Faye, The Gainesville newspaper was in existance in 1894. You might contact the library to see if they have his murber in their file. The Gainesville paper was not good about including obituaries. Listers, If you ordered a copy of the City of Denton Birth Records: 1900-1949, from the Denton County Genealogical Society, they have arrived from the printer. They should be in the mail in the next few days. Diana White

Hello Connie, How are you doing these days? It is good to hear from you and always good to hear from a distant relative. Anyway, in his letters and papers when he descibed moving west in 1866, my great grandfather, Rev. Wm. Henry White, wrote (he was around 11 when they went west) that, ".....along with some relatives and friends....", they migrated to Texas. So I am sure that some relatives, whom I am not sure, went with them. In my White line there were those that migrated around too, and some that married Wests, Blacks, Barnetts, and Wyatts as well I think. But now there was one bunch of the Wyatts, all siblings and children of my g.g.grandmother's sister Adeline McDowell Wyatt that did not go until 1873. Below is an excerpt from my McDowell file, the first two generations after they came to South Carolina from Ireland. You will see how some migrated west at different times, etc.. I might have sent you this before Connie, but let me know what you think: ---------------------------------- I. JOHN MCDOWELL, SR. was born 12 August 1759 in Glenmellion, Co. White wrote that the ship that the Mcdowells came over on was named "Margaret", and landed at Charleston, South Carolina in 1793 or 1794 (my Great-Grandfather, Rev. Wm. Henry White, said it was in 1796). John McDowell served as an elder in Fairforest Presbyterian Church in the Spartanburg, S.C. area. Session 14 July 1842 adopted a resolution about him, Mathew Mayes and Samuel Morrow. The McDowells settled in Union County, South Carolina near the present David Henry McDowell house. David, perhaps Isabella and her husband came to Texas with the Wyatt and Ware families, Isabella's sister Adeline Amanda McDowell was married to Thomas Wesley Wyatt and their daughter Susan Ann Wyatt married John Fletcher Ware. John and Susan's first child was born in SC and the second child, my grandmother, Elizabeth Amanda Ware was also born in Upshur County in 1872, their next child was born in Cooke County. Looks like they may have made the trip to Texas together. The other sister Rachel Catherine McDowell was married Thomas Templeton Black, he had to come to Cherokee County and bought land, but died before he was able get his family moved here, Rachel came after 1874 to Cherokee County, living there many years before moving on to Johnson County, then later Tarrant County, where she died. I remember in one of the Cooke County quarterlies, they had a list of cemeteries that were moved to a new location because of a lake that was being built, maybe this is what happened to this cemetery. Even if this did happen, there should be some kind of record that shows this cemetery was moved and where it was relocated. Oh, BTW, Mr. Calvert married again [1875] and had least three more children [James J., Elizabeth, and Belle] by his second wife, Sidney Nellie Hooper. In 1900 he and Sidney were living in Hale County, Texas. Hello again, I am sorry. I did forget to change the subject line and include her name. Also, she is buried in Mount Hope Church graveyard, not New Hope church. Sorry about the mistakes. Her full maiden name was Isabella Jane McDowell (Her Scots-Irish grandparents came over from Ireland to S.C. in the mid 1790s). Her first husband, my gr.gr. grandfather, was John Warren White. He dying in the Civil War, she remarried in 1866 a Mr. James Henry Calvert, and in that same year they and some family and friends migrated to Texas. She had several children by John White and I think four more in Texas by Mr. Calvert. I suppose their descendents are still out there somewhere. Like I was saying, she died in their home in Gainesville in 1874 and was buried in the New Hope Church cemetery. I would just like to know if her grave still exists. Here is all I know of her children by her 2nd husband (a small excerpt from my White file): ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2nd Husband of Isabell Jane McDowell: James Henry Calvert issue: From letter dated 1939 from mary Gentry Knight: 1. James Jasper Calvert, b. in 1872 in Upshur Co., Texas. 2. Isabella Jane McDowell Calvert, b. 1874 in Cooke Co., Tex. 3. Nannie Calvert, Plainview, Texas (dates unknown). 4. Daughter (name and dates unknown) ------------------------------------------------------------------ I would also like to say hello to Mr. Calvert's children's descendents if they are out there. They are my kin too. Their mom, Isabella Jane was a McDowell and my gr. gr. grandmother. I have my McDowells back to when they came to S.C. from Ireland. Perhaps they might be interested in their McDowell line. Hello all, I wish someone that lived there in Cooke Co., Texas could check the New Hope Church cemetery and see if there is a marker for my g.g.grandmother. She was from Spartanburg, S.C., and her husband, my g.g.grandfather, being killed in the Civil War, she remarried a Calvert and migrated to Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas. She died in 1874 and was buried in New Hope Church cemetery. I would just like to know where her grave is in case I can make it out there one day (I live in Alabama). Was wondering if there are any old church membership records available in Cooke County especially around Dexter. My g.g.grandparents John and Ellen Robeson/Robinson lived in that county and are on the 1880 census there. Most of their children married in Cooke County. Three of the girls had a William M. Boyd, MG perform their marriage ceremonies in 1887, 1890, 1895...appears to be Methodist. Any help would be appreciated. Faye Heffington Littlefield, Texas
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Mt. Hope Church in or near Gainesville, Texas? My gr.gr. grandmother was Isabella Jane McDowell, who was born 6/21/1830, in Spartanburg, S.C. and died 4/13/1874 in the home of her then present (2nd) husband at that time, whom she had married in 1866 and then gone to Texas with, Mr. James Henry Calvert, who also fought in the War For Southern Independence in Holcombe's Legion, S.C. Vols., C.S.A.. She originally had married John Warren White, my g.g.grandfather, but he being killed in 1864 in the War, she remarried the afore mentioned James Henry Calvert in 1866 and they migrated to Gainsville, Texas in Cooke Co. that same year. Her son, my great grandfather, Rev. Wm. Henry White, wrote that she is buried in the graveyard at Mount Hope Church there in or near Gainsville. She was the daughter of Henry and Dorcas Foster McDowell there in Spartanburg, S.C.. Anyway, I wonder if Mt. Hope church is still there or if its graveyard is still there and what sort of shape they are in? I live in Alabama and will probably never be able to make it out to Cooke Co., Texas but I am just curious about her last resting place. I wonder when was the last time anyone visited her grave. She had some more kids by Mr. Calvert while out yonder. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, David Edelen Millbrook, Al.

Stop the search, my mystery has finally been solved after all the waisted years of searching the 1870 census. Connie on the TXCOOKE email list found him without much effort! :) George S. Lock is living right next door to his parents George F. Lock in the 1870 Crawford County Arkansas census, but the kicker is the census taker listed him as George Simon, um? he forgot to add that he was a LOCK ! lol. I have looked at that record a ton of times and missed it every time, Connie saw it and let me know. THANKS Connie! But now this new info raises new questions for me, we always knew him as George Sims Lock, the census listed him as George Simon, makes me wonder if we had his middle name wrong all this time too ;) No known record to prove either middle name is correct that I am aware of. Thanks everyone who may have started looking for me , but he has been found by Connie. Donald Locke
Doesn't that just slay you? I have a family that was missing in Alabama in 1850. One day, as I looked for the family's father-in-law, I saw the family. Next door to the father-in-law, but listed as Cook instead of Coon! Congratulations on finding George Sims / Simon Locke. Alison Stevens Porter,. Gray, and who knows who else in Cooke Co., TX between 1870ish and 1899ish
