic. What Charlie2 may have ment was to encapsulate them in archival quality protective material. This is not a heat process and the adhesive does not touch the document. Plus the material used won't destroy the document as heat lamination will. I know the chemistry just well enought to get into trouble <grin>, so I rely on advice from the professionals. Contact any knowledgable archivist and you'll get this same advice. You'll find more informed advice at www.Cyndislist.com/preservation.htm than you can digest. Perhaps the best explaination I've seen is at www.archives.state.co.us/cpa/articles/paper/encapsulation.htm but there are many others. Actually, developing a relationship with a nearby college that teaches preservation, archiving and/or records managment, might be your best bet in the long run. In our area there are a number of evening classes taught on preservation of home-found documents, but we're spoiled in the DFW area <grin again>. Cheers . . .
