    1. Re: [TXCOLL-N] Information
    2. I believe bwhiz@prodigy.net is accurate in making the statement below. May I add that only the "format" of the book is copyrighted. It is certainly a worthwhile book but the constant "reminder" following any mention of burials in the county has distressed me for some time. I hope this issue can be resolved amicably. As far as citing the book for your own research purposes, I certainly want to encourage you all to do that. Why don't you just email the person supplying the info to you and ask for the source of the info? Or, ask if it is from the county cemetery book. A good source citation is your "map guide" to finding that info at a later date. Do not take anything off the Internet without double checking it for accuracy. However if anyone on the list wishes to site the source from the book in question, it should be cited: Alice Pitts, Wanda O'Roark, and Doris Posey, compilers, Collin County (Texas) Cemetery Inscriptions, 2 volumes (Fort Worth: The Manney Company, 1975), page --. I took the information above from the cover page and verso of my copies of the book. The only one of the compilers alive today is Mrs. Doris Posey, 1415 E. Hwy. 380, McKinney, TX 75069. 972-542-7119. Doris Posey and Minnie Champ are the only people who sell copies of the book to my knowledge. As with any book sellers, the prices vary. I sincerely hope this issue can be put to rest without further ado and without countless messages appearing on the list. The effort of the compilers is certainly commendable and worthwhile. However, the tombstone info is public knowledge, not so concerning the format. Without the compilers' tremendous efforts and sacrifices this book would not be available to us today. Please continue to use the book for your personal info on the list, and use it with all the joy and enthusiasm of active family historians everywhere. This is all public record, and there isn't any copyright on public records. The information IS public, for it is our relatives who are buried there, it is information from their tombstones WE'VE bought, or whose information is in the hands of our public servants at the courthouse. Anyone who writes a book containing names and information from cemetaries or courthouses is listing public record. With that in mind, a copyright infringement does not occur when you are repeating information contained in any public record that was attained in writing the book.
