The story was told to us by my gr-grandmother Bertha Alma Long (b Hill County 1894). She said her grandfather had killed a man & fled the county. Her mother's dad is the man in question. We do not know his name. Her mother's name was Lena Macie Bowen (b +/- 1872). Lena's sister was Leora Bowen (b 1878/1879). Lena & Lee Ora were orphaned as a result of the "incident". Leora was raised by a family named TIPPS. Lena was raised by a family named INGRAM. Both were raised in Hill County. However, they could have come from an orphanage, so the incident could've taken place anywhere. Neither Lena or Leora ever knew who their parents were. Lena's death cert shows the following: FATHERS NAME BOYD FATHERS PLACE OF BIRTH UNK MOTHERS NAME UNK MOTHERS PLACE OF BIRTH UNK Let me print-out your message & look closely at time frames, dates, names & associations. Will write you back soon. thank you, Melanie

    3. Do you have any idea what part of Dallas that the murder took place? Was it is the city of Dallas or in Dallas county somewhere? I also have a possible murder that may have taken place possibly in Dallas county but on the Trinty River bottoms near Wilmer and Ferris which is in Ellis county and it would have taken place sometime possibly between 1875 and 1880 and maybe closer to 1880. My great grandmothers parents disappeared after having a fight where the children's Dad had been drinking and had been hitting their Mother with a big pillow off of the bed. The two children, a boy and a girl were found wandering around on the river bottoms starving and the last time they saw their parents was when their father chased their Mother out of the log cabin that they were living in. We do not know who the parents were except that the kids last names were Anderson and the boy was born in Feb. of 1870 and the girl in July of 1872. I have searched since the 1970's for news of what may have happened to the parents. I don't know if there would have been an article in the Dallas newspaper or not. There was nothing in Ferris at that time. They did not have a newspaper at that time and I don't think that Wilmer would have had one. I think they pretty much read the Dallas newspaper back then. -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of alaskaicebaby@aol.com Sent: Friday, December 30, 2005 11:06 AM To: TXDALLAS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TXDALLAS] UNSOLVED MURDER This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lyle, Rany, Raney, Rainy Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZkB.2ACI/3014.2 Message Board Post: Knocked in the Head. John Rany and Bob Lyle, who are partners in a grist mill on Duck creek, had a quarrel Thursday, which resulted in a fight, in which the former, it is thought, sustained injuries that will prove fatal. From what could be learned of the affair, Rany, who is a brother-in-law of Lyles, was grinding some corn for another party against Lyle's will, and on his objecting, trouble ensued. Lyle struck him a terrible blow on the forehead with butt-end of an ax, crushing in the skull just above the left eye the size of a Mexican dollar. Dr. Allen attended him and removed thirteen pieces of bone from the wound. He is lying in a critical condition, his recovery being considered extremely doubtful. Lyle gave himself up and was placed under a five hun- dred dollar bond. - March 6, 1880, Dallas Daily Herald, p. 8, col. 3. ----- Local Jottings. J. E.
