    1. [TXCORYEL] Re: My Family of DUKE's

    3. Hi, Bobbie, and all you other Coryell Co. searchers, and all you folks in McLennan Co., also!! Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!! Please remember and celebrate the real reason for this season!! Bobbie, I agree that there is much to the idea that we should be helping each other, all we can. I do not know a great deal about Coryell County, so far as having been there is concerned!! However, a family from which I am descended did live there about 100 years ago!! In late 1879, Lovick Sherrod DUKE and his wife, Cynthia Adeline (Addie) FONDREN DUKE arrived there, from Bibb County, Alabama. They brought their eight living children with them, and also Addie's first cousin, Cynthia Alice FONDREN, plus two young black teen age men, who came with them, and stayed to work for L. S. for two years, to pay him back for their travel costs and his protection on the trip from Alabama to Texas. All their children had been born in Alabama, as they themselves also had!! These children were: Lafayette, b. ca. 1862 Quilla Coleman, b. 4-9-1864 Lena M., b. ca. 1866 Morda, b. ca. 1867 (he apparently died young, since his name is not included in the 1880 census of Coryell Co., concerning this household) Emma, b. ca. 1868 Coly A., b. ca. 1869 Margaret A., b. ca. 1872 Martha O., b. ca. 1873 Mary E., b. ca. 1877 My GF is Quilla Coleman, who became Sr., after his first son was born, and named for him. Quilla Coleman. Jr., was son of Bettie SANDERS and Quilla Sr., and was the first of nine children, one of which died young. The SANDERS family had also come to Texas, from Bibb County, Alabama, before the DUKE's had, and were located in Limestone and Milam Counties, at that time. This migrant couple, L. S. (a farmer) and Addie, were or (apparently) became Presbyterians, and the reason I am stating this, is that they are both buried in the Comanche Springs Cemetery, located between the east Coryell County line, and McGregor, in the west edge of McLennan County, very near to a railroad line, there. The cemetery was originally located (where it is now) but along-side the Comanche Springs Presbyterian Church. I feel that this church was probably a frame building, and the majority population of its congregation was primarily located near to the church, itself. The church building no longer exists, I am told!. However, the cemetery is still there, and several other DUKE persons are buried, either there, or in other cemeteries in McLennan Co. Any corrrections to this set of comments is greatly appreciated!! I am interested in locating any more specific information about the seven brothers and sisters of Quilla Jr., such as the persons they married, the families which resulted, the localities to which they finally arrived, and any other details of my (probably) many Duke cousins!! If any of the local Coryell or McLennan GEN students have any knowledge about those Duke persons (my G.Uncles and G.Aunts) or their descendants, I will surely appreciate hearing of them!! Regards to all you Texans, and you Texas descendants!! Some of us might be able to help each other if only everyone knew who we were working on in this county. It would be nice if each person would write about 3 lines giving name, date and place. > Also want to remind any newcomers that I am very glad to place your family biographies and a picture on line. Also I am still placing obituaries on line, have 631 of them so far. I'm working on I-Q at the moment. > I also can recommend a researcher who has access to the large libraries who has competitive prices. Bobbie > > ______________________________
