    3. You have been very good to send in info about who you are searching for and now we are down to asking for input from people whose last names begin with T, U, V, W X, Y or Z. Something that I would like for each of you to think about and let me know. Do you have a lot of info on certain families, any published books about these Coryell County lines? I would very much like to place you on our look up list for those surnames that you have info on. This is a way that you can really help further research on Coryell County lines! Let me know. Again, those of you who have sent snail mail addresses, these will be placed in the next quarterly, so if someone can help you who is not computer enabled they will be able to reach you anyway! Another thought, our new automated boards are now in place for queries, obits and bios, and also for Bible records and wills that are pertinent to Coryell Co. families. You may enter these yourselves, in fact I plead with you to do so. The more we get out before the world the more people we can help. Thanks Guys, you are great. 3. I've been gone so didn't get to post my Coryell Families that began with the first letters of the alphabet so, will put them with these.. Of course, the Ashby family is the main research point and I don't guess I need too much on them in Coryell that I don't already have.. ( I would like to know who it was that put up the new tombstone for John Enoch Ashby and his wife Sarah Jane Downs, in the Bosqueville Cemetery, when the old wooden one burned) Anyone out there know ?.. my husband's cousin Morris Ashby, who lives in Gatesville, doesn't know and he knows a lot about the folks from there. But, maybe there is someone else, that can tell me.. I would like to know about the Downs family. Sarah Jane's father was Wm. A. Downs (haven't been able to connect him with the W. W. Downs, that married the Sparks) W. A.'s wife was Hannah Thomas, from GA, and I have a daughter-in-law, whose family was Thomas from this area also. The Chaney family and Daniel Oscar Jones family is hers also, from Coryell. Would love to do some work on her line. The Chaney grandfather married a Culpepper, from GA. The other family lines of my husband are: Jerry Morgan Melton who married Elizabeth Rogers, dau. of Washington Monroe. Rogers. Have some more on this line, if you're interested. Also, the Rev. Jesse Graham line. The Lam and Pennington lines in Coryell may be connected but, haven't proved it yet.. Contact me if you're interested in any of these... Sue Ashby >

    2. In response to your request for members with the surnames starting with M, my name is Bob Meeks (AKA Robert Earl Meeks) of the Leonard D. Meeks (Meeks Cafe) Family. I, along with my wife and cousins, Ranzell Meeks of Gatesville and James Moore of Webster, TX are researching the Meeks Family line that includes Halpain's and Wharton's. I have written a short book about the Meeks Family line that begins with James Meeks, ca 1700 thru and including my great grandson. Troy, 1995. It also includes some Coryell County History, some Grundy County, TN History, as well as my maternal grandparents Bakke Family and Norwegian history. My cousin's wife, Peggy Meeks, is a member of the Coryell County Historical Society and at her request I donated a copy for their library. I will be happy to share anything I have. You may contact me by e-mail, writing to me at 108 N. Crescent Dr., Electra, TX 76360, or calling (940)495-4195. Good hunting. Bob Meeks

    3. Carole, thanks for the kind words, we try. The quarterly is the basis for the home page, it is why the Genealogical Society was formed. Information about the Society is mentioned on the first page and then from the table you can find out about officers, members, books for sale, order blank and membership application. All members of the Coryell County Genealogical Society receive the Quarterly. 3. Sue, I don't know if you've spent any time with the 1880 census but this is what I find: Page 417B, #441-446 is: Murrell, Lum B. 22 Farmer TX LA MO Albert H. 17 brother " " " Josephine 19 sister " " " Orah C. 14 sister TX On the next page: 418A # 446-451 is: Burgess, James 21 Farmer TX TX TX Tennessee P. 21 wife TN TN TN I'll bet these are your people and it gives you a wealth of info. Don't worry about the spelling of Ima Ophelia, the census takers could neither spell or write well. This tells you where they and parents were born. Evidently James' first wife must have died, probably in childbirth. I don't find Spencers in close proximity, and in this case Ophelia is living with a 2 full brothers. This is a very good starting place. 2. Bobbie Ross
    3. Michael, Nearly everything on the website is taken from the book, with notations of this fact at the bottom of the pages. The main part of the book consists of family stories submitted by descendants. As such it is a wealth of info. Of course if your ancestors were here but left no one to place this info in there the only way they might be mentioned would be through marriage into another family that has an entry. I just cannot urge anyone enough to get one of these books. Nothing comes close to having so much county history. It tells of all of the previous officials of the county. It tells of all of the lost settlements, due to Ft. Hood, cemeteries, schools and post offices. In the family sketches some carry their families back many generations.I would say that even if your family was not mentioned that the book is worth the price just for the county information. This book was done about 10 years ago, and the Society had it reprinted 3 years ago due to popular demand. I look at it this way, if I made a trip to Gatesville to do research it would cost me more than that and I know that you would not gain that much information on one trip! It is for sale on the home page, along with an order blank. ---------- > From: Michael Allen <[email protected]> > To: Bobbie Ross <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: Beaty > Date: Sunday, September 20, 1998 10:54 PM > > Is this the book advertised on the Coryell website for about $65 ? I did some work a few years ago for a descendant from New Mexico, let us know exactly what you want, or even better place a query on the boards; Faye in the 1880 census there are no Snoddy families and a lot of Thompsons, need more to go on, a query would be a good idea, I answer most of them! Those of you who sent snail mail addresses I will see that they get to the lady who does the quarterly. How about letting us hear from those whose last names start with M, N, O, P, Q, R and S.
