Connecting families of interest: Witherspoon, Howell, Wesson, Chedester/Chidester, Montague Hello: I am not related to the Witherspoon family but my wife had a cousin , Bennie Howell (female) that I have done some research on and I have found that she was raised by the James G. Witherspoon family. Of interest to those who research the Witherspoon family's of Texas, I have found that one child (Minnie) of J.G. and H.C. Witherspoon is buried here in Lauderdale County, Alabama with the family of James H. and Jane Witherspoon. There are 2 different Minnie Witherspoon graves at the Richardson Cemetery in Waterloo, Alabama. This is how they are listed in "Some Lauderdale County, Alabama CEMETERY RECORDS by Jill K. Garrett and Iris H. McClain. WITHERSPOON Minnie, dau. of J.G. and H.C., 16 May 1872---- 18 Nov. 1875. Marked "Minnie's grave". Minnie, dau. of Rev. J.H. and Jane, 14 Feb. 1853----18 Sept. 1970. All of this Witherspoon families graves at the Richardson Cemetery are said to have been removed from the Witherspoon Cemetery nearby and placed in the Richardson Cemetery when land was flooded by T.V.A. I think this was in the early 1930's. WHAT I NEED Can anyone give me any information on Bennie Howell ? Bennie was the daughter of Benjamin Howell and Sarah Witherspoon. I think Sarah was the sister of Harriet (H.C.) listed above. When Sarah died and a little later Benjamin died, Bennie seems have been sent to Texas to live with Harriet and James G. and family. Oh yes, Harriet was a Witherspoon before she married a Witherspoon cousin, James G. With help from several others, I have traced Bennie Howell to marriage to a Frank Chedester. They don't seem to have had any children. They ran some type of business in the Britton area of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Frank died in 1939 and Bennie died in 1955. I found their graves in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma this past summer. They are buried in the Britton Cemetery, but not buried next to each other. One person sent me information that James G. Witherspoon died at the home of his niece Mrs. Frank Chedester. These fellow researchers have given me information that I never will be! able to repay. I would like information on these Witherspoon's and Bennie Howell Chedester and husband Frank. I am hopeing that maybe someone might have some photos or other things that they might share. It is my guess that Bennie never knew her HOWELL family as she was very small when she left Lauderdale County, Alabama and Hardin County, Tennessee. I believe that she was probably unknown to many of her cousins here. I plan to put my information on her in a family file at our library in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama. Thanks for any help anyone can send me. Steve Cooper Cloverdale, Alabama STEVECOOPER75@COMCAST.NET

Dear Listmembers, The old German newspaper "Ostfriesische Nachrichten" was published by Pastor L. Hündling [Huendling} in 1882 in Iowa as a connecting paper between the people in the new American settlements and the old homeland with news and events in Ostfriesland and the "New World". Later you could find this newspaper all over the U.S. and Ostfriesland. For the period between 1882 and 1915 the issues were microfilmed around 20 - 30 years ago. According to a descendant of Pastor Huendling about 10 years ago, most of the issues between 1916 and 1971 got lost on the way to a processing center to be microfilmed. Besides Rev. Kenneth DeWall and others, who published in the past some indexes of (only) obituaries, we started in 1997 reading each newspaper for 1882 - 1915 and 1916 - 1971 (single issues) from the front to the back and taking all of the personal data in obituaries and local news into computer files. We added also interesting stories about the events in the New World - especially for the German readers -. So far we have listed 10,300 names of deceased between 1882 and 1915 plus 12,300 names of relatives, and until 1971 only 2,000 deceased / 5,000 relatives. Now we are looking for issues of this newspaper between 1916 and 1971. The undersigned would appreciate your answer if you have access to those issues. We have the microfilms from Crest Information Technologies and Heritage Crest, both in Cedar Rapids, IA. Most of the single issues after 1916 are scattered all over the U.S. and Germany. We guess, maybe finding them in the attics, etc. of old East Frisian settlements in the States. Thank you very much in advance for your help in preserving the data. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year. I do know that the Chisolm Trail followed what later became Highway 81, so one can probably assume that was one trail they followed. It crossed the Red River just south of Terral, OK. There was probably a similar trail south of Love County. This site http://www.mckendricwhiskey.com/Longhorn_Creek/famoustrails.htm might give you better answers than I can. A distant relative just told me that my great grandfather, Robert H. "Bob" Cagle (wife Milvinia Rickman Cagle) died in Gainsville, Texas while in route to Childress County, TX in 1896. The family was traveling by train and he became ill, not sure if he died on train or was taken off. I was wondering if there are any ways to prove this....newspapers, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Alison-- My ancestors went from Cooke County to Love County in the 1890s. My great-grandparents were married at Horseshoe Ferry in Cooke County which crossed the Red River into Love County. They later moved to Love's Valley in Love County. On a trip to Gainesville many years ago, the clerk was kind enough to not only check for their marriage record in the book but she also told me she had hundreds of original marriage licenses that the bride/groom never picked up. Fortunately, my g-grandparents never picked theirs up so I have it in my possession. It is certainly a precious treasure. The clerk was also kind enough to check the original documents for my other relatives married during that time frame. I left the office that day with three original marriage licenses that belonged to my family members! I have often wondered why they didn't come back to pick up their marriage license. Hello all, I still wish I could find out where my great grandmother is buried (maiden name was Isabella Jane McDowell)! Her first husband was my g.g.grandfather John Warren White who was killed in 1864 in the Civil War. After migrating to Cooke County in 1866 with her new husband, James Henry Calvert, they settled in Gainesville. She died in their home there in 1874 and according to her son from that first marriage, my great grandfather, Rev. Wm. Henry White, she was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery. But there seems to be no trace of it. If anyone comes across it I would be most appreciative.
