Hello Everyone We have added 22 new 1600's ancestors and included their children on the Ancestor Roll of Honor on America's First Families web site at; http://www.linkline.com/personal/xymox/ When you enter the site, scroll down to near the bottom of the page where the Ancestor Roll of Honor is located. On the same page you will also find a link to the 1600's Ancestor Data Base that contains over 14,000 names of proven ancestors from that era.

The WOW probably stands for Woodman Of the World, which is and insurance company. There are groups called camps still in many parts of the country. they have club houses and have WOW sponsored activities such as dances, picnics etc. Camp 274 may still exist in Farmersville. Bill Baker

Mitzi, Thanks you so very much for the great information. I would appreciate any information about the Seminole connection. You may have open a new path for me to search down. I have just received information from a Charlotte Sasek that you may know. SHe found information about the Mantooth name on both the Dawes and Miller Roll. She also found an application by my g grandmother Elizabeth Martha Humbard. She was turned down for some reason but a 1st cousin was placed on the roll. She also found some listed for Collett which was my mothers maiden name and also some Swoffords which was my grandmothers maiden name. She also found some names that were enrolled through a Thomas Mantooth who I believe from research was my gg grandfather who was reported to be full blood. Over all I feel this proves what I wanted to know, I am a Cherokee, from many different directions. I may never be able to become a member of the tribe but in my heart I know. I have always knew that I think. I have also been told that my grandmother Mary Katherine Spray Collett was a Choctaw from OK. I have not been able to prove that as yet. I have also been told that there is some Comanche in there also. Maybe one day I will find out that I am Cherokee/Choctaw/Seminole/Comanche. I would love that. Thanks again and I would love to hear about anything else you might come across. I have only been at this genealogy searching for about 5 months and if nothing else I have met a lot of very good friends and relatives. I have me one relative Brian Corntassel that has a number of Mantooth names in his ancestry and he is for certain a Cherokee and I believe a member of the East Cherokee tribe. I know he has set up a walk in Atlanta, GA. this next month in honor of the Cherokees on the trail of tears and also the Eastern band. Thanks again, Tom
Hi Tom. My ancestry is Lumbee/Cherokee/Choctaw and I know how difficult Native American research can be. My reference to the Mantooth-Seminole comes from the fact that the Cherokee (and to a large extent the Seminole) were very open to adopting other tribal and racial members as their own--even the slaves were more adoptees than the example seen in white culture. There is a great blending of the Cherokee and Seminole especially after the Removal Act of 1830 and again after 1834; my own ancestors left NC and family lore says that they escaped into the Great Dismal Swamp where they avoided much of the ravages of white contact. Some members of other tribes, which were not in 'good-standing' with the goevrnment, claimed Cherokee blood in order to receive benefits the Cherokee were given for being 'good Indians'. While I have not had a genealogical interest in the Mantooth name, its rarity and having known a family by the name, I tended to notice when I ran across it in my own searches. It just seemed to show up more in the areas of Seminole research than others--southern GA, FL, etc. I'll check back in my notes and see if I still have the references. I also have the Final Dawes and Chillocco School records and I'll check there. Mitzi
Minnie: I just had my bank send payment to start my membership in NCCGS. Thought I would join. I am going to the library tommorrow and am taking CCVolII to show Marjorie Bays. Also, taking one of the brochure's, for your books. She had asked me to bring a brochure, so that the library could purchase a copy of CC Vol II. Oh...and guess what?!?! I signed up for a workshop (Mesquite Genealogy Society is offering in April) and guess who is the speaker??? Paula Parke. She is giving a day workshop on Genealogy and the Internet. I am taking it so that I can meet her. I would like to ask her why she doesn't update the Collin County site on RootsWeb, and why she will not answer her email...but I won't. I promise to be nice! Take care... Tom, There is a LDS Family History Center in McKinney that has only been open for about a year. The address is 6800 Anderson Dr. and the phone number is 370-3537. Margie Frisco, Tx
Elaine, I am from the Garland, TX area. It Is. only about 20 miles from here to McKinney. I know about the LDS centers in Richardson and Plano. I also plan to check the libraries in Garland and Plano for the census, as I was told that is the best bet as the LDS centers have to order the census for a fee and the library is free. I have only been in Genealogy research for about 5 months and have really enjoyed it. Even if I never find everything I am looking for I have sure met a lot of very nice people, like yourself, that are always ready to help in anyway they can. I have made some very good friends that I feel certain will go far beyond the genealogy. I have also found a few relative that I did not know I had. I have only purchased on book on genealogy thus far and it is for genealogy online as thus far all my research has been on the internet. I am in the process of checking out other genealogy book to determine what would be a good one or two to have. I have the Family Tree Maker software to keep my records, but I have also considered trying to find paper charts to use as the software can only do a single page at a time. Once again thanks very much for your thoughtful and I will certainly heed it. Thanks, Tom
