Mitzi K. Perkins, Thank you for your response. I would like to be able to contact the relatives of Dr. Mantooth as I had a number of Uncles in that area so I am more than likely related. It would be interesting to find out. I know there are about 10 Mantooths buried in Altoga,TX out side of my g grandfather and G Grandmother so I am certain that have offspring in that area. Maybe I can find some data on them. The Mantooth name I do not believe is Seminole, but instead is Cherokee and Creek. I am Cherokee in more or less a direct line from Cherokee Tom Mantooth which most all Mantooths go back to. I had heard the claim of the Seminole because of the actor Randy Mantooth who was said to be Seminole. I did a search on his back ground and could find no connection to the Seminole. If by chance you have Seminole data that is not in reference to Randy Mantooth I would very much appreciate that information. I may fill in some holes in my research. I have also been told that there is the Mantooth name in the Commence Indian tribe but again I can find nothing to support that. Once again thanks for the information I will certainly try to follow up on that about the Dr. Mantooth. Tom.

Tommie, What area are you in? Is there a large library near you? Is there a Latter Day Saints Family History Center near you where you could order censuses? If there is either of these, I think I'd try to research these before I made a trip to an area on a limited time basis. Maybe your daughter has access to these records. How long have you been doing genealogy research? If not long, you might get a book from the library on how to do genealogy research so that you know where to start and what records you need to look at when you get there. Just trying to help prevent some mistakes I've made. Hello Tom Mantooth. I saw your post about the Mantooth name and I have a little information that might interest you. I grew up in Melissa TX, about 5 miles north of McKinney and the Doctor in town was named J.T. Mantooth (1876-1953) He is buried in Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney, intersection of Hwy 121, Hwy 5 and Industrial/Eldorado Blvd. His home in Melissa is at the sorthwest corner of Hwy 5 and Main or Central St. I remember Dr. Mantooth from my early childhood and didn't enjoy it a bit when he sewed up my knee. Dr Mantooth's daughter, Johnnie (I think that was her given name) married George Madden and they had a son named John who attended Melissa and McKinney schools as I did. Did you know that the name Mantooth is a Seminole Indian name? Good luck in your search and contact me if you have questions. Mitzi Hammond Perkins Tom Mantooth wrote: > Minnie, > > I am Tommy J. Minnie, I am Tommy J. Mantooth and I have a lot of my family that should be listed in McKinney. In fact my Granddaughter is coming down next month and we plan to go to McKinney and do some searches. I know that my G Grandfather and G Grandmother are buried in Altoga, TX. They were John Mantooth and Elizabeth Martha Humbard Mantooth. How would be the best way for me to search for data on them? I have also been told that there are a book or two in the McKinney library that have authors name Mantooth. Do you know if this is true? Also are there census records available there? Thank You, Tom

To All Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this message is to inform all genealogists & researchers who subscribe to TEXAS Rootsweb Lists, of a very important web site that now has a searchable database of over 1,650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks, between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers had fought in the Indian Wars in Florida and also the War with Mexican, and then the Civil War. It is without doubt that some of the descendants of these men are most likely in every county of the great state of Texas. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT: The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead, of Virginia, and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, as being under his command and/or responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by 'quantity.' (ie. 426 males 20-30 yrs, or 34 females 20-30 yrs) HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has turned most of the 'quantities' into actual names. The list of these officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see the Barracks Notebook section) are available, free of any charge. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," for those who served at this federal military post on the Niagara Frontier. Also available is a wealth of rare and interesting information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com

Collin County Marriage Records begin in 1846 when it became a county. The indexes and records are in the Harrington Library and the Genealogy Friends will be happy to look these up for you for a small donation of $5. Birth and death indexes began in 1903 and are on film at the library from that time and go until about 1976. Film indexes stops that year. Records and indexes after that time are at the Dept. of Health in Austin. Vital Statistics began in Texas loosely about 1900 but are not consistent until about 1910. The Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc., will do an index search for a nominal donation fee of about $5. They use this money to buy more microfilm for the library. They are 501 c 3 tax exempt. They will be happy to do a search of any available indexes, but do not take the responsibility of compiled genealogies. Good luck.
