Re: Newton in Dalls, TX. I have Ezra W. Newton, wife Persis M., their daughter Frankie (Newton) Bell and later their son Ernest E. in Dallas Co.- in Eagle Ford. Frankie's husband William R. Bell, is the one who lived in Crutchfield House. He was a grocer in Dallas in the 1870s-1890s. Ezra migrated to Texas from NY before 1860. I have wondered if he was related to his near neighbor H.H. Newton, who came to Texas somewhat earlier. Do you have anything on either of these Newtons? Ezra, or E.W., was Postmaster of Eagle Ford in the late 1860s. The Crutchfield House on Main and Houston Sts. in Dallas, TX was first built by Tom Crutchfield in the 1850s. An ancestor I have been researching was listed in the city directories of the 1870s as living there. There is a history of the hotel online with some information about Tom - just search on the phrase "Crutchfield House". [email protected] wrote: Just a quick reply re Crutchfield Hotel. My connection to Crutchfield is thru Amanda Elmira King who married Thomas Crutchfield in Monroe Co. TN 2/4/1852, and I believe that I found where he was the owner of the Crutchfield House. Could be mistaken as long time since I did this research. I have a picture of this Thomas Crutchfield. Also, have a list of their children, I believe. Will comment on other things later. John Jay Good's wife, Susan Anna Floyd was the sister of Frances "Fannie" Floyd Crutchfield, wife of James Oscar Crutchfield, my great-great grandfather. Thomas Ferguson Crutchfield, owner of the Crutchfield House in Dallas - the 'first' hotel did not own a chain of hotels - however, I believe he was a nephew of the owner of the Crutchfield House in Tennessee. I have some information buried deep in a file that probably would tell the relationship. Thomas's father, John moved from Tennessee to Kentucky. Some of his brothers stayed in Tennessee where their father James had been given land... He was killed in Tennessee in an Indian battle. I do not recall the name of the brother that had the hotel.... Wm. Henry???? James Oscar Crutchfield was not in Good's Battery with Tom. He served in Chisholm's Cavalry Regiment. I have copies of letters that my great-great grandmother, Fannie, wrote to her sister Susan during the war... They are wonderful. The first white child article that you referred to would be about Martha Alice West who married Thomas Henry Floyd, a brother of Fannie and Susan Anna or "Annie" He did serve in Good's Battery and is referred to in the letters mentioned above. I will check my Dallas books and see what I can find under Newton. Page The

He lived there with his second wife, "Mamie" Crutchfield. She owned a dry goods store there according to the 1914-15 Texas State Gazetteer.(I found this in a book written by Ross Estes.) I would love to find some of her descendants, although, I don't believe she would have direct descendants unless she was married prior to her marriage to James Oscar. I do not know why they left Blossom, Lamar County, and moved to Tiogo. Although, there is some speculation based on stories my grandfather told me about his grandfather, James Oscar. Are you interested in the Crutchfield family or in Grayson County? Page

C. S. "Charley" Newton was in Douglas/Good Battery with Tom Floyd and (I think) James Oscar Crutchfield. John Good organized Good's Battery and was married to Susan Floyd, sister to Tom. I feel sure you have seen the book "Cannonsmoke" which contains letters of Susan and John while he was serving in ARKansas during War between the States. Have article my grandmother kept of a Floyd who was first white child born in Dallas Co., I believe. Did this Crutchfield have a chain of hotels and perhaps one in Nashville, TN. One of my Jones cousins Amanda was married to a Crutchfield who owned a hotel in Nashville. Have a picture of that Crutchfield and his wife. The Jones family lived in McMinn Co. TN but came to Dallas Co. 1855. See any connections with your line?
