Does anyone have access to a book titled "Early Days in Cooke County" written by C. N. Jones? I am interested in information on pg. 28 and 29 concerning the Berry and Wilson surnames. I want to know what Wilson family owned this ranch and where in Cooke County it was located. If possible would also like dates or something to distinguish which Berry this Tom is? I am searching for Louisa E. Wilson who m. James T. Berry in Cooke County, TX in 1862. They lived in the Callisburg area and a widow Clementine Wilson and children lived on the next farm. Any help on this would certainly be appreciated since I live out of state and have not been able to obtain the book. Thank you for your time. Peggy
Does anyone have any information on a JAMES G. WITHERSPOON and his wife HARRIETT that were in Cooke County, Texas in 1880, Hardeman County, Texas in 1900 and in Foard County, Texas about 1920 ? I need information on them and also on their niece BENNIE HOWELL that was living with them in 1880. She is listed as BENNIE HOWEFF on the 1880 LDS Census. She is listed as a 5 year old male. In 1900, she is still living in the household of James G. Witherspoon and she is 26 years old. I need any information on Bennie. She was the daughter of Benjamin Howell and Sarah (Sallie) Q. Witherspoon. They either lived in the Savannah, Hardin County, Tennessee area or the Waterloo, Lauderdale County, Alabama area before their deaths probably between 1874 and 1880. Thanks for any help. I am trying to find something on John Marion Robeson/Robinson with a possible list of his household. He was in Cooke County in 1880. Is there anything like that with the ag census? I think my g.grandmother was his daughter...went by Lizzie/Sallie/Sarah. She married William Moses Hunter in Cooke County in 1887. Trying to connect Lizzie as his Sarah on the 1880 census. Thank you Faye Heffington
Hi Faye, No, the ag census was at the Archives. In a month or so, I may get back. Who are you looking for? Alison
Hi, All -- I am searching for information on the family of WILLIAM GIBSON, born in England (date/place unknown) and WIFE. According to family lore, William was a courier or spy during the Civil War and died at some point during the conflict. His family in England were reportedly well-known cheese producers. I have practically no information on his wife; her name might possibly have been 'Harriet,' and according to census records she was born in Louisiana. Are there any descendants out there who have more information on these two, or their descendants? I'm really stuck! William's children were: William, b. 1846 in LA, d. 1902; buried North Hickory Cemetery, Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK S. H., [male] b. 1848 in LA, d. 1901; buried North Hickory Cemetery, Ada, Pontotoc Co., OK Charlotte, b. abt. 1850 in LA (possibly Shrevesport); died ~ 1902 in Allen, Pontotoc Co., OK (burial place unknown) Mary, b. abt. 1852 in LA; d. (Unknown) [and possibly others] Additional Info: I am the great-granddaughter of Charlotte GIBSON FERGUSON. Charlotte married Allen Brant FERGUSON abt. 1880 in Cooke Co. (probably Gainesville), Texas. Allen B. was b. 1844 in Marion Co., Tennessee. Allen already had 2 daughters by a previous marriage to Martha Helen Beauchamp: Helen Carolina ("Carrie") Ferguson, born abt. 1877 Mary Alice ("Allie") Ferguson, born 27 October 1878 Charlotte and Allen B. had 4 children: ADDIE LEE ("Ad") b. 1881 in/near Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX; d. 1962 in Yuma, AZ WILLIAM Ira ("Bill") b. 1884 in/near Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX; d. 1964 in Cortez, Montezuma Co., CO DELIA ANN ("Dee") b. ~ 1886 in/near Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX; d. (date/place unknown) FANNIE, b. Dec. 15, 1889 in/near Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX; d. 27 June 1971 in Los Angeles, CA (Fannie was my grandmother.) If anyone has any info on DELIA ANN ("Dee") that would be great, too. The family lost track of her after about 1930. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Is this ag census on a web site for Cooke County? I have ancestors in Cooke County that could have been on this. I would be interested in checking it out. Thank you, Faye Heffington Littlefield, Texas
Frank Porter and family are on the 1880 Cooke County, Texas agricultural census, with Frank Porter clearly listed as owning his land. This surprised me, because I've never found any land deed in Cooke County that refers to Frank Porter, Benjamin Franklin Porter, or B. F. Porter, and had always assumed Frank was sharecropping. Does anyone have any suggestions where I should go from here? Maybe to tax lists? Or where? Frank Porter and family were over the Red River into Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation, IT by the middle 1880s. Frank remained near Orr and Ringling for the rest of his life. (This is the same Frank Porter who shows up on the LDS 1880 regular transcription as Frank Carter-- all hail the transcriber, the census taker's handwriting was not really clear on the regular census.) Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the archived messages of this list or any other Rootsweb mailing list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is, when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents when they send their unhappiness to the entire list. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Jim Skaggs, I found the Skaggs in Turner Cemetery listed. However, I did not find a James M. Skaggs or James Manon Skaggs. The only other Skaggs that I found in the cemetery books was: Fairview Cemetery, section R Alvan A. Skaggs, 1/27/1927 - 6/14/1972 husband of Mary Mary W. Skaggs, 2/27/1935 - no dates Lela N. Skaggs, 1/24/1922 - 11/24/1979 Velma Lee Skaggs, 11/11/1911 - 11/9/1970 Do you know what time frame your James Manon Skaggs might have died in> If he died after records were starting to be kept (1903), I'll be happy to check the courthouse for a death record, or the Texas Death Index. And, yes, I am familiar with Turner Cemetery. Blessings, Dorie > >Hi Dorie, > >I would really appreciate it if you could check on James Manon Skaggs of any >other Skaggs that might be listed. I know that gggrandfather, Jeremiah Jones, and his wife Alcey Morris Jones are buried there; also a brother and a sister. We were there a couple of years ago. The cemetery is in the northern part of the county and not far from Dexter. It's on private property and was overgrown with grass and brush. I would be interested in hearing from anyone that's connected to this family or knows anything about the cemetery. Jim Hodges Richmond, VA

Jim, While you are at the library, could you check the cemetery book for me? I just have one name. H. W. "Bud" White. He would have died in the 1890's, so it's probably a long shot. Thanks, Bev
