"One of the people said to be buried here is George Lovejoy..." He died around 1856 and was the son of John L. Lovejoy. This cemetery served McKinney before Pecan Grove Memorial Park was started in 1870. The book cites an old newspaper article by Capt. Roy Hall. He said the bones of those interred in this old cemetery were moved when the Trinity Presbyterian Church was built. Capt. Hall said there were never more then 30 graves in the cemetery. According to the book, there were no burials here after 1869 and the cemetery was never used by the Presbyterian church. Capt. Hall stated that the church building was erected in 1926 and that at that time no remaining tombstones were in the cemetery. However, during construction, bones were uncovered. One person said to have been buried here was Milton Wilkerson. He died in 1867, prior to the opening of Pecan Grove Cemetery, but according to COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS, Vol 1, he is now buried at Pecan Grove. No records have been found to show that any other people were transferred there. If you will e-mail me, I will be glad to send you the article containing this information. It includes directions to the exact location of the old cemetery and a picture of the church. Judy [email protected]
Many of the people buried in Pecan Grove Cemetery and listed in the cemetery books have been moved to Ridgeview, Central (75) and Ridgeview Drive just south of McKinney. When I am looking in Pecan Grove for a tombstone and don't find one, I check to see if the body had been disinterred and taken to Ridgeview. I just thought you ought to know this.
