Dear List Members, If you were effected by the Comcast buy out, then you need to read this, if not delete it. Just this evening, I have receive over 100 requests for me to change e-mail address to a Comcast address. Many of these requests mention multiple lists of which the sender needs their e-mail address changed. It will take me a good week or so to get through them all. My suggestion is; If you still have the ability to unsubscribe go to PASSWORD Central at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ type in your old e-mail address, and follow the directions. You will receive an e-mail from which you can unsubscribe. If you can't do this, then you will just need to re-subscribe with your new address and let the old one bounce off. To re-subscribe this go to John Fuller's mailing list site http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html or remember you can subscribe and or unsubscribe by sending only the word UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE to XXXXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or XXXXXX-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM if you are on the Digest List. Naturally change the XXXXXX to the name of the list. If all else fails, contact me, but be understanding if it takes me a while to get to you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
For those of you who are visiting the cemeteries and graves of your loved ones, your ancestors this weekend and have a few extra flowers, think of placing them on one of the lonely graves which are never visited. Or, if you are living in an area where you have no one, think of visiting a cemetery and placing flowers by one of these lonely graves. I live in Logan Utah and tomorrow I will be visiting several local cemeteries and will be placing flowers on graves. Over the past years I have adopted these graves, these people and I hope that someone out there is doing the same for my loved ones. This is the day to remember those who came before us, who forged the paths that we now walk. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Hello list, Do any of you that live out there in Cooke Co., Tx. know of an old cemetery called Mt. Hope Cemetery? My g.g.grandmother and her new husband, James H. Calvert (her 1st husband, my g.g.grandfather was killed in the Civil War) and family moved out there in 1866, to Gainseville. She died in their home in 1874 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. Is that a cemetery of on its own accord or is it like one of those country church cemeteries? One day I would like to go out there and visit her grave. Looking for any descendants of the following PIERCE/PEARCE/PURCE/all variant spellings, families: Nathan P., Thomas M., William G., Washington, and John P. Pierce/Pearce. All 5 were living in Grayson Co from about 1849 on and had fairly large families, it's believed some of them moved into Cooke Co after 1850. Also searching for descendants of Samuel M. MCKAY and his wife, Malinda nee PIERCE/PEARCE, also living in Grayson Co from 1849 on. There is a probate record in Cooke Co for the estate of Samuel MCKAY, administrator Wesley PIERCE, that I believe might be the same Samue McKay who was married to Malinda. Any help at all is greatly appreciated! Jo Ann Pierce-Mothershead Family Ties http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jcat2/
Dear List Members, It is that time of year when some of you will be leaving on Vacations. Dear Listers: I am hoping that someone on this list will be able to do a look up for me. I have addressed this message to several Lists and I apologize if you receive more than one of this message. This is my story: My grandmother Ethel LAWES b. 1887 in Ontario, Canada travelled to Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois about 1910 and stayed with her sister until she found a job. She was hired by the Fred Harvey Restaurant system which operated out of the Santa Fe Railroad line. As the story goes Fred Harvery hired women to be waitresses to prepare and serve meals to people who were travelling westward from the 1880's to 1950's. She was required to sign a contract stating that she would work for Fred Harvey and that during her contract that she could not marry, could not become pregnant. At the end of their contract the Railroad would take them where they wanted to be dropped off. My Grandfather Herbert Scott BOYER (s) born in Freedom, Owen Co., Indiana in 1882 supposedly was also hired by either the Railroad or the Fred Harvey Restaurant System. He also had signed a contract. Now these two people met while employed by Fred Harvey System or Santa Fe Railroad. At the end of their contract these two people supposedly married about March to June 1912. They travelled to Douglas, Cochise Co., Arizona where my father was born May 11, 1913. I found the home in which they were living, I also found a page from the City Directory of Douglas, Arizona showing that Herbert S. Boyer and Ethel Lawes Boyer (s) were living on 820 13th Street in Douglas. They also had an insurance policy on the home they were living in at the time. I also found out that Herbert was employed at the White House Cafe in Douglas, Arizona When my father was 10 months old my grandmother asked the local priest to take her to the train and make sure they got safely onto the train and left Douglas. She was taking my father and was going back to Inwood, Ontario, Canada where her family was living. She left my grandfather behind. He evidently wasn't a very good husband and father. He had extracurricular activites that were not conducive to a good marriage. My grandmother divorced him. Now Herbert returned home sometime later to his family in Freedom, Owen Co., Indiana where he lived the rest of his life. He married in 1931 to another woman and