    3. Posted on: Colorado County, TX Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Tx/Colorado/547 Surname: Shatto, Slack ------------------------- I believe you are correct. The name is Mrs. P.K. Shatto. When we received copies of my gg grandfather's civil war papers from the National Archives, the papers were in an old envelope with Mrs. P. K. Shatto's name written on it. Further, when a cousin talked with DAR members, we found that Mrs. P.K. Shatto was a DAR member with our family name Slack. We are trying to figure out how the Shatto's fit into the Slack family line. Specifically, my ggg grandfather, Thomas Slack, moved with his wife, Julia Holland Slack, to Fayette County, near Holman, about 1840. They had children: Sowell Slack, Susannah Slack, Cynthia Slack, George Jefferson Slack, Thomas Slack, Jr., and Mary Ann Slack. Most of the family married, and stayed in the Fayette and Colorado county area...Susannah married Isaac Mullins, Cynthia married Balser Hefner (lived in Weimer), Mary Ann married George W. Walker, and later Rufus Fisher. Do you have any idea who Mrs. Shatto's family was...her maiden name...and how she is related to the Slack family? Many thanks.

I do not remember the man's name, but Grandpa Duddleston said that the man was working inside a water well. At the top of the well was a pump powered by a gasoline engine, and fuel from the fuel tank began leaking into the well. It ignited, killing the man. This could be another account of the death of Joe Marsalia in 1917.

    2. David Hahn
    3. Posted on: Colorado County, TX Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/ColoradoObits/59 Surname: Burford ------------------------- Maj. F. M. Burford was born in North Alabama, November 26th, 1823. Afterwards his father (Dr. J. Burford) moved to West Tennessee, where our brother was raised and educated. He was happily married to Miss C.A. Shaw of Hardeman county, Tennessee, October 25th 1849. In 1851 they came to Texas and settled in Colorado county. On the 1st day of January last he had an attack of cystitis, resulting in ulceration of the bladder, from which he never recovered. Every other remedy failing, as a lst resort, he was taken to Lampassas Springs, some four weeks befoe his death. As he still grew worse, an effort was made to get him home, but in vain. He died at Round Rock, at 2:30, A.M., August 8th, 1877. His remains were brought by rail to his late residence, Osage, Colorado county, Texas, where his funeral was preached at 10 A.M., August 11th, to a large and attentive audience; after which his body was buried with Masonic rites, to await the general resurrection of the last day. About thirteen years ago brother Burford professed religion and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, of which he remained an acceptable member (acting as steward most of the time) until his death. He was also a worthy Royal Arch Mason. Much might be said in praise of our deceased friend and brother, but his life is his best eulogy. As a citizen, he was true to his country; as a neighbor, affable and obliging; as a Mason, prompt and true to his obligations; as a Christian, modest and unpretending; as a husband and father, kind and affectionate. His loss will be felt by the community in which he has lived so long. He will be sadly missed by the church and his lodge--but most of all in the family circle, by his bereaved widow and orphan children. Their loss is truly irreprable; but his honest upright life, his patience and resignation in affliction, and his peaceful death, gives the assurance that he is at rest with God in the home of the blest. Colorado County Citizen, August 30, 1877

    1. [TXCOLORA-L] Jacob Hahn
    2. David Hahn
    3. Posted on: Colorado County, TX Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/ColoradoObits/58 Surname: Hahn ------------------------- At an early morn last Friday morning the gallant spirit of the old hero soldier Jacob Hahn passed to the Great Beyond where comes beautiful rest. Our friend and comrade in "the days that tried men's souls" in the camp, on parade, on the march and in the field where red-flamed war hurled his death-dealing missiles among us, who could but love a spirit whose gallantry defied death and laughed at all efforts to destroy him? "After life's fitful fever he sleeps well." The hardships and vicissitudes of his services in the war with Mexico and as a soldier of the Confederste States, of which he could speak by the hour of interesting reminiscences, are past and he sleeps, his bier flower-laden, on a summit "where green trees wave their summer glories and where bright sunbeams fall." Not a month ago he told us he was ready to go and took us into the room and pointed out the portrait of his wife whom he missed so much, and on the day he left us, in the same room, her lips seemed to say "he comes to meet me." There are few of his old comrades of Hood's brigade now left to speak a word or drop a tear to the memory of the chivalrous Jacob Hahn. Deceased was born in Germersheim, Rheimpfatz, Bavaria, September 7th 1821, immigrated to Texas in 1845, joined the Texas forces against Mexico in 1845, and at the conclusion of the war settled in Colorado county, where he has since resided; joined Co. "B" Fifth Texas Regiment, Hood's Brigade, July, 1861, wounded June 27, 1862, at Gaines Mill, incapacitating him for infantry, and he was honorably discharged same year. He was twice married, both wives preceding him to the grave. He was blessed with eight children, all of whom are alive to mourn his loss. At 4 o'clock last Friday afternoon his remains were committed to earth at the Odd Fellows Rest, Rev. T.E. Muse, pastor of the First Baptist Church in this city, officiating.

    1. [TXCOLORA-L] Spenn, Spinn 1870 Census Colorado Co. TX
    2. Hello, I'm new to the list. The 1870 census shows the following: Spinn, T. W., age 34, born TN, living in Colorado Co TX Spenn, Jac, age 29, born AL, " " " " " 1870 Census is the only one for Colorado Co. with these Spinn/Spenn names. I think the Speen should probably be Spinn. I am researching the Spinn surname in Austin and Washington Counties TX. Nothing is known of Spinn/Spenn in that time period anywhere else in TX. Also of interest, is the birth places for these Spinn/Spenn. Our immigrant ancestor Spinn came to Austin Co., directly from their homeland. I would like to correspond with any descendant of the above mentioned Spenn/Spinn from Bastrop Co., TX. Marie
