I got my # when I was 12-14. Point is, it has nothing to do with drawing benefits. If your Rufus had a #, you should be able to find him on the SSDI. As I said earlier, there are 597 Savages on the list that died in Texas. One of them should be your Rufus, by whatever name. Good luck. ...............Fred

Since we all married and no longer use the Umphress name; Rupert and wife Agness never had children, and the other two children were girls who married Smiths, our line is pretty well shot! my email address is [email protected] if you would like to send your family link. I will try the papers you mentioned and see if I can't find a news clipping. As for Social Security, he was too young to draw benefits so I guess that's the reason you didn't find him. The only name I know is Rufus. Thanks again. Raymond

Newspapers there, as well as Dallas, may have had an article on the drownings. Suggest you find the sites for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Dallas Morning News and whatever the Denton newspaper might be called. I did not find a Rufus Savage, Texas, on the SSDI; however there are 597 Savages there, so maybe you need to search it for whatever his other given name was. ..........Fred

Hi, I am looking for more info on my gg grandparents, Benjamin F Shorter and Pauline Hughes Shorter, who are living in Dallas County in 1870 and divorcing there in 1890. Apparently they also used the surname Walker, for some unknown reason. They had 4 daughters, Mary Louise, Minnie, Ellen and Carle. What happened to Minnie and Carle? Sue in MN
I am trying to find descendants of Robert L. Willis in the Dallas area. Robert L. Willis was born in 1851 in Ms. and died sometime after 1920. Also in the same family plot is his half brothers Robert W. Willis and Albert. I would like to find any descendants of Robert W. Willis and his wife Ruby Sloan. Their children were: Donald Leon Willis b. 1926 Dallas Co. Edith Lavern Willis b. 1931 Dallas Co. Bessie Lorci Willis b. 1932 Dallas Lois Evelyn Willis b. 1935 Dallas Co. Hi Linda, If Robert L. died in Texas after 1903, have you tried to get his death record from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission: http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/vitalfaq.html Bill Allen <[email protected]> [email protected] wrote: > I am trying to find descendants of Robert L. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZkB.2ACI/1868 Message Board Post: Does anyone know of a cemetery located on Haymarket Road, just off of St. Augustine Road in what used to be the old Kleburg/Rylie area? It is was across the street from the Oak Grove Baptist Church. The area has grown up now and the cemetery can't be seen from the road. I don't know the current owners of the property. From what I remember her telling me, it was a small cemetery. My Mom is 77 years old and remembers it well. My mother's parents purchased a farm in the area (was Merlin Road), in 1938 and they would watch the families gather, hold services and could hear them singing across the field from them. The old church was abandoned as more people moved into the area and was eventually torn down by the new owners of the land. It was a black cemetery. The church members moved and the cemetery was no longer used after a few years. I attempted to contact several groups regarding this cemetery but no one showed any interest in it. I'm sure there must be somone who would like to know of this cemetery and the forgotten families in it. If anyone would like to have more information, please feel free to contact me. I would like for someone to be aware of this cemetery and preserve it for future generations.

I have several documents which state that he was illegitimate, which was not unusual in those days, and didn't mean the same as nowadays. The only Umphress's I have been able to find in all of the research I've done over the years is a John Umphress, 20 y.o. in 1775 Frederick Co., MD, then later, Edmund Umphress; his descendants settling in VanAlstyne Co., TX. One of his sons was named Francis Ulysses, where Mitchell's son was named Francis Ufrates (spelled that way in Mitch's probate file), or "Frate", his nickname. Edmund also had a son named John Riley, where Mitch's oldest son was named John Robert ( I erred in the earlier group sheet). I also have a pension file for a John R. Umphress in FL, who was born in AL. When I went to this census report, it was spelled Humphries, and had a 72 y.o. Uriah living with them. Several living relatives have said Missie's husband was named Levi, but I have no offi! cial documentation of that as yet. When I had the land search done on Mitchell's inheritance of land, the State sent a report which gave only Martha Humphries, illeg. as deed holder, and it was issued to her as "John Stokes heir". How Mitch obtained the land is a mystery; James Jones, J.P. was his guardian and reportedly was to sell the land on the court house steps in Wash. Co., GA in 1829, but he still owned it when he died in 1859, so he was either a direct heir or it was left to him right after it was issued in 1827. Puzzling! Hope you'll keep in touch, Barb
