Most of my Dallas area ancestors were part of the Peter's Colony. These would be the families of Enoch and Martha Stinson Horton, John William Wright, Nimrod Philips and his daughter Jane who married James Horton, Russell and Eliza Fletcher who settled in the Garland, TX area and Benjamin Franklin Frost who also settled in the Garland area. The Crossman's came to the Garland area after 1880. I have several brick walls in these families. They are as follows: Charles B. Horton, b. 1853 Dallas, TX, son of James and Jane Philips Horton of Dallas. I am looking for any information on him, especially after 1875. Jane Philips Horton. We are looking for her death date. It happened before 1870. (She is buried in the Old Horton family cemetery) John William Wright. We are looking for information on his life and his death date and place of burial. Death happened in 1892. Russell Fletcher. We know he died May, 1856. Where in Garland was he buried? Elizabeth Crossman Proctor is buried in Knights of Pythias Cemetery in Garland. Her second husband was Samuel Proctor. Does anyone have any information about him? Where was he buried? Benjamin Franklin Frost is buried in Big Spring Cemetery, Garland, TX. He had a married daughter b. 1818 in Shelby Co., AL, by the name of Emily Frost Hill - wife of Henry Jefferson Hill. Where is she? Her daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Hill married Thomas Benton Fletcher, son of Russell and Eliza Fletcher. Thomas died in 1881 and is buried in the White Rock/Garland area? Does anyone know where? His farm is now under WhiteRock Lake. Can anyone tell me where I can look to see what was done with cemeteries before that area was flooded? I am looking for the family of John Fitts Sanford who actually changed his name from John Sanford Fitts. He married a Mexican woman, Isabel Rocha, with whom he had at 5 sons, Tandy, Julio, Roberto, Antonio & Bolivar. John was born in 1859 in TN and died in El Paso, TX on January 14, 1921. I am also looking for the surnames Sifuentes, Rocha, Slaughter & Sheppard. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for calling the roll. Glenda Sheppard Campbell
1870 census, Richland Station, Sumner Co., TN: Fitts, Sanford, M, W, age 76, b. VA Fitts, Francis, F, W, age 55, b. TN In the household immediately preceding this one was: Fitts, D.R.(or D.K.?), M, W, age 34, b. TN, farmer Fitts, S. J., F, W, age 23, b. KY Fitts, T. B., F, W, age 4, b. TN Fitts, T. F., F, W, age 9, b. TN I'm not sure I read all the initials correctly -the handwriting is rather elaborate. Also, I suspect that the Francis listed is actually a Frances. In any case, your ancestor was most likely this elderly man's namesake. There is a black family named Fitts in the same location, with a 4-yr. old son named John. If you are interested in them, please let me know. You might want to check the 1860 slave schedules for TN to see if some of your Fitts families owned slaves, thus the names. There were other Fitts families, black and white, listed in the same county, but not in the same Twp., and others elsewhere in TN. Have you checked the 1880 census in TN for John S. Fitts? (There's a 21-yr. old one listed.) That census is available at familysearch.org There is a younger John F. Sanford (17) in TN in 1880 and there are some John Sanfords in TX in 1880 too but not born in TN. Hope this helps. Howdy Garland, TX began recording deaths at the state level in 1903. If your G-grandparents were in TX the 1900 U.S. census, their deaths may have been recorded by the state. You can get a lookup from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Scroll to the bottom of the page and e-mail your request to them. [If they have the records, their response will also tell you how to get their death certificates.] They can also lookup your grandparents death records and tell you how to get their death certificates. Greetings, List Members: As you know, for the past several years, roll calls have been initiated the list during June and December. Our December roll call is usually the largest because so many people with new computers or new Internet software make their way on to the lists. As part of the roll-call each member is invited (not required) to post a message with a brief synopsis of the ancestors they are researching, including relevant dates, places, etc. to the list. An example would be as follows: Seeking information on the John Jay DOE family. John Jay DOE, born 12/12/1810, Richmond, VA, died 01/01/1901, Austin, Texas Married ( on 04/04/1844 in Long Island, NY) Elizabeth Sue SMITH, born 01/09/1817, Richmond, VA, death date & place unknown (or something along those lines.) Please remember to CHANGE THE SUBJECT of the message when you reply. The subject should read something like: John & Myra Winston DOE Family. (Accurate subjects also help when the messages are archived by rootsweb.com) The roll call will end at midnight on January 1, 2003. All list members are asked to respond to the roll call (should they desire) prior to that time. Roll Calls are conducted twice a year and only on the instruction of the list administrator. This is so the list won't get flooded for roll call requests every time someone new joins the list. Best Wishes & Happy Holidays, Vince Leibowitz List Moderator