they had no children. He died in September 1960. My father died in October 1959 and my grandmother died in December 1962. I am looking for a marriage license for Herbert Scott Boyer (s) and Ethel Lawes. Herberts' birthdate was April 26, 1882 and my grandmothers' birth was May 16, 1887. Herberts' parents were William Scott Boyer(s) and Mary Elizabeth Perry. My grandmothers' parents were Henry Lawes and Emily Moore. According to one of Herbert's descendants Herbert never left home for more than two days in his whole life so he thinks I may have the wrong one but I have pictures of him and my grandmother together and my father listed Herbert as his father on his Social Security Application. I have not been able to find another Herbert Scott Boyer(s) born in that time frame anywhere. When I wrote Social Security I was given the information from my fathers application and this matches this Herbert Scott Boyer(s). If there is someone who could do a marriage lookup for me I would be most grateful as I have been looking for many years and I just came across the Santa Fe railroad map showing me where all of the train stations were between 1880 and 1950 and that is why I am writing this message in the hopes that I might be able to locate the marriage record. My grandmother also married a second time to a man from Dupage County, Illinois about 1916-1918 and I have not been able to locate that marriage record either. The second husbands name was William H. HAWBECKER. Thank you in advance for reading this long message and I hope someone is able to help me. Jean Payton jeanpayton@earthlink.net

If you have family members in Shiloh Cemetery near Dexter, TX, I'd like to hear from you. I'm a DELASHAW researcher, and we have about 5 family members in that cemetery, which is now pretty much a cow pasture. Several of us family members visited the cemetery (with permission) a few years back. We cleaned up somewhat, but didn't really make a dent. I did photograph all the stones I could find. My pictures are not good, but I did write down what is on the stones. With the help of a cemetery listing, I think I've identified the photos. Please write if you would like to see any of the following stones. I can scan the photos (such as they were, in the shade and bushes). 1. G. W. July 8, 1845-June 19, 1916)and M.E. Delashaw (July 7, 1854--no burial date, but obit says she was buried there) (my great-grandparents) 2. Grace Delashaw ( born and died in 1890) 3. Lexie L. Delashaw (born and died 1889) 4. W. W. I am not related to this line. However, I was at the courthouse today, and found the following marriage: Cooke County Marriage Book 9, page 305 Mr. W. C. Price married Mrs. M. A. McCarty on 2/14/1902. Marriage performed by Albert Theobold, Minister of God Hope this helps, Dorie
I am not related to either line. However, I was at the courthouse today and found the following: A. B. Ferguson married Charlotte Gibson on 9/22/1880. Marriage performed by L. D. Holesonbaker, Minister of God Found in Cooke County Marriage Book 3, 1877-1882, page 393. I looked for marriages on children of this couple and did not find anything. I also looked in births and deaths, but, again, did not find anything. Also, nothing found in wills and probates. Hope this helps some. Dorie

Hello, I was at the Cooke County Library today. I did check the book "Early Days in Cooke County" by C. N. Jones. Page 28 & 29: These pages are in the portion of the book that describes Indian activity in early Cooke County. On page 28 an early settleer still alive in 1935 when book was written describes an Indian raid in the Sadler Bend area of the Red River. He states that the men persuing the Indians met at the Wilson Ranch. No identifying information as to who the Wilson Ranch belonged to is listed. The bottom part of page 28 and through page 29 describes another Indian raid, known in Cooke County as the Menasco Massacre. The Menasco family farm was near the Rosston area (not near the Sadler Bend area...) Rosston is located southwest of Gainesville). The statement is that the Menasco farm was located near present village of Rosston and known now as the Tom Berry Place. No identifying information on Tom Berry is listed. I checked the book for any other mention of Wilson and Berry without success. I did find James Berry married to Louiza Wilson, 1/24/1862. This marriage is listed in "Cooke County Marriage Records, 1849-1879" by Frances T. Ingmire. So, there should be a marriage certificate on file at the Cooke County Clerk's Office. You can write the Cooke County Clerk at The Cooke County Courthouse, Gainesville, TX 76240. Photocopies of marriage records ar $1.00. A SASE is appreciated. In your letter to them ask them to check for an original license. They have many old licenses in files that were never picked up by the new husband and wife. And, they will happily send you the original license, if they have it if you describe relationship to the couple. I have a Berry line out of Washington County, VA that I am persuing. Rachel Berry, daughter of Frances Berry, married James Trimble. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Trimble, married Welcome Martin 3/20/1806 in Washington County, VA. This family later moved to Monroe County, KY. Wondered if we'd have a Berry connection? Blessings Dorie Peggy wrote: >Does anyone have access to a book titled "Early Days in Cooke County" written by C. N. Jones? If possible would also like dates or something to distinguish which Berry this Tom is? I am searching for Louisa E. Wilson who m. James T. Berry in Cooke County, TX in 1862. They lived in the Callisburg area and a widow Clementine Wilson and children lived on the next farm. Any help on this would certainly be appreciated since I live out of state and have not been able to obtain the book.
