    3. Hi, Wish I lived close enough to Gatesville to attend the monthly meetings of the Coryell County Genealogical Society. Another great source for research are the POAs or Power Of Attorney found in county records. These are fantastic sources of information. Especially the earliest ones. How many of you have used these POA records and found a gold mine? Cheers Cassie

    2. Bobbie Ross
    3. Our January meeting of the Coryell County Genealogical Society was held last night. It was well attended and enjoyed. Bobbie Thornton gave us a very good rundown of all of the things that could be found in land records. Any record that is recorded CAN be found in land records. Unexpected things like marriages, adoptions, wills, death dates, children's names can be discovered in land records. Also - the 1845 Webster's dictionary defines step-son as a son-in-law. Also discussed was early writing styles and land measurements. Come on guys - let us know what families are your main interest in Coryell County, someone on this list is bound to be able to help you. 2. Hi Coryell folks, I'm doing work on Mastin Latham and his line. One of his sons was my gg grandfather Thomas Jefferson Latham. His 1st wife and my gg grandmother was Hannah Parker Latham. There youngest daughter Edna Octavia married one Augustus (Gus) Power(s). After leaving Coryell Co. Edna went to Eastland Co. With uncles, aunts, cousins. One of her sisters Sarah Ann married Andrew Jackson Richardson. After living in Eastland Co. for some years, most of the Lathams and Richardsons moved to Mangum, Greer Co., TX.(now Oklahoma) Any info on these folks would be appreciated, especially Augusts Power(s) or Moses Parker, Hannah's father who at one time lived in Cherokee Co., TX. 3. Hi Bobbie, I don't know if many people would know her, but my Mother Erma Dean PHILLIPS WALKER passed away on Dec. 27 in Houston. She was the daughter of Roy Mitchell & Maggie Laura PAUL PHILLIPS. She was born in Tama Valley on Oct. 20, 1917. My folks had already planned to move to Terry County when all this happened, so she was buried in Brownfield, TX. My grandparents, Roy Mitchell & Maggie Laura are buried in Turnerstown Cemetery there in Coryell County. 1. [TXCORYEL] List - Research Surnames:Key, Gambrell, Ekrut, Trapp, Fryar
    2. E. Ann Shettles
    3. I am researching several families in the Coryell Co. area. John McCoy Key was my ggggrandfather. He came to Anderson and Upshur County Texas in the 1850's but later lived in Coryell County. He is shown with the 1880 Coryell County census. He was a physician. I don't know much about him and have been looking for any other of his descendants. He had a daughter Molla Key who was born in Texas. The family story is that he had 5 wives and several children. Molla was his first child and her mother died right after she was born. Molla Key married Duffie Watson Gambrell who came to Coryell Co. in the 1870's. They had 7 children in Coryell County (Gatesville) - Mitchell, Reid Key, John Duffie, May Anna, Eunice Elizabeth, Nora Francis, and Fleta Cecilia Gambrell. I have been told that Molla and Duffie are buried in the Masonic Cemetary in Gatesville. May Anna Gambrell was my great grandmother and she married Benjamin Ernest Ekrut who had immigrated from Germany in the 1890's. She and Benjamin had 5 children - some in Gatesville and others in Fort Worth. My grandfather was their oldest son, Ernest Erbal Ekrut. Daniel Trapp is another of my ancestors shown on the 1880 census in Coryell County. They left and moved to Oklahoma in the 1890's. His wife was Sallie. Their daughter Betty (Elizabeth) married Thomas Martin Fryar and they are shown living in Coryell County in the 1880 census. (The last name was spelled Fryer in the census). They also left and moved to Oklahoma in the 1890's. Any one who is working on these lines or who has information about these people, I would love to hear from. HEWLETT Mother: Sarah E. According to my aunt's research, he was born 20 Oct 1845 and died 3 Jun 1920, and married to a "Mattie", which could easily eb Martha.. Where she got this info, I have no idea. There are two William A. Hewletts listed in a Necessity Cemetery, Stephens County, TX and one is William Senior. The other is probably William Jr. It's quite probable that she could have gone back to Coryell after he died in Stephens! If you want to pursue this line further, let me know. His mother and uncle inherited a league and a labor of land in Hill county, TX, and I have a copy of the land grant that was signed by Sam Houston. -- As near as I can tell, his maternal grandfather (Jonathan Wallace) fought in the War for Texas Independence, went back to Alabama to get his family in 1836, and died there before he could bring them west. The land wasn't claimed until after the Civil War when the Wallace and Hewlett families left Alabama. A law suit was involved, and the land was awarded to them by the Texas Courts. Also, his fraternal grandfather was a Revolutionary War veteran.
